1. INTRODUCTION Endeavour Drilling Ltd received instruction to carry out ground investigations to aid in the design and construction of new office units within an existing car park linked to the Sovereign Harbour retail development, Harbour Quay, The Crumbles, Eastbourne, East Sussex. The nearest postcode to the site is BN23 6JH.
The ground investigation was instructed by the Client, TPS Consult, and comprised of the forming of seven small diameter window sampler boreholes, and four machine excavated trial pits, with associated sampling and insitu testing. Two window sample positions were selected for dynamic probing after the window sample could not progress further. Laboratory testing comprising of geotechnical and chemical analysis was also undertaken.
This report presents the factual findings of the investigation along with the results of the laboratory testing undertaken.
The work was carried out in general accordance with BS EN 1997-2:2007 Eurocode 7: Geotechnical Design, Ground Investigation and Testing, and other relevant standards that are referenced within the text.
2. LIMITATIONS
This report is based on the results of the exploratory window sample boreholes and trial pits, the laboratory testing carried out on samples recovered from the window sample boreholes and trial pits, and on details of the scheme provided by the Client.
This report has been prepared for the benefit of TPS Consult and its contents should not be relied upon by others without the written authority of Endeavour Drilling Ltd (ED).
If any unauthorised third party makes use of this report they do so at their own risk and ED owes them no duty of care or skill.
Subsoils are by their nature hidden from view and no investigation can be exhaustive to the extent that all soil conditions are revealed. Conditions may well be present beneath the site which was not evident from the investigations carried out.
Groundwater levels can be subject to considerable seasonal variations, and the conditions encountered in the exploratory borehole may not reflect long-term conditions.
Report Title: Sovereign Harbour, The Crumbles, Eastbourne July 2014 Ground Investigation Report Report No: END14-218 P a g e | 5
3. FIELDWORK The fieldwork was undertaken between the 17th to 18th June 2014 and comprised the forming of seven shallow window sampler boreholes (WS1-7) to a target depth of 5.00mbgl, with two positions being explored further through dynamic probing (WS5, WS7), and four machine excavated trial pits (TP1-4). The boreholes and trial pits were backfilled upon completion.
The window sample hole and trial pit positions were predetermined by the Clients representative prior to undertaking the fieldwork. The exploratory hole location plan is presented as Figure 1 in Appendix A.
The window sample hole position was CAT scanned for the presence of underground buried services by suitably trained staff of ED and an inspection pit to 1.20m depth was then dug to identify the presence of any buried services prior to commencing sampling.
3.1. Window Sampler Boreholes
The window sampler holes were formed to depths of between 3.45m (WS7) and 5.00mbgl (WS1-3, WS6). The window sampling utilised a two man crew, operating a track mounted hydraulic power pack and percussive hammer to drive a series of small diameter tubes into the ground.
Standard or Cone Penetration Tests (SPT / CPT), were undertaken at alternate 1.00m intervals using an automatic trip hammer. The number of blows required to advance a standard split spoon over the final 300mm of a 450mm total drive was recorded and is shown on the borehole records as the penetration resistance (‘N’ value).
Disturbed samples were recovered from throughout the window sampler holes for possible future chemical and geotechnical testing. Samples were recovered in air tight plastic containers, and then stored in refrigerated cool boxes for transport to the analytical laboratory.
Groundwater observations were undertaken during the drilling of each window sample hole. When groundwater was encountered, sampling was suspended for 20 minutes to measure the change in water levels. Water levels are presented on the respective window sample logs.
The window sampler hole logs are presented in Appendix B and give both descriptions and depths of strata encountered, together with details of samples taken, in-situ tests and any other relevant information.
Report Title: Sovereign Harbour, The Crumbles, Eastbourne July 2014 Ground Investigation Report Report No: END14-218 P a g e | 6
3.2. Super Heavy Weight Dynamic Probes (SHDP)
Dynamic probing (WS05-DP and WS07-DP) was undertaken after window sampling met refusal from depths of 3.0m (WS07-DP) and 4m (WS05-DP). It should be noted that both dynamic samples terminated at 5.50mbgl in medium dense strata due to collapsing boreholes, where further driving would have caused damage or loss of equipment.
SHDP is carried out to BS EN ISO 22476-2:2005 and requires the drop weight to be 63.5kg over a drop distance of 500mm. A sacrificial cone of 50mm diameter was placed on the bottom of a 35mm diameter 6 kg probing rod and lowered until it touched the ground. Any self weight penetration would be recorded.
The drop weight is then activated on the rig and the number of blows required to achieve 100mm penetration is recorded (N100). This process is repeated with extra rods being added every metre until full depth is reached or refusal occurs (50 Blows). The hydraulic ram on the rig is then used to extract the probing rods, leaving the cone in the ground.
The results of the super heavy weight dynamic probing are presented in Appendix D.
3.3. Machine Excavated Trial Pits
The machine excavated trial pits were formed to a final depth of between 1.30m (TP4) to 3.70mbgl (TP1).On completion the trial pits were backfilled with arisings.
Environmental and disturbed samples were recovered from the Made Ground encountered in the trial pits for chemical and geotechnical testing.
Note was made of any groundwater encountered, stability of the trial pit sides during excavation.
The trial pit records together are presented in Appendix C and give both descriptions and depths of strata encountered, together with details of samples taken, and any other relevant information.
3.4. Geology
The British Geological Survey 1:50,000 scale map of the area, Sheet 334, Eastbourne, Solid and Drift Edition, indicates superficial Storm Beach deposits comprising primarily of gravels to outcrop beneath the site which is underlain in turn by the Weald Clay Formation and Lower Greensand Group, both of the Cretaceous Period.
Report Title: Sovereign Harbour, The Crumbles, Eastbourne July 2014 Ground Investigation Report Report No: END14-218 P a g e | 7
4. LABORATORY TESTING The laboratory testing programme comprised of both geotechnical and chemical analysis for use in classifying and assigning strength parameters for ground conditions encountered as well as determining potential contamination.
All laboratory testing was undertaken by UKAS / MCERTS accredited laboratories; the geotechnical testing by Professional Soils Laboratory, chemical analysis by the Environmental Laboratory. The results are included in Appendices E and F respectively.
4.1. Geotechnical Testing
The geotechnical laboratory testing was undertaken to provide classification data and strength characteristics on selected samples.
A total of six samples were tested for moisture content to enable the materials to be classified and their engineering behaviour assessed in accordance with BS1377, Part 2:1990; clause 3.2, 4.4, 5.3 and 5.4.
Atterberg limits were determined for three samples of cohesive material to enable there the materials to be classified and their engineering behaviour assessed in accordance with BS1377, Part 2:1990; clause 3.2, 4.4, 5.3 and 5.4.
Four particle size distribution tests were carried out on non cohesive soil, both using the wet and dry sieve methods. These tests were undertaken in accordance with BS1377, Part 2:1990; clause 9.
The quantitative determination of the particle size distribution for fine soils, from coarse silt to clay was undertaken on four samples, assessed in accordance with BS1377, Part 2: 1990, clause 9.4, using the sedimentation by pipette method.
4.2. Chemical Analysis
A total of eight samples of soil were analysed for a comprehensive range of determinants comprising:
Arsenic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Cadmium Semi-volatile Organic Compounds (SVOC) Chromium Speciated Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) Copper Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) Cyanide (Total) Water Soluble Sulphate Lead Acid Soluble Sulphate Nickel Total Organic Carbon
