Introdution
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) is a civil engineering marvel spanning an arc of the
Mumbai coastline. With its cable-staed to!ers soaring gracefull sk!ards" the sea link is areflection of the modern infrastructure that Mumbai is adding in its progress to!ards becoming a!orld-class cit.
The BWSL pro#ect is a part of the Western $ree!a Sea %ro#ect" !hich" in turn" is a part of a
larger proposal to upgrade the road transportation net!ork of greater Mumbai. &n the first phaseit !ill connect Bandra to Worli !hereas in the subse'uent phases the plans are to take it further
to a#i li and then to *ariman %oint. &t is a connecting bridge linking the cit of Mumbai !ith
its !estern suburbs and has the potential to bring about permanent and far reaching changes inthe travel patterns of the area.
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is primaril meant to provide an alternative to the Mahim +ause!aroute that is presentl the onl connection bet!een South Mumbai and the Western and +entral
suburbs. The pro#ect starts from the interchange at Mahim intersection" i.e. intersection of
Western ,press igh!a and S!ami ivekanand /oad at the Bandra end" and connects it to
0han bdul 1affar 0han /oad at the Worli end. The pro#ect has been commissioned to offer a'uicker alternative to the north south traffic that presentl amounts to approimatel 234"555
cars a da.
The pro#ect has been commissioned b the Maharashtra State /oad 6evelopment +orporation
Ltd (MS/6+) and the Maharashtra 1overnment and is being built b ++ (industan
+onstruction +ompan). s a builder of landmark infrastructure pro#ects around the countr"++ has handled numerous challenges both in terms of location and technolog. The BWSL
pro#ect offered ++ an opportunit to accomplish one more feat7 to construct an eight-lane
free!a over the open sea for the first time in &ndia.
Objective of the ProjectThe Bandra Worli Sea Link /oad %ro#ect (BWSL%) is a part of the Western $ree!a Sea %ro#ect"!hich" in turn" is part of a larger proposal of upgrade the road transportation net!ork of greater
Mumbai as per the report prepared b the +entral /oad /esearch Station" !hich had been
commissioned b the Maharashtra 1overnment. Maharashtra State /oad 6evelopment+orporation Ltd" (MS/6+) and the 1overnment of Maharashtra have commissioned the pro#ect.
The pro#ect is planned !ith a vie! to provide an additional corridor for the free flo! of traffic
from Bandra to Worli in the first phase and Worli to *ariman %oint in the second phase. The link is meant primaril to provide an alternative to the Mahim +ause!a route that is presentl the
onl connection bet!een the &sland-cit and the Western and +entral suburbs.
The pro#ect starts from the interchange at Mahim &ntersection" i.e. intersection of Western, press igh!a and S!ami ivekanand /oad" at the Bandra end and connects to 0han bdul
1affar 0han road at the Worli end. The pro#ect has been commissioned to divert traffic that
presentl is 2"34"555 cars a da in each direction and is epected to gro! at the rate of 345 cars

per da. The prime consultants of the pro#ect are the +onsortium of Sverdrup +ivil &nc." 1/"
Shrikhande +onsultants" T%1" and 0%M1 !ith *TB and /atan Batliboi. %roof consultants are
+onsortium of +onstruma +onsultants" Mott Mc 6onald and Schlaich Bergermann.
Financial Implications
The %ro#ect !as initiall stated to cost /s. 845 crores in 2999" and the estimate !as then raised to455 crores in 3555" and no! is estimated at /s. :24 crores. These estimates have been garnered
from ne!spaper articles over the ears" as inspite of asking for the reports concerning the pro#ect
from MS/6+6" none of them !ere made available to the panel.
ccording to a ne!spaper article in the Times of &ndia of ugust 85" 3555" the MS/6+ intends
to recover the cost of the sea link b charging a one-!a toll of up to /s. ;5sterberg cell technolog used for the first time in &ndia to check pile strength (for up to
9;55 MT).

• ,ngagement of sian ercules" one of the largest floating shear leg crane in the !orld for
shifting 2"3;5 MT launching truss from Bandra end to Worli end of the main cable sta
bridge
• Largest span for cable-staed bridge in &ndia
• Hp to 34-m high pier in open sea" giving ample headroom to marine traffic
• Hse of %oltron 6isc in bearings on piers for the first time in &ndia
Project OverviewThe entire pro#ect !as originall conceived as one large pro#ect comprising" different
components" but in order to accelerate the overall construction schedule" the pro#ect has been
divided into five construction packages
%ackage &7 +onstruction of flover over Love 1rove #unction at Worli
%ackage &&7 +onstruction of cloverleaf interchange at Mahim intersection%ackage &&&7 +onstruction of solid approach road from the Mahim intersection up to the start of
the Toll %la=a on the Bandra side and a public promenade
%ackage &7 +onstruction of +able-Staed Bridges together !ith viaduct approaches etendingfrom Worli up to the Toll %la=a at Bandra end" &ntelligent Bridge Sstem (&BS).
%ackage 7 &mprovement to 0han bdul 1affar 0han /oad
%ackage & is the largest and main phase of Bandra-Worli Sea Link %ro#ect. Main features of this
technicall challenging package are 7
• +able-Staed Bridge including viaduct approaches etending from Worli up to Toll %la=a
at andra end
• Modern Toll %la=a
