Week 3: Coaching Guide (Cookout Prep)

MTL Cookout Details Our 2nd annual Mission Team Leader Cookout is this Saturday, May 7th, at the home of Ben and Linda Manis. We are starting at 11:30am and the formal activities (communion, lunch, and a short vision casting meeting) will conclude by 2:30pm. You are welcome to stay and fellowship until 4:00pm. Lunch is provided, and childcare will be provided during the meeting. If you would like to bring something, please bring a side to share.

MTL Cookout RSVP If you haven’t already, it is important that you quickly RSVP to your coach. Please let them know if you are coming and if you will be bringing any guests from your group. Future leadership prospects are always welcome at our group leadership events.

Cookout Agenda (Adopt-a-School, Summer Season, Back-to-Church Bash) Included in this week’s curriculum packet you will find the notes and schedule for the cookout we are having this Saturday. Please look at this handout carefully so that you can begin to prepare. If you are not able to attend the cookout, please ready the handout and then discuss the details with your coach ASAP. The items covered at the cookout will directly impact your team.

Summer Season / Adopt-a-School Worksheet Finally, we have also attached the worksheet that each group leader needs to submit by May 16th. This worksheet allows groups to indicate 1) their intentions for adopting a school for the 2016-2017 school year and 2) to report their plans for their summer group schedule. Please do your best to complete this guide with your group and submit it by May 16th so that we can be ready to go for the summer season. See you at the cookout this Saturday!

Cookout 12:30pm Team Meeting (Adopt-a-School, Group Summer Season, and Back-to-Church BASH) (childcare available) 1:30pm Fellowship & Recreation 3:45pm Clean Up 4:30pm Dismiss Western Hills Church hosts five weekly clubs in five different public schools in our community. These clubs focus on brining the gospel to students and connecting them with our Student Ministry. The Adopt-a-School initiative invites groups to play a part in reaching our community for Christ by strategically serving the teachers and faculty of the schools we have adopted 2-4 times per year.

Adopt-a-School Strategy:

1. Group leader adopts a school and leads their group to start praying for that school 2. 2-4 times per year, the Student Pastor will reach out to the group leader(s) that have adopted a

school to arrange service projects that are intentionally designed to serve teachers and staff. 3. The group leader will recruit members from their team to serve in the service projects (e.g. –

back-to-school bash, SFS Thanksgiving meal, carnival, teacher breakfast, etc.).

Every summer our culture changes pace. We are going to be intentional and capitalize on that pace change! This summer, groups will enjoy five group activities over a nine week period (June 19-Aug 20).

Five Group Activities: 1. Cookout 2. Cookout 3. Prayer Meeting 4. Prayer Meeting 5. Group Outing

The goal is to capitalize on the summer season by making plans that will accommodate schedules and build momentum as we approach the fall season. Each group’s summer schedule will be posted on a calendar at our Join a Group wall so that we can continue to connect guests to groups throughout the summer. Group leaders should turn in their summer season worksheet by May 16th (see handout). Correct language is important! When sharing this plan with your group, keep this language in mind…

Incorrect Language: Taking the summer off

Summer break

Winding down for the summer

Correct Language: New summer schedule

Change of pace this summer

Special summer activities for group

Our strategy for group is changing during the summer, but our mission remains. We will continue to be relational, transparent, and pray together. God’s Word is still the foundation of our community. Group leaders will continue to focus on their mission: facilitating spiritual growth among their group leaders.

The summer season will end and the fall season will begin on Sunday, August 21st. On this Sunday our church will host a Back-to-Church BASH! The BASH will transfer the energy generated during the summer season and launch us into team discipleship during the fall season.

Our goal for the BASH is to have 100% of our church membership present. Please mark your calendars and plan your vacations, get-a-ways, special events, etc. before this date! We will all come together filled up and ready to live out the Kingdom Way as a team.

Questions:

Quicker

tempo.

Heart Questions:

Slow down & wait!

Open In Prayer Welcome/Introductions Ask the group to recall the guidelines for discussion that we use to create a safe environment.

Before you get into the lesson, take a moment to complete your group planning worksheet (adopt-a-

school and summer season plans).

Ask this Hook Question: – “What do you look like when your emotions are controlling you?”

Ask someone from your team to read or tell the following background for the story:

For the background, let’s quickly review the following major points from Samson’s story…

An angel declared Samson’s birth to his mother and told her that Samson would be used of God to

deliver the Israelites from the hands of the Philistines.

Samson was born, set apart according to the Word of God through the angel. God’s Spirit was on

him from a young age.

Samson was not driven by God’s mission, but by his own appetites. It appears he was totally content

to reject God’s calling on his life and even settle down with a Philistine woman and live out his days!

God sovereignly worked through Samson by using his efforts to marry a Philistine woman to create

circumstances where Samson would fulfill God’s purpose – to deliver Israel from the Philistines.

Ask someone to retell last week’s story (Judges 14:1-20), then ask someone else to read Judges 15 and hear

“the rest of the story.” At this point the background will be complete and you will be ready for the story…

Tell the story from Judges 16:1-22 Rebuild the story – (Group members retell the story based on what they remember) Read Judges 16:1-22 – (Ask the group to read these verses)

Discuss these questions:

How do you perceive Samson’s emotions in this story? Do you think his emotions pleased God?

In what ways do you think Samson’s emotions controlled him?

In what ways do you think Delilah’s emotions controlled her?

In what ways do you think the Philistine’s emotions may have controlled them?

Did this story work out well for Samson? Where did his emotions lead him?

Who do you relate to in this story? Why?

What do you need to change so that you are under God’s control instead of your emotions? Ask for a volunteer to tell the Bible story next week. Prayer Requests (ask someone in the group to take notes so you can email the requests to the group) Pray and Dismiss
