Ignite Passion, Pursue Purpose, Rise to Your Worth

From the Principal

Welcome back, Grizzlies! We have had a busy summer of construction-related activities in prep-

aration for the beginning of the school year. It looks like we will be down to the wire in gaining

access for the first day of school, but everything is going smoothly. A couple of updates on what

students, parents and staff will notice when they arrive on the first day of school:

Main Street will connect from the main entrance all the way to the old commons. This will

be the only inside access from the new part of the building to the old part of the building

for the 2018-19 school year. Construction will take place on both sides of main street

throughout the year

Red Gym and White Gym are gone. For the 2018-19 school year, PE classes for freshman

will take place in the fieldhouse, weight training and yoga will take place at Adams, while

Cardio Fit and SAQ will take place in the food court. All afterschool athletics that need a gym

will take place off site, including Patton, Duniway and Linfield College.

Parking will be limited for the 2018-19 school year. Construction will occupy the entire new

parking lot north of the CTC. That pushes the student parking to the lot south of the CTC. So

student parking will be available to SENIORS ONLY to begin the year.

SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT: This year, you will see more staff supervision at the entrances to our

buildings. This will allow us to move students much quicker in and out of the four buildings that

make up the MHS extended campus. During the school day, students will be able to enter at the

north Adams door, the 15th and Evans door, the main entrance and the CTC and fieldhouse main

doors. Each door will have supervision throughout the day and will remain locked during class

time. Staff will open the door for students to enter when traveling between buildings during

class time.

I believe McMinnville High School is one of the best high schools in Oregon. In order to continue

this legacy, it is imperative that students and parents alike have a voice within this system. Thus, I

will work hard to gather your feedback and ideas throughout the year. Together, we can make

each and every student’ experience one that empowers them to pursue their purpose and rise to

their worth. It is going to be a great year.

Go Grizzlies!

FALL REGISTRATION 2018-2019

School at McMinnville High School will begin for freshmen on Tuesday, September 4th at 8:00 a.m. All other stu-dents will begin school on Wednesday, September 5th. Prior to attending classes, all MHS students must be regis-tered. Please see the following schedule to find registration times. To make the registration process quicker, you can update emergency information, fill out forms, and pay fines and fees online. To do this, go to http://mhs.msd.k12.or.us/ and follow the links posted.

FORECASTED STUDENTS (students who already have chosen their classes)

All students must come in at the beginning of each year to complete the registration process, regardless of previous attendance at MHS. You may update emergency information, sign technology agreements, and pay fines and fees online, prior to arrival at registration. Students who have not done the online portion can do so on the regis-tration days below. In addition, they will be able to have their ID picture taken for the Student Body card. Once they have had their ID card photo taken, students can pick up their schedules. Students must be present in order to get their schedules. ID pictures must be taken before schedules are issued. Parents will not be able to go beyond the fees table without their students. If you choose to register online prior to one of the dates below, you will still need to come in for student pictures for ID cards and schedule pick-up. Students are to report at one of the following times:

DAY DATE TIME

Thursday August 23 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Monday August 27 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday September 4 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday September 5 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Registering the first day will not change your forecasted schedule. Schedules are set at this time. Every attempt was made in the spring for each student to meet with his/her counselor and forecast his/her classes for the 2018-2019 school year. Schedules were developed using these requests. Staffing at McMinnville High School is based on this forecasting information. Therefore, requests for a schedule change will not be approved. Every attempt has been made to meet the needs of our students, but due to the reduction in staffing, we were not able to offer all of the courses, nor were we always able to honor the first request for each student.

NEW STUDENTS TO MCMINNVILLE HIGH SCHOOL All high school students new to McMinnville School District will need to come on one of the registration days, with their transcript, to see a counselor to set up their schedule. If you are not able to make it to one of the above listed dates, please call 503.565.4216 to schedule an appointment and do the necessary paperwork. These students in-clude all NEW students to the McMinnville School District, and any MHS student and any incoming Duniway and Patton student who DID NOT complete forecasting schedules last spring.

School Pictures Taken Only During Registration School photos will be taken during registration in August. School photo sessions will not be made available during the school year. This allows for less interruption to in-structional time for MHS students and staff as we settle into the new school year.

LifeTouch Photography will be taking photographs during registration. You should be receiving a postcard from them prior to registration. This postcard has the student picture day I.D. number on it. Keep this number for online ordering at a later date. Every student will receive a sample picture and parents may order more pho-tos online at my.lifetouch.com. Photos can also be ordered the traditional way through picture packets. Please note: All students are photographed whether they are buying pictures or not. Pictures are needed for ID cards.

Attendance REALLY Matters!!!

Research shows that students who attend school regularly (missing 1 or fewer days per month) receive better grades, are more connected to their teachers and classmates, are more engaged with school in general and have a higher on-time graduation rate. Did you know that any student who misses 1.5 days or more per month is considered CHORONI-CALLY ABSENT from school? . PLEASE help your child be successful this year by mak-ing sure that they attend school each and every day. With your help, we can help all stu-dents achieve and succeed. For attendance support, please call 503.565.4245.

Dear Parents of all McMinnville High School Athletes:

The McMinnville Athletic Club is actively seeking new members and would like to invite you to be-

come a member of a great group of people whose support not only benefits all of our student athletes

and athletics at our McMinnville Schools, but also benefits all students at McMinnville High School. Being a member is very re-

warding and there are no membership fees.

The club has donated the training/fitness room equipment and continues to replace the equipment as needed which is used by all

students attending McMinnville High School. The MAC has also helped with the construction of the buildings at the softball facili-

ty, the new concession stand located at the stadium and a new baseball score board.

The club runs the football concessions and BBQ at home varsity football games, sells great merchandise at many sporting events

and school activities, and our major fundraiser is the annual Crab Feed & Auction held in the spring. We also award scholarships to

graduating senior athletes and have an opportunity to recognize outstanding athletes participating in fall, winter and spring sports

during school assemblies.

Please take the time to complete and return the form below indicating how you would be interested in supporting the MAC by

checking the activities listed. We are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization and contributions are tax deductible. Your volunteer

help and support are greatly appreciated. We look forward to meeting you and having you become involved in our great organiza-

tion.

Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 at MHS . Please join us.

BACK THE MAC!!!!!!

Introduction to ASPIRE ASPIRE (Access to Student assistance Programs In Reach of Everyone) serves students by assisting students in finding the right education/training program and by educating students and families about options for paying for postsecondary education. Participation in this beneficial program can help promote success. Students meet one to four times per month with their mentor on the high school campus. Meetings generally last about 30 minutes and are held at lunch, before or after school.

To Participate in ASPIRE, both the student and parent or guardian must sign the Participation Agreement allowing program staff and the student’s mentor to view his/her academic, attendance and disciplinary records to aid in achiev-ing long-term success. The student should complete the Student Matching Form to help the ASPIRE Program Coordi-nator match the student with a mentor. Students can pick up forms in the career center or download them from the MHS website. For further information, please access the ASPIRE website at http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/ as-pire.aspx or contact: Lisa Johnson, ASPIRE Program Coordinator @ 503.565.4270 or email her at [email protected]
