The Tugela Ferry Mall will consist of 55 brand new shops. With investment from Copper Zone (Pty) Ltd and the retail leasing know-how of Retail Net- work Services (RNS) the mall will officially open on Thursday, 25 April. The actual sod turning ceremony took place on 5 December 2012. Based on the outskirts of bustling Tugela Ferry, the mall covers 14 723m² with 300 parking bays for private vehicles as well as a 20 slot taxi rank with its own facilities. It is estimated that there will be in the region of 300 employment opportunities - Msinga Municipality and the Mthembu Traditional Council are backing this positive development by collecting CVs from potential local employees. As of this week, there were only a few vacant stores which national RNS Leasing Specialist, Jonathan Tagg said would be taken soon, bearing in mind that the original size had to be expanded to over 14 000m² to cope with the demand. The anchor tenant is Shoprite Checkers with Cashbuild, Pepkor Group and Edcon in the larger stores - these include Jet, PEP, Ackermans and PEP Cell. Included in the balance of tenants are Standard Bank, Capit- ec, Liquor City, Power Fashion Factory, OK Furniture, Barnetts, Rage and Shoe Zone. A number of well-known national fast food outlets will open with an outdoor eating court and KFC as a drive through. The mall is enclosed and to cope with the hot summer weather, has air conditioning throughout. Tagg said that aside from providing much needed shopping, banking and services to the community, Tugela Ferry Mall is also strengthening the towns central role in the area. WELCOME late rains over the past week are not nearly enough yet to ease the critically low level of Lake Merthley, and it is essential that Greytonians support the water re- strictions imposed by Umzinyathi to cut consumption by 50%. Although over 120mm rainfall has been recorded around the lake since last Tuesday, a lot more is re- quired as well as time for the un- derground springs and streams feeding the Lake to do so. According to the Department of Water and Sanitation rule of drought - when a water supply drops to 90%, restrictions should be introduced to prevent long term failure. But the Lake has been at 40% since last year and neither Umzinyathi, the water service provider, or Um- voti Municipality, which repre- sents Greytown and district, took any action until the Greytown Ga- zette headlined the situation last month. According to Umzinyathi water spokesman Pradeep Ramlall, through two public meetings held last week, and the general pamphlet “How to reduce water loss” handed out to schools and the public, it has complied with the requirements to inform consum- ers. At last Wednesday’s public meeting, there would have been a lot more consumers present had Umzinyathi kept to the time of 4pm set and advertised by it, but only the brave and committed waited until 5.30pm when the meeting ac- tually started. No real answer was given by Mr Ramlall to the queries from the floor as to why both mu- nicipalities, which had been alert- ed several months ago, had done nothing until supply hit crisis level. Computer empowermentWITH the emphasis on saving wa-ter, consumers are reminded ofthe Eskom agenda to save power!

Some suggestions:* Turn off your air conditioner

before you leave home for an ex-tended period of time. Or at leastturn up the thermostat. It's astraightforward way to use lesspower. Also, make sure the filteris clean.Dirty filters causeair con-ditioning units to work harder, us-ing more energy.

* Keep the refrigerator doorsclosed whenever possible. Also, avoid placing hot items in thefridge - let them cool to room tem-perature first.

*Heatupthefood, not thehouse.A microwave is much more effi-cient (and quicker) at heatingthings up than an oven, especiallyif you’re trying to stay coolwith airconditioning.

* It's curtains for you. Curtains, blinds and shades keep the sun'shot rays out of your house. Keepthem closed on sunny days duringthe summer season. Also, decidu-ous trees planted near your housewill addshadeandproduceasimi-lar effect - with the added bonusthat, whenthe treesheds its leavesinautumn, the sunlightwill returnjust in time for the colder months.

*Solarpoweryour laundry. Skipthe dryer and go for an old-fash-ioned clothes line. You can't beatfree energy from the sun - justmake sure there is no rain in theforecast.

Don’t onlysave water,but energy too

ESKOM has warned that there isa possibility that the power outa-ges might affect timer settings onelectric element geysers, poolpumpsandotherhouseholdappli-ance fitted with such a device.

When power has been restored, check all timers to ensure that theappliances are still set correctly.

Do not switch on at times duringthe day or night when they shouldremain switched off, such as be-tween 5pm and 9pm weekdays, the period of peak demand forelectricity in theresidential sector.

Every time the temperature inthe geyser drops 2°C to 3°C, thethermostat switches the elementback on and heats the water up to60°C - a timer drastically reducesthe number of times your geyserswitches on and off during a 24-hour period.

In the case of pool pumps, thegeneral rule is that swimmingpoolwater should be filtered twice ev-ery 24 hourswhen the pool is usedfrequently in summer. Researchhas shown that four to six hoursper filtering cycle is sufficient.

Electric element geysers andpoolpumpsare the twoappliancesthat use the most electricity inhomes across SouthAfrica -main-taining correct timer settings willmake a huge contribution to low-ering demand pressure on the na-tional power grid.
