GRAND BAHAMA ISLANDGrand Bahama Island is the fourth largest of the 700 islands. The island has becomean island of cosmopolitan glitz and glamour, estled within miles of beaches and end-less seas. Grand Bahama Island features a number of boating facilities throughoutthe island. For fun, cruise up to the north shore and explore the cays, hidden covesand coral reef dive sites, which are only cessible by boat. Grand Bahama Island istruly an ecological wonder waiting to be discovered. There are many attractionsthat make it hard to want to end every day working on your tan. Whether to explorethe quaint fishing villages, take a nature walk or explore an underwater cave sys-tem. Here are so many sites to see, you may need to stay an extra day or weekdepending on your schedule. If you are looking for a more secluded each, Fortuneeach is the place to be where you will find beautiful seashells. We know you camefor the sun, sand and sea, but we invite you to enjoy at least part of your timeexperiencing our many local attractions and ecotours as well as numerous commer-cial offerings linked to outdoor adventures, town and country tours, churches, muse-ums and art galleries. Junkanoo parade (a bit of Mardi Gras, Mummer’s Parade andancient African tribal ritual), Goombay music and dancing, game fishing, nativedrinks and dishes, yachtsmen cruising, heritage arts and crafts, can all be found inthe islands and are symbolic of the Bahamian culture. The International Bazaar isone of the oldest shopping areas in Freeport, and it truly lives up to its name.

Upon entering the Bazaar you will notice that is has been divided into different partsof the world such as the Mideast section, French section, Oriental section,Scandinavian and the South American section. Is fast becoming a favorite year roundhome port thanks to its remarkable services, shopping, waterfront restaurants, bars, entertainment, Christmas and New Years extravaganzas, beach, charter fishing andwater sports all in one place. Port Lucaya is located in Bell Channel, which is deepand well marked. You belong here, where incredible underwater and topside adven-tures can be yours to enjoy and remember for a lifetime ! The Underwater ExplorerSociety offers unique, high quality diving, dive training and diving adventures, enabling everyone to explore the underwater world in a relaxed and comfortablesetting. Unexso has pioneered many of the dive adventures enjoyed by divers of allskill levels all over the world including shark-feeding dives and dolphin encounters.During this time Unexso maintained a leadership role in exploration.... leading divesto the Artic, Lake Baikal in Russia and an underwater navigation of the Caribbean legof Christopher Columbus course to the new world Brilliant teal waters, flour-softbeaches, and lavish tropical resorts are how the uninitiated imagine the Islands ofthe Bahamas. Nobody thinks of pine forests, huge caves brimming with stalagmites, and pigeon plum trees. Surely, such a landscape belongs to some other place,Colorado maybe. Pine trees, after all, just don’t sound tropical. At the LucayanNational 25 miles east of Freeport you’ll see thousands of them, along with man-groves, ferns, and dozens of rare flower species, including orchids. You’ll probablycome back with a whole new idea of what the islands are. The 40 acre park, estab-lished in 1982, provides an unparalleled glimpse into the Complexities of the GrandBahamian evironment, where the beaches represent only one of six distinct ecosys-tems—all of which are present in the park. The park is also home to one of theworld’s longer underwater cave system. Kayak through the costal mangroves to thissmall-inhabited island off the shore.
TRANSPORTATIONBritish rules apply, so please drive on the left and watch those roundabouts! Personsentering a roundabout (traffic circle) must give way to traffic coming from theright. Visitors may use their home license for up to three months and may also applyfor an International driver’s license. Pedestrians should remember to look rightbefore crossing the streets.
CLIMATEThe trade winds that blow almost continually throughout the islands of the Bahamas, give the islands a warm, agreeable climate, which varies little year-round. The mostrefreshing time is from September through May when the temperature averages 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The rest of the year is a bit warmer with temperaturesbetween 80-85 degrees. Rainfall is scarce from November through April each year;showers can occur during the Months of May through October.
CLOTHINGCasual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of year, but be sure tobring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December thru February. Mosthotels, restaurants nd casinos require jackets for men in the evening, especially inGrand Bahama Island. Though walking the streets in swim trunks in mid Januarymight sound irresistible, beach clothing is inappropriate on the streets, restaurantsand casinos.
CURRENCYThe legal tender is the Bahamian dollar (B$), which is equivalent in value to the U.S.dollar. Both U.S. and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout theislands.
