    The nutritional status and plasma concentrations o some !roup B "itamins, namel# "itamin B$, "itamin

    B1% and olic acid, ha"e recentl# emer!ed as in"erse correlates o cardio"ascular ris&, and se"eral

    e'perimental and clinical studies, these latter mostl# retrospecti"e and case(control studies, indicate a

    deect o such "itamins as capa)le o promotin! the pro!ression o atherosclerosis. *ince all these

    "itamins are implicated in homoc#steine meta)olism, and since homoc#steine has a +ell(reco!nied

    relationship +ith cardio"ascular ris&, the simplest h#pothesis to e'plain the relationship o "itamin B$,

    "itamin B1% and olic acid on the one hand, and cardio"ascular ris& on the other is that this relationship is

    mediated )# plasma le"els o homoc#steine. The most con"incin! literature data or the e'istence o a

    relationship +ith cardio"ascular ris& are or "itamin B$ and olic acid. These "itamins, ho+e"er, ha"e also

    a series o in "itro eects indicatin! a direct antiathero!enic action, and the results o se"eral clinical

    studies, especiall# or "itamin B$, indicate an in"erse relationship +ith cardio"ascular ris& at least in part

    independent o homoc#steinemia. A urther conirmation o these data is important to de"ise uture

    inter"ention strate!ies in primar# and secondar# proph#la'is o atherosclerotic "ascular disease.
