Highland Tower Tragedy
Highland Tower
• Taman Hillview, Ulu Klang, Selangor
• Was constructed sometime between 1975 and 1978
• Consisted of three blocks 12 storey high apartments:
Block 1, 2 and 3
• Behind the 3 blocks was a steep hill with a stream
flowing west (“the East Stream”)
Highland Tower Collapsed
• Date: 1993/12/11 (Saturday)
• 48 people died
• About 1.30p.m., after 10 days of continuous
rainfall, Block 1 collapsed.
• Residents in Block 2 & 3 were being evacuated
The Main Cause of The Tragedy
• “The cause of failure was attributed to a landslide that
occurred due to pipes that burst, allowing for the barren
ground near the site to wash away.
• A pipe system was originally placed on a hill nearby the
towers to divert water from a stream that normally flowed
onto the site. Trees had also been previously cleared from
that hill for a separate housing development project, so the
soil had no protection against erosion. “
