Social Network Site
Avoid the concept of “networking”
Uses social “ties”

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ec/Gmail_Logo.svg/1280px-Gmail_Logo.svg.png
Problems NOT that the Internet is anonymous but profiles can be altered
Example: MTV Catfish
Some sites are easier to remain anonymous
- Twitter http://cdn.patch.com/users/44719/2016/02/T800x600/20160256d0fe0583124.jpg
Social Interactions
-The study of how individuals interact in social settings has been the focus of research for more than 50 years. -Now this research has focused towards the social settings over social media. (Facebook, Twitter, snapchat, Instagram, etc)
Sociogram
- “Sociogram” how positive traits such as enthusiasm and maturity may be related to judgments about “sincerity” of another’s conversation.
-A sociogram is a visual depiction of the relationships between a specific group. The purpose of a sociogram is to uncover the underlying relationships between people. A sociogram can be used to increase your understanding of group behaviors.
Linkage And Connection - Web linkage and connection to the web is a mass mediated AND one
to one form of communication.
-The web the web is both a form of technology and a form of media, and it links individuals and nations into one communication network. (Sharing news globally)
Identity
-Online Identity, users may think they are posting anonymously, but in fact internet protocol otherwise known as IP address can be tracked backed to the original source of interest by the government and other entities.
- In other words be careful what you post online especially in social media. A perfect example of this is snapchat and how the “company is committed to assisting law enforcement investigations as the law requires.”
Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace
-The declaration of the independence of cyberspace was paper written 20 years ago by John Perry Barlow and basically depicts how the government set laws on the internet without the consent of the
governed and Mr. Barlow believed that the internet was outside a country’s borders (United States) and therefore did not require laws.
-Believed that the Internet could solve its own problems through social contracts.
CMC Pioneer Howard Rheingold observation
Virtual communities involve creation of social groups and relationships over time
Computers “break down boundaries” and “break down hierarchies” just as they ALSO create them
Internet and social media users
Internet and social media users tend to be early adopters of an innovative technology of which consist of 5 major stages
Five Major Stages1. Awarenesss2. Interest3. Evaluation4. Trial5. Adoption
Millennial Usage
Among 18-29 year olds social media is viewed as entertainment by 70% of them. The web has turned into the TV for many people
Social media communication
represents an evolution of
individuals, social and cultural
desires to connect with new people
The Bad & Ugly of CMC
●Lack of understanding via CMC resulted in “flame wars” known as online fights
●Negative communication consequences have been related to preference of online social interaction, psychosocial depression, loneliness, and problematic internet use.
●There's a significant correlation between problematic internet use and preference for online socialization
