Examples: a word, whistle, a wall of graffiti. A flashing of red light
In US- fur coat represent a prized symbol of success but to others it represent the inhumane treatment of animals

A system of symbols that allow people to communicate with one another
Western societies write from left to right but Asian people from top to bottom
