Operational Superiority with Low Cost Training and Support
Gripen is the first new generation multi-role fighter in service , designed to meet the demands of current and future threat scenarios whilst
maintaining stringent requirements for flight safety, reliability, training efficiency and low operating costs.
Outstanding Operational Capability
Gripen is a highly agile multi-role supersonic combat aircraft embodying state-of-the-art sensors, data link, sensor fusion and mission computation.
The Human Machine Interface (HMI) of Gripen provides pilots with outstanding situational awareness. These features, coupled with the ability to
carry and release the most modern precision weapons, ensure that Gripen has a tactical advantage and unrivalled muti-role mission effectiveness
over every other fighter in its class.
Cost-effective application of new technologies
By incorporating new materials, advanced production technology,
powerful integrated computer systems and the latest aerodynamics,
Gripen has been designed with low acquisition, operating and through
life costs in mind. This design philosophy focused on high reliability,
low support requirements and fast turn around times. The result is a
combat aircraft with high operational availability at a fraction of the
cost of other aircraft of its class.
Continuous Development Programme
The advanced design of Gripen new generation avionics architecture
and airframe supports the development and introduction of new roles
and capabilities to meet defence requirements of the future
throughout the service life of the aircraft. This continuous
enhancement programme will maintain the superior air combat
capability of Gripen.
NATO Interoperability
Interoperability is a fundamental requirement for NATO operations,
both in support of collective defense and out of area operations.
Gripen is NATO interoperable and supports all the NATO priorities
for standardization of doctrines and procedures including NATO
standard data link communications and air-to-air refueling.
GripenCapabilityNo Ordinary Fighter
Supersonic Air Defence
The superior capability of Gripen in air-to-air combat at Beyond Visual
Range (BVR) is achieved through a combination of aircraft
performance, state of the art radar system, advanced and proven
tactical data link integration and provision for AIM-120 Advanced
Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM). At closer ranges,
Gripens combat capability is assured by unrivalled aircraft agility
coupled with the highly effective Mauser Bk 27 cannon and various
close range missiles including the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
Multi-Role Flexibility
The multi-role capability of Gripen, with its ability to change roles in
the air at the press of a button, results in a unique swing-role, multi-
mission flexibility. This flexibility is further enhanced by Gripens ability
to operate from dispersed sites, including ordinary roads, with very
low turn around times using the minimum of Ground Support
Equipment (GSE).
The dual seat version of the aircraft has the same capability as the
single seat with the additional tactical advantage of a becoming a
localized command and control centre during multiple aircraft
operations. The dual seat can also be used as a tactical training
aircraft.
Advanced targeting sensors and a tactical data link complement the
dedicated air-to-surface radar modes of the aircraft, these, combined
with a wide range of modern precision weapons, make Gripen a
formidable force in air-to-surface operations. This capability is
supported by a highly effective tactical reconnaissance capacity usingthe on-board radar and sensor pods.

Cockpit and Display SystemThe digital Gripen cockpit is dominated by three large, full colour,
multi-function displays (MFDs) and a wide angle diffractive optics
head-up display (HUD) with a holographic combiner. A highly efficient
Human Machine Interface (HMI) has been integrated into Gripen to
substantially ease pilot workload, particularly in combat situations.
The main functions of each display are:
Head-Up Display (HUD) providing FLIR imagery and weapon aiming
information superimposed on the outside world at all altitudes.
Flight Data Display (FDD) provides flight data and system status
information about the engine, fuel and external stores.
Horizontal Situation Display (HSD) provides navigational and tactical
mission data superimposed on an electronic map of selectable scale.
Multi-Sensor Display (MSD) presents information from the radar, FLIR
imagery and other sensors. Flight and fire control data are also
superimposed.
RadarThe primary sensor of the Gripen target acquisition/weapons aiming
system is the Ericsson PS-05/A radar. This radar is a compact, long-
range, high performance multi-mode pulse-Doppler radar with a
modular architecture and high reliability, offering high resolution,
excellent look-down performance and good ECCM capabilities. Using
state-of-the-art technology, including fully programmable signal and
data processors, the radar is able to handle all types of air defence, air
to surface and reconnaissance missions with built in growth potential
to meet future requirements.
PowerplantThe Volvo Aero Corporation RM12 is a modular, fuel efficient, low
bypass ratio, afterburning turbofan in the 80 KN (18,000lb) thrust
class. This engine is based upon the General Electric F-404-400 -
which has attained several million flight hours in operations world
wide - with several enhancements incorporated by Volvo, including
increased thrust and bird strike resistance.
