LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Explain why cooperative attitudes are necessary for group discussion.
Describe the major kinds of group discussions.
Discuss the factors that determine the success of group discussions.
Identify the steps of the problem-solving solving process.
Develop a list of questions you could use to direct a group discussion.
VOCABULARY Brainstorming- a process in which in group members offer
their ideas. Town hall meeting – a discussion in which a group of citizens
meets in a public place to discuss community problem to encourage creative thought and solutions.
Criteria- a set of standards that a solution must meet. Consensus- a nearly unanimous agreement among group
members about a selection. Moderator- the person in a group who leads the discussion,
gets discussion started, keeps on track, and bring it to close.

GROUP THINK- A DESIRE TO GO ALONG WITH THE GROUP EVEN AT POSSIBLE COST OF
ABANDONING ONE’S PERSONAL BELIEF
DISCUSSION- A COOPERATIVE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION, OPINION, AND IDEAS
SYMPOSIUM- TO PRESENT OPPOSING POINTS OF VIEW
FORUM- WHERE PANEL MEMBERS INVITE QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE
COHESION – AN INTANGIBLE QUALITY, WHERE MEMBERS HAVE RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER
WORKING TO GATHER MAKES SENSE We can gain much more of our identity from participating in groups
Group discussion help us learn something different about ourselves
We can define discussion as a cooperative exchange of information
We can interact with people in cooperative rather than competitive
Mainly there are 4 types of discussion, they are: round table , symposium, panel discussion, townhall meeting
Some researchers say 5 to 7 people is best for a group discussion, more than 7 is often big
The success of group discussion depend on an intangible quality called cohesion
GROUP PROBLEM SOLVING
Define the problem
Collectively solve the problem
Analyze the problem
Understand the problem
Suggest possible solution
Give the group fresh ideas
Break problem into smaller pieces for closer inspection
Set standards that meet the solution
How to contribute to a discussion
◦ Be clear about your topic, reinforce what yoou say with looks and gestures
◦ Encourage members to react to your ideas with question like “was I clear”
◦ Be interesting
◦ Offer responses for what you say, make sure to account what other people are thinking
◦ Think before you speak, but don’t take too long to think
◦ As you listen to other try to be impartial
◦ Do not confuse people with too much facts
◦ Use interpretive at the beginning of the discussion
