The Hanseatic and University city of Greifswald is the main administrative centre for the Western Pomerania-Greifswald district. It is the economic, scientific and cultural centre of Western Pomerania.

Inhabitants

Greifswald is the youngest town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with an inhabitants’ average age of 42.7 years. Every fourth resident is between 18 to 30 years old.

The young image of the town is characterized by approx. 12,000 students, who study at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University.

Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University

Founded in 1456, it is one of the oldest universities of Europe.The university of Greifswald is the largest employer of the town with more than 6,000 employees. 4,500 persons alone are emplo-yed in the medical sector and health sciences.

On a growth path

Contrary to the general trend in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania population, which is due to the positive net migration for several years growing.In 2013, over 540 babies were born in Greifswald.55 percent of all children under 3 years are cared for in day care centres. The federal average percentage is 29.3.
