Group Management Assignment
Preparation
In order to prepare for the lesson I have prepared an activity, which will function
using group mini-activities as well as discussion and presentation components. I have
separated the students into groups based on behavior, ability to communicate in a group
setting, and motivation. Students will be seated accordingly ensuring proper proximity
between students who cause commotion, when sitting near each other.
Objectives/Target Behaviors
All students should, by the end of the activity, be able to connect our activity to what
they learned about in Animal Farm. Students will participate in class discussion, be
engaged in activities, and not talk while I am instructing or while one of their classmates is
speaking or sharing.
Getting Students Focused
In order to get students focused at the start of class I will give them a transition time
of two minutes to get situated and re-group themselves. Throughout the class period, in
order to gain the attention of the students I will pause to wait for complete silence. I will
positively reinforce groups for exhibiting appropriate behavior such as Thank you Tom for
staying seated with your group or Thank you pigs (group in the activity) for being quiet
while the horses are talking. If this does not work, I will verbally say to students I am
going to wait until I have everyones attention to move forward.

2/2
Within the instruction, I have embedded group management goals and rules. I have
explicitly stated, and will go over with the students, social and content goals. There is also a
rule, in the game, that if students are to speak out of turn or engage in disruptive behaviors
they will lose their privileges to receive candy during the activity.
Individual and Group Behavior Management
Evaluation of Student Progress
Positive behavior and group management techniques will be achieved if students
are engaged, participating actively in discussion, not talking out of turn, listening to their
classmates, and following directions. Engagement, above all, is the goal. Due to the nature
of the activity and the fact that it is supposed to make students aggravated and wanting to
rebel (as that is what occurs in the text) there may be instances of behavior. The behavior,
talking out of turn, challenging other students, etc., should be considered acceptable if it is
in context and aligned with the activity.
Problem Behavior Solution
Students talking out of turn First time, remind students that their
harvest (candy) will be taken. Second time,
take candy.
Students using cell phones First time, take half of harvest (candy).
Second time, write up a discipline referral.
Students getting out of their seat Take half of harvest (candy).
Students sleeping Positively reinforce students around them
for engaging in the activity and displaying
proper behavior. If this does not work,
remind student, individually, that
engagement is one of the goals. If that does
not work, take half of harvest (candy).
