Stages of ESP Course Design: Identifying and Conducting Steps of Need Assessment

Page 2: [Group 7] Stages of ESP Course Design: Identifying and Conducting Steps of Need Assessment

1. Identify the audience and purposes for the analysis. For example: In the classroom we must analyze the problem of learning process and try to find the solutions.

2. Describe the target population and service environment. There are three levels of group, namely:a. Level 1: Target population would be students.b. Level 2: Teachers as secondary target.c. Level 3: The salaries, facilities, equipment,

curricula and support mechanism for the school personnel would be tertiary targets.

Steps Considered in Need Analysis

3. Describe the problem and find possible solutions are generated. In fact, the teachers have some possible solutions to solve the problem in classroom.

4. The next step is need assessment. For example: the teacher not only gives assessment in activities in the class but also in an after-school program like homework and extra academic activities.

5. Finally, getting the conclusion. The teacher makes the conclusion of the result.

Factors Considered in Need Analysis

1. Environmental situation information about the situation in which the course will be run.

2. Personal information about learners factors which may affect the way they learn.

3. Language information about learners what their current skills and language use are.

Factors Considered in Need Analysis

4. Learners’ lack the gap between the present situation and professional information about learners.

5. Learners’ needs from course what is wanted from the course.

6. Language learning needs effective ways of learning the skills and language determined by lacks.

Factors Considered in Need Analysis

7. Professional information about learners the tasks and activities English learners are/ will be using English for.

8. How to communicate in the target situation knowledge of how language and skills are used in the target situation.
