of John and Mary Seward. The early years of his life were spent mostly in Morris

County, New Jersey. About 1800 he settled in the Town of Florida, Orange County,

New York, where he set up a medical practice, and established a mercantile business. In

1795 he married Mary Jennings of Goshen, New York, and they had five children. One

York State (1839-1842), a United States senator (1849-1861), and Secretary of State in

the administrations of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson (1861-1869).

Samuel S. Seward also was active in politics and government. In 1804 he served as a

member of the New York State Assembly. In 1815 he became a judge of the Orange

County Court and subsequently served as First Judge of the Orange County Court, a

position he held for seventeen years.

Records indicate Seward amassed a substantial fortune by the 1840s, some of which

was devoted to philanthropic endeavors. In 1846 he established the S.S. Seward

Institute, a free (public) school in Florida, New York. He created a $20,000 endowment

for the institute and provided for the purchase of land and the erection of the school

building. He died August 24, 1849.1

Louisa Cornelia Canfield (Seward) (October 4, 1805-January 4, 1839) Daughter of

Samuel Sweezey Seward and Mary Jennings, married Mahlon Dickerson Canfield and

had four children: Augustus Canfield, Francis Allyn Canfield, Caroline Cornelia

Canfield and Mary Seward Canfield.

William Henry Seward (May 16, 1801 – October 10, 1872). He was the son of Samuel

Sweezy Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in

1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn,

New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office. He married Frances

Adeline Miller, the daughter of Judge Miller in 1824. Seward was interested in politics

early in his career and became actively involved in the Anti-Masonic movement after

1828. With the backing of Thurlow Weed, the Whig newspaper editor, he was elected to

the New York State Senate in 1830 where he served for four years. He was nominated

by the Whigs for governor in 1834, but was defeated by William L. Marcy. From 1834

to 1838 he practiced law and served as an agent for the Holland Land Company, settling

settlers' claims in Chautauqua County.

In 1838 Seward was elected governor of New York State and again in 1840. He favored

internal improvements, public support of Catholic schools, and began to favor free soil

and abolition positions. From 1842 to 1848 he again practiced law, first in the court of

chancery and later in patent cases. He also defended cases involving fugitive slave laws.

In 1849 Seward was elected to the United States Senate, and increasingly built a

reputation as an anti-slavery senator. After 1855, the Whig party merged into the

Republican party, and Seward became one of the leading Republicans. He was passed

over as the presidential nominee in 1856 and, though he was the front runner in 1860,

Lincoln was given the nomination. After Lincoln's election, Seward was appointed to

the post of Secretary of State, a position he held until 1869 serving under both

presidents Lincoln and Johnson.

As Secretary of State Seward was a central force in the administration. The major issues

he dealt with during the Civil War years were the possibility of European intervention,

the outfitting of Confederate cruisers in British ports, the Trent affair and the French

invasion of Mexico. Seward was also interested in territorial expansion, and in 1867

negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

Seward was seriously wounded in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy, and after 1865

his health was not good. He retired from public life upon Grant's election, and despite

his poor health, took a trip around the world in 1871. William Henry Seward died in

Auburn on October 10, 1872.2

George MacCollough Grier (September 27, 1802-December 20, 1878). Married to

Frances Tuthill. He was a trustee of the Seward Institute in Florida, based in Goshen.

Mary Elisabeth Grier (1839-1930) her married name is Peterson and lived in Goshen.

Frances Elisabeth Grier (Tuthill) (January 16, 1804-February 7, 1860) wife of

George M. Grier, cousin of William Henry Seward.

Frances Adeline Miller Seward (1805 – June 21, 1865) was born in 1805, the

daughter of Judge Elijah Miller and Hannah Foote Miller. She studied at the Troy

Female Seminary (now known as Emma Willard School). She married New York

attorney William Henry Seward on October 20, 1824, after meeting him through his

sister, a classmate, in 1821. In his lifetime, William served as a senator in the New York

legislature, Governor of New York, a senator from New York and United States

Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

The couple raised five children: Augustus Henry Seward (1826-1876), Frederick

William Seward (1830-1915), Cornelia Seward (1835-1836), William Henry Seward,

Jr. (1839-1920) and Frances Adeline "Fanny" Seward (1844-1866). Some years after his

wife's death, in 1870, William formally adopted his companion Olive Risley Seward

(1841-1908).

On April 14, 1865, her husband and two of their sons, Frederick and Augustus, and

Fanny, were injured in an assassination attempt on her husband in their house.[1] The

man responsible for this ordeal was Lewis Powell a.k.a. Lewis Paine, a conspirator of

John Wilkes Booth; Booth had shot and killed President Lincoln the same night. The

attack put Frances into a state of great anxiety about her family. She thought that

Frederick would die of his injuries, although he survived. She died on June 21, 1865, of

a heart attack.3

William Henry Seward Jr. (June 18, 1839-April 29, 1920) was educated at home. He

became interested in finance and, in partnership with Clinton McDougall, opened a

private bank in Auburn in 1861. He abandoned banking in order to fight in the Civil

War, where he eventually rose to the rank of brigadier-general. After the war, he

returned to banking and lived with his wife, Janet MacNeil (Watson) Seward, in the

family homestead in Auburn.4

Julia Caroline Seward (February 11, 1824 – 1895) Second wife of George

Washington Seward (August 18, 1852), mother of Charles Humphrey Seward

(September 21, 1850-October 22, 1877); Julia Humphrey Seward (June 27, 1857) and

Mary Jennings Seward (June 27, 1857)

Clarence Armstrong Seward (October 7, 1828 – July 24, 1897) Clarence Armstrong

Seward was born in New York in October of 1828. But at seven-years-old, Clarence

lost both his parents, so his uncle William H. Seward took him under wing. William

would later serve as the Secretary of State under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.

After graduating from Hobart College in 1848, Clarence studied law at Auburn. By

1854 he moved to New York City and became a partner at Blatchford, Seward,

Griswold & Da Costa, which grew to be one of the most prominent law firms in the

city. Specializing in patent law and the law of common carriers, Seward primarily

represented railroad and industrial interests, but he also served as Judge Advocate

General to New York from 1856 to 1860.

Concurrent with President Lincoln’s assassination in April of 1865, was an attack on

William H. Seward. Although he would survive the assault, his injuries prevented

William from returning to his post. So for the first part of President Johnson’s term,

Clarence was called upon to fill the position as Assistant Secretary of State. Clarence

quickly proved his ability and earned a notable reputation.

Later in life, Clarence A. Seward also served as a delegate to the National Republic

Convention and as a Presidential Elector. But throughout his life and extensive career,

Clarence’s greatest passion was literature. He often drew from his favorite authors—

Chaucer, Shakespeare, Spencer, or Milton—in conversation and in his own writings.

There was no limit to the subjects Clarence could address, having extended his studies

from the arts, music and literature to science, astronomy, history, politics and

economics. His broad understanding on every topic nurtured his character and personal

charm, so that there was no individual with whom he could not find a common thread.

Clarence Armstrong Seward died on July 24, 1897 from heart failure in Geneva, NY.

He lived a full life, gave generously, and dedicated himself to his work. 5

George Washington Seward (August 26, 1808 – December 7, 1888) Son of Samuel

Sweezey Seward and Mary Jennigs. His first wife was Temperance Wicks Leddel

(April 17, 1832) whit who he had five children: Sarah Cornelia Seward (1833-);

William Henry Seward (1836-); Samuel Swazey Seward (1838-1916); Christiana F

Kimber (-1906) and George Frederick Seward. He married again with Julia Caroline in

August 18, 1852 with who he had seven children: John Laddell Seward, Charles

Humphrey Seward (1850-1877), Julia Humphrey Seward (1857-), William James

McKittrick, Mary Jennings Seward (1857-), George W Shields and Mary Jennings

Frederick William Seward (July 8, 1830 – April 25, 1915) Assistant Secretary of

State. An 1849 graduate of Union College. From 1849-1857 he served as secretary to

his father, William H. Seward. From 1851-1861 he also held the position of associate

editor of the Albany "Evening Journal". When his father was appointed U.S. Secretary

of State under Lincoln, the younger Seward was appointed Assistant Secretary of State.

On the night of April 14, 1865 he was slashed and his skull fractured protecting his

father during the assassination attempt by Lewis Powell. Seward survived his injuries

and again served as Assistant Secretary of State 1877-79 during the Hayes

administration. He had also served in the New York State Assembly being elected in

1874.6

Anna M. Seward (1836 – May 2, 1919) Wife of Frederick William Seward. They ahd

no children. They lived in DC as Frederick William Seward was William Henry

Seward's assistant when William Henry Seward was Secretary of State. Anna M.

Seward was William Henry Seward's 'woman of the house.' She held parties and

banquets and received callers for William Henry Seward to keep up their presence in

DC society. To our delight, Fred went on to marry Anna Wharton. She became just like

a sister to me and another daughter to my father and mother. Fred and Anna helped my

father a great deal during their marriage. Anna became an important face to the public

by becoming my father’s hostess. She was in charge of political dinner parties in

Washington, D.C. and kept track of the many guests father received as well as incoming

letters. When father traveled to Alaska and California at the end of his life, Anna and

Fred traveled with him. Eventually, they would move to a house they called Montrose

in the Hudson River Valley. Many of their possessions from that home, including a big

table that belonged to Ann,a were brought back to the Auburn home and are still there

today. Father died before completing his autobiography so Fred finished it for him, and

then went on to write about his own political experiences. Fred was a loyal family man

who helped his father throughout his life at home as well as in his political career.7

Benjamin Jennings Seward (August 23, 1793 – February 24, 1841) William Henry

Seward’s brother. He was married to Marcia Seward (May 17, 1819) and had four

Seward’s mother. Married with Samuel Sweezy Seward (June 2, 1792) they had five

children: Benjamin Jennings Seward, Edwin Polydore Seward, William Henry Seward,

Louisa Cornelia Canfield and George Washington Seward.

Augustus Seward (May 18, 1820 – May 8, 1889) Son of Benjamin Jennings Seward

and Patience Armstrong. Augustus Seward was the minister of several churches in

Orange County and also served as President of the Seward Institute, founded by his

grandfather, Samuel S. Seward. He married trice with Sarah Ann Finn and Cornelia

Seward Finn.
