funded project report developed by Phillip Rogers-Falk, with a view to determining which, if any of these could be meaningfully generalised to other academic elements in the University. The Pathways Model had, in turn, built on the work of the previous Griffith Indigenous Australian Studies Working Party, and their Final Report – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges at Griffith (June 2005).

8.2 The outcome was a recommendation to the Griffith Learning and Teaching Committee for a whole-of-University approach to Indigenous Learning and Teaching Practices contained in the document Pathways to indigenous inclusive teaching and learning practices - Discussion paper (September 2007). This recommendation was subsequently approved by Academic Committee in March, 2008, resulting in the establishment of the Advisory Group and Working Group.

8.3 As one of the strategies being implemented to support the University’s Statement on Reconciliation (May, 2007), Griffith has made a commitment to the following broad goals relating to indigenous curriculum content:-

• to develop a culturally appropriate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander curriculum which is inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, knowledges and perspectives, and to support its sensitive implementation in degree programs; and

• to design culturally sensitive learning and teaching strategies and to train, develop and support academic staff in their use;

8.4 These goals remain current and much work has been done through the Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander Inclusive Curriculum Development and Implementation Working Group. The group is supported by Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) co-investigators, Dr Chris Matthews and Professor Keithia Wilson.

8.5 The attached terms of reference (2011/0002789), endorsed by the Learning and Teaching Committee, propose an update to the membership of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusive Curriculum Development and Implementation Advisory Group and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusive Curriculum Development and Implementation Working Group. The proposal specifies positions or processes for nominations for membership, rather than names of individuals. It is proposed that the approving authority for membership be the University’s Learning and Teaching Committee. No changes to working party and advisory group functions are proposed.

Recommendation 8.6 The Academic Committee, on the recommendation of the 4/2011 Learning and

Teaching Committee (8 August) is asked to approve revised membership provisions of the Terms of Reference for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusive Curriculum Development and Implementation Advisory Group and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusive Curriculum Development and Implementation Working Group as described in document 2011/0002789 for immediate implementation.

From Learning and Teaching Committee 11.0 ASSESSMENT POLICY – MODIFICATION TO REVIEW OF GRADE PROVISIONS

11.1 The University's current Assessment Policy states 'Where a student believes that an

error has been made or an injustice done in respect of the grade awarded for a course, the student may request a review of the grade'.

11.2 The University Assessment Committee (UAC), a sub-committee of the Learning and

Teaching Committee, is currently responsible for reviewing the University’s approach to Assessment and the Assessment Policy. In discussing provisions for a review of grade in the new Assessment Policy, the UAC recommended changing the following provision to, 'Where a student can make a credible case to support a claim that an error has been made in respect of the grade awarded for a course, the student may request a review of the grade;' therefore a review on the basis of an 'injustice' would be no longer possible. Instead a review would be possible on the basis of an error occurring in the compilation of the overall grade from component assessment items, eg. a mathematical error or non-inclusion of the marks from a piece of assessment, or incorrect weighting of marks.

11.3 Given that a review of grade is to be based on error only, the UAC was of the view that

the requirement for a grievance about an assessment grade to be considered by the Course Convenor, the Dean (Learning and Teaching) and then appeal to the University Appeals Committee, is a lengthy process for determining whether an arithmetic, weighting or aggregation error has occurred. An alternative two-step process was proposed to, and endorsed by the Learning and Teaching Committee:

i) Course Convenor - Request a review of grade by the Course Convenor, as provided for in the Assessment Policy. If on review a change of grade is proposed the Course Convenor recommends a revised grade to the Chair, School Assessment Board.

ii) Dean (Learning and Teaching) - if still dissatisfied appeal to the Dean (Learning and Teaching).

11.4 Learning and Teaching Committee noted that the Dean (Learning and Teaching)'s

decision is final on this matter. 11.5 As a result, changes have been made to the Policy on Student Grievances and

Appeals, (2011/0002804) including updating the policy to reflect recent changes to the Student Charter. The Chair, University Appeals Committee has been consulted regarding these changes and is supportive of this development as it is likely to reduce the Appeals Committee’s workload.

11.6 This decision has resulted in some subsequent changes to Section 10 of the existing

Assessment Policy, which are set out in the attached document (2011/0002796). Learning and Teaching Committee members were keen to ensure that students be advised as part of latter revisions to the Assessment Policy that the outcome of a review of grade application could be either a lower or higher grade.

11.7 The Academic Registrar will introduce this item.

Resolution 11.8 The Academic Committee, on the recommendation of the Learning and Teaching

Committee (4/2011, 8 August) is asked to: a) approve the adoption of the revised Assessment Policy as described in

document 2011/0002796 from Semester 1, 2012; and b) recommend to the University Council changes to the Policy on Student

Grievances and Appeals as described in document 2011/0002804 (policy extract) for implementation from Semester 1, 2012.

13.0 PES NEW PROGRAM (2011/0002381) 5567 MASTER OF SPEECH PATHOLOGY

13.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (5/2011,

August) is asked to consider the proposal to establish the award of Master of Speech Pathology (MSpPath) (5567), as detailed in 2011/0002381, from Semester 1 2012.

13.2 The Master of Speech Pathology comprises 160CP undertaken over 2 years of full-

time study. The program provides an alternative to the usual career pathway of a 4 year bachelor program for students who already have an undergraduate degree. Potential applicants are anticipated from undergraduate degrees in disciplines such as psychology, health science, public health, medical science, education, linguistics (or a linguistics major). A number of undergraduate programs at the Gold Coast campus have been identified as likely feeder pathways: Bachelor of Health Science; Bachelor of Psychology; Bachelor of Public Health; Bachelor of Medical Science, plus the Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Applied Linguistics at Nathan campus.

13.3 An initial cap of 40 students (36 domestic and 4 international) on intake into the

program will be applied. To be eligible for admission to the Master of Speech Pathology, a student must have: • completed an undergraduate degree in a related field (not speech pathology) such

as psychology, health science, public health, medical science, human services, education, linguistics (or a degree with a linguistics major) with a minimum GPA of 5.0 and

• satisfactory performance in an interview with the Program Convenor

As the number of applicants may exceed the places available, selection for admission is competitive and will be based upon (1) academic merit and (2) interview.

13.4 It is proposed the minimum English language requirements for admission be higher than the standard minimum for postgraduate programs, as follows: • A minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of

less than 7.0 or • A minimum score of 580 on TOEFL or • An internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 92 (no score less than 23) or • No score less than 4 in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by GELI or ISLPR

Language Services only) or • A minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English

(CPE) • English test results must be no more than two years old.

13.5 The program will require professional accreditation from Speech Pathology Australia

(SPA) in order for graduates to be eligible for membership and to practise as speech pathologists in Australia and countries with a mutual recognition agreement. This accreditation occurs on a 5 yearly cycle. For a new speech pathology program the initial accreditation is negotiated by the graduation of the first cohort; which in the case of this program will be by the end of 2013. An arrangement has been entered into with Flinders University for staff from their speech pathology program to assist Griffith with the accreditation process for the 2012/2013 period.

13.6 To be eligible for the award of Master of Speech Pathology (MSpPath), a student

must have been awarded a suitable undergraduate degree and: • gain 160CP for courses in Years 1 and 2 • no more than 20CP (10CP per year) in which the grade of Pass Conceded has

been attained may be counted towards the degree requirements.

3268 GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN MIDDLE YEARS

15.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of the 5/2011 Programs Committee (August) is asked to consider the attached proposal to establish award of Graduate Certificate in Middle Years (GCertMidYears 3268) (Open Universities Australia), as detailed in 2011/0002371, for introduction in Study Period 1 2012.

15.2 The Graduate Certificate in Middle Years is a proposed new program offering through

Open Universities Australia to address the emerging national teacher education priorities within the middle years. Interest in up-skilling in this learning area will be highlighted by the introduction of the National Curriculum and the resulting response by States that will need to align and refocus on this phase of schooling. A particularly important example is Queensland where the announcement of Year 7 students moving into a high school setting is to begin from 2015. This move will create a need for teachers who have been trained in traditional primary or secondary programs to up-skill to meet the new demands of this change.

16.0 ENG NEW PROGRAM (2011/0002352)

5574 MASTER OF ENGINEERING (DUAL SPECIALISATION)

16.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (4/2011, July), is asked to consider the proposal to establish the Master of Engineering (Dual Specialisation) (MEng) (5574), as detailed in 2011/0002352, for introduction in Semester 2 2011.

16.2 This proposed new 2-year full-time (or equivalent) 160CP Masters program will utilise

the courses and disciplines in the existing Master of Engineering programs (5467/5468) and will enable students to complete two discipline areas within the single program. The currently offered 2-year program Master of Engineering with Advanced Studies (5528/5529) cannot accommodate the completion of two discipline areas as it contains a core research component. It is anticipated that the proposed program will be an attractive option for students whose interest is in extending their knowledge in a wider range of engineering disciplines by undertaking specialised engineering courses, rather than in research.

16.3 Demand for the proposed offering has been evidenced by the number of

postgraduate (mainly international) students seeking dual specialisation study in the Master of Engineering. A number of students have undertaken to achieve this by completing the Master of Engineering at one campus in a particular discipline area and then enrolling in the Master of Engineering again at the other campus to complete the second discipline area.

16.4 The following combinations of award disciplines are proposed for inclusion in the

Master of Engineering (Dual Specialisation):

- Structural and Geotechnical Engineering with Engineering Management (Gold Coast campus)

- Structural and Geotechnical Engineering with Environmental Engineering (requires students to complete courses at the Gold Coast and then Nathan campuses)

- Electronic and Computer Engineering with Engineering Management (requires students to complete courses at the Nathan and then Gold Coast campuses)

- Environmental Engineering with Engineering Management (requires students to complete courses at the Nathan and then Gold Coast campuses)

16.5 The Master of Engineering (Dual Specialisation) will be structured as follows:

20CP of core courses 60CP of courses from the first discipline study area 60CP of courses from the second discipline study area 20CP of approved elective courses

3265 GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN SCREEN PRODUCTION 4158 GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF SCREEN PRODUCTION 5572 MASTER OF SCREEN PRODUCTION 5573 MASTER OF SCREEN PRODUCTION WITH HONOURS

19.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of the 6/2011 Programs Committee

(September) meeting, is asked to consider a proposal (2011/0002390) to establish the Graduate Certificate in Screen Production (3265), Graduate Diploma of Screen Production (4158), Master of Screen Production (5572) and Master of Screen Production with Honours (5573), for introduction in semester 1, 2012.

19.2 Programs Committee first reviewed this proposal at its August 2011 meeting at which

time it expressed a number of concerns about the minimum amount of specialisation work required for that specialisation to be noted on a student’s testamur. Programs Committee agreed that the expectation for award specialisations in Masters programs should be a minimum of 40CP.

19.3 Concerns were also expressed that the basis on which the interview for admission will

be assessed was not clear in the submission and will require the development of transparent criteria. It was noted that for each interview, interviewers will need to document the basis for selection or non-selection against these criteria.

Page 17: GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC COMMITTEE NOTICE OF …€¦ · SECTION I: STRATEGIC ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION 6.0 PRESENTATION – GRIFFITH’S STRATEGIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

Academic Committee Agenda 5/2011 Thursday 15 September 2011

19.4 A revised proposal addressing these concerns has now been considered and endorsed by Programs Committee (September). Specific changes include:

- the interview has been removed from the admissions process. - the 20CP specialisations have been replaced with a 40CP Screen Production

Specialisation, for which the following description is provided: a suite of four courses that aims to progressively develop in the student the highest possible skills in a specific specialist screen production practice. The courses provide advanced craft training, promote reflective professional activity, require independent research and offer opportunities for innovative and creative accomplishment. Expert tuition, collaborative project work and an independent research component provide a platform for the student to undertake a negotiated activity in an area directly related to the student's professional specialisation.

Recommendation

19.5 Academic Committee, on the recommendation Programs Committee (6/2011, September), is asked to approve the establishment of the Graduate Certificate in Screen Production (3265) (GCertScrPr), Graduate Diploma of Screen Production (4158) (GDipScrPr), Master of Screen Production (5572) (MScrPr) and Master of Screen Production with Honours (5573) (MScrPr), as detailed in 2011/0002390, for introduction in Semester 1 2012.

For approval

20.0 ENG MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0004284)

1310/1311 BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING 1320 BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (ADVANCED STUDIES)

20.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (4/2011, July)

is asked to consider proposed changes to the Bachelor of Engineering (1310/1311) and Bachelor of Engineering (Advanced Studies) (1320), as detailed in 2011/0004284, for implementation in Semester 1 2012.

20.2 The Griffith School of Engineering proposes to introduce a new award major in

Mechanical Engineering within the Gold Coast offerings of the Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering (Advanced Studies). A staged introduction of the new award major is proposed, commencing with first year in 2012 followed by years 2, 3 and 4 rolled out progressively in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

20.3 The submission advises that the proposal is made on the basis of the following

considerations:

• The proposal aims to broaden the Griffith School of Engineering profile at the Gold Coast campus to include the “traditional” engineering disciplines and fits with the objective of the Academic Plan to develop the Gold Coast campus as the “comprehensive” campus of Griffith University.

• The proposal was supported by the School of Engineering Industry Advisory

Board and endorsed by Engineers Australia at their 2010 Accreditation visit.

• Significant student, employer and community demand exists for Mechanical Engineering at the Gold Coast campus.

• Nationally Mechanical and Industrial Engineering attracts a larger proportion of

students (17%) than Civil Engineering (10.5%) (DEST data 2006), and the proportion of engineering students choosing mechanical engineering has remained steady for the last decade. Civil engineering currently attracts the largest numbers of students to the existing array of engineering offerings on the Gold Coast.

Page 18: GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC COMMITTEE NOTICE OF …€¦ · SECTION I: STRATEGIC ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION 6.0 PRESENTATION – GRIFFITH’S STRATEGIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

Academic Committee Agenda 5/2011 Thursday 15 September 2011

• There is significant common ground between Mechanical and the other

traditional Engineering disciplines (civil and electrical) already on offer at Gold Coast. This proposal offers the potential for further enhancing teaching efficiency.

20.4 To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering),

a student must acquire 320CP as prescribed below:

• 260CP for courses as prescribed for the discipline • 40CP for the Industrial Affiliates Program • 20CP for free-choice electives • complete 4002ENG Industry Experience (0CP) • no more than 40CP for courses in which the grade of Pass Conceded has been

awarded can be counted towards the 320CP required to complete the degree.

20.5 The University’s standard minimum English language requirements for entry to undergraduate programs will apply.

20.6 Accreditation of the Bachelor of Engineering and its majors by Engineers Australia is

appraised on a five-year rolling basis with the last accreditation being in 2010. Engineers Australia awards provisional accreditation to approved programs (majors in Griffith terminology) that have not produced their first graduates, with full accreditation only being awarded to approved programs that have produced graduates. The introduction of this new major will require the School to apply for provisional accreditation for the major by mid 2012 (the first year of offer) with full accreditation expected in 2016. Planning for the accreditation process for this new major is underway.

Recommendation 20.7 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of the Programs Committee (4/2011,

July), is asked to approve the introduction of a new award major in Mechanical Engineering within the Bachelor of Engineering (1310/1311) and Bachelor of Engineering (Advanced Studies) (1320), as detailed in 2011/0004284 from Semester 1 2012.

• Introduce an advanced standing pathway, whereby graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Children’s Services, Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management or Advanced Diploma in Community Services Work, with at least two years industry experience in the early childhood or related sectors, will receive 160CP of advanced standing and complete the remaining 80CP of the bachelors degree by off-campus on-line study over four semesters.

34.3 The pathway has been developed at the request of Education Queensland and the

Department of Education and Training (DET) specifically for DET scholarship holders, who will complete the Bachelor of Child and Family Studies in semester 1 or semester 2 2013, then gain automatic entry to the Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education (offered by the School of Education and Professional Studies) and complete the Graduate Diploma in semester 1 or 2 2015. However the pathway is also available to Advanced Diploma non-scholarship holders and it is anticipated that demand from these students may result in continuation of the pathway beyond the above timeframes. Students who complete this pathway will be eligible for teacher registration in Queensland and will be able to undertake the role of pedagogical leader in child care centres in Australia.

34.4 To be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Child and Family Studies (BChiFamSt), students in this Advanced Diploma strand must acquire 240CP as prescribed below: • gain 160CP of advanced standing for year 1 and 2 courses • gain 80CP for core courses in Year 3 • successfully complete a senior first aid certificate • gain no more than 10CP (of the total 80CP) for courses with a grade of Pass

Conceded. The grade of Pass Conceded for a course which is a prerequisite for a later course is not regarded as sufficient for meeting the prerequisite requirement

Recommendation

34.5 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (4/2011, July), is asked to approve proposed changes to the Bachelor of Child and Family Studies (1095), as detailed in 2011/0003803, for implementation in Semester 2 2011.

For approval 35.0 QCGU MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0003315) 1196 BACHELOR OF POPULAR MUSIC

35.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September), is asked to approve proposed changes to the Bachelor of Popular Music (1196), as detailed in 2011/0003315, for implementation in Semester 1 2012.

35.2 The Queensland Conservatorium proposes the following changes to the Bachelor of

Popular Music as an outcome of the five year review of the program conducted in 2011:

• Increase the music theory content, which is of particular importance to graduates

progressing to a secondary music education pathway and to students pursuing careers as session musicians. In addition, address the reported concerns of students that they are not sufficiently prepared in music theory and computer technologies for undertaking 2324QCM Composing and Arranging in semester 1 Year 3. As a result of these findings, it is proposed that Creative Music Technologies be extended over 4 semesters with aligned music theory tutorials extended over the same period. This change will necessitate the removal of Rhythm Studies 1 and 2 with some content absorbed into Creative Music Technologies 3 and 4.

Page 28: GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC COMMITTEE NOTICE OF …€¦ · SECTION I: STRATEGIC ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION 6.0 PRESENTATION – GRIFFITH’S STRATEGIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

• Increase the flexibility of structure and content to allow for specialisation and targeted career paths. As a result, it is proposed to offer free choice electives in place of Rhythm Studies 2 in Year 2 semester 2 and as alternatives to Composing and Arranging in Year 2 semester 1 and Audio Production 2 in Year 3 semester 2.

• Rename 2109QCM Popular Music as Technology to Technology and Music and 3109QCM Classical Goes to the Movies to Popular Classical Music to better reflect the focus and content of these courses.

• Simplify the way the degree requirements are expressed. Under the revised degree rules, to be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Popular Music (BPopMus), a student must acquire 240CP as specified below: • Complete 80CP of prescribed courses in year 1 • Complete 160CP for courses in Years 2 and 3, including 130CP of core courses • complete no more than 100CP of first year level courses and at least 60CP of third

year level courses • gain no more than 30CP for courses in which the grade of Pass Conceded has

been attained.

Recommendation

35.3 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011, September), is asked to approve proposed changes to the Bachelor of Popular Music (1196), as detailed in 2011/0003315, for implementation in Semester 1 2012.

For approval 36.0 ENV MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0004305)

1315/1007 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION BIOLOGY)

36.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011, September), is asked to consider proposed changes to the Bachelor of Science (Ecology and Conservation Biology) (1315/1007), as described in 2011/0004305, and for implementation in Semester 2, 2011.

36.2 Amend degree requirements to remove the requirement that 30CP of listed Ecology

and Conservation Biology courses must be at 3rd year level. The current requirement has been limiting to students who wish to complete three or more listed Ecology and Conservation Biology electives at second year level in line with their study interests and career goals. This change does not affect the degree requirement that students must complete at least 60CP of course at Year 3 level in accordance with University policy. It is proposed that this change to the degree requirements will apply to both commencing and continuing students. The change does not disadvantage continuing students as it widens the choice available for them.

Add the following three courses to the listed electives list:

• 3052ENV Emerging Issues in Aquatic Ecology • 3181ENV/3191ENV Special Topic

Recommendation

36.3 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011, September), is asked to approve proposed changes to the Bachelor of Science (Ecology and Conservation Biology) (1315/1007), as detailed in 2011/0004305, for implementation in Semester 2, 2011.

37.0 ENG MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0004294) 1310/1311/1320 BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING, BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (ADVANCED STUDIES) 37.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September), is asked to consider the submission (2011/0004294) proposing to remove the requirement to complete courses 1113ICT, 1114ICT and 1115ICT Writing Skills 1, 2 and 3, which is currently a requirement for students commencing prior to 2010 only. The proposal is made on the basis of the following considerations:

• The requirement to complete the Writing Skills courses has been removed from the Engineering programs from 2010 due to the School of Information and Communication Technology advising that these courses will not be offered in the future. The courses are currently offered in reduced capacity to students commencing prior to 2010 as on-line courses attached to the Logan campus.

• The current arrangement is creating confusion for students and causing difficulty as students are required to undertake exams at the Logan campus. The School has waived this requirement for students graduating in semester 2 2010 and 1 2011.

• Students commencing prior to 2010 have been advised by email that this requirement is waived, and removal of this requirement does not disadvantage any students who may have already undertaken these courses, as they have 0CP load.

Recommendation

37.2 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September), is asked to approve the proposed changes to the Bachelor of Engineering (1310/1320) and Bachelor of Engineering (Advanced Studies) (1320), as described in (2011/0004294) be approved for implementation from Semester 2 2011.

For approval 38.0 PES MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0003811)

The program was introduced for hospital-trained registered nurses wishing to upgrade their nursing qualification and it was anticipated that over time demand would diminish with nursing training relocated to universities. The School is unable to withdraw the program from offer at this point owing to contractural arrangements relating to the Singapore delivery of the program;

• Change the IELTS requirement from an overall band score of 7.0 with no sub

score less than 6.5 to an overall band score of 7.0 with no sub score less than 7.0, in line with the registration requirements with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency (AHPRA), effective Semester 1, 2012;

• Update course offerings as a result of the introduction of the new Bachelor of

Nursing - Preregistration curriculum in 2011.

Recommendation 39.2 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September) is asked to approve the proposed changes to the Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration) (1163/1164), including suspending intake into the program, as described in (2011/0003813) from Semester 2 2011.

40.0 NRS MAJOR CHANGE SUBMISSION (2011/0003816) 1161/1162/1165 BACHELOR OF NURSING 40.1 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September) is asked to consider the submission (2011/0003816) proposing to withdraw the Graduate Entry Strand pathway within the Bachelor of Nursing (1161/1162/1165) programs, effective Semester 1, 2012.

40.2 The following proposed withdrawal of the Graduate Entry Strand is the outcome of a

number of issues including:

• QTAC has been required to adjust processes to provide an early application for students entering the Graduate Entry strand;

• Student Administration has been required to provide early enrolment and matriculation for these students;

• The early scheduling (December/January) of the introductory summer semester courses has proven problematic to students, with many withdrawing from the program before commencement;

• The introductory anatomy, physiology and clinical assessment courses are unable to provide a grounding equivalent to 80CP of first year nursing courses;

• Graduate Entry students are in general struggling with second year course content, resulting in high failure rates;

• Clinical Placements outside of normal semesters (i.e., during December/January) have been problematic to source and costly to fund;

• Mandatory requirements (i.e., vaccinations etc) are unable to be completed by commencing Graduate Entry students in the timeframe allocated between the acceptance of QTAC offers and the commencement of the first summer semester clinical placement;

• Logistically and financially, the School is no longer able to support Graduate Entry students.

40.3 The proposed change is in line with a key recommendation from the Bachelor of

Nursing review in 2010 and the External Review of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2010 to reduce the number of multiple entry points and associated strands in the Bachelor of Nursing program.

Recommendation 40.4 Academic Committee, on the recommendation of Programs Committee (6/2011,

September) is asked to approve the withdrawal of the Graduate Entry Strand pathway within the Bachelor of Nursing (1161/1162/1165), as described in 2011/0003816, for implementation from Semester 1 2012.

41.2 In 2007, the Health Group introduced a Foundation Year consisting of a suite of first year courses, developed around shared knowledge underpinning programs offered by the Schools of Dentistry and Oral Health, Medical Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Exercise Science and Public Health. As part of its continuing improvement processes, the Health Group reviewed the Foundation Year in 2010. It found that although the Year had been a success in terms of providing foundational knowledge for students enrolled in its constituent degree programs, there were a number of changes that were required to improve its relevance, content and structure, including:

• Inclusion of some discipline-based content in first year to enable students to develop a stronger sense of purpose linked to their chosen professional area.

• Introduction of more flexibility in individual program structures across the Schools.

• Rectification of identified deficiencies in course content for some existing courses.

• Improvement in course sequencing across the year.
