Policy

We are committed to the creation and maintenance of buildings that conserve rather than waste energy and aspire to build them in a way that minimises their environmental impact now and for future generations. By adopting current best practice and by continually seeking to improve, we will manage our business so that it delivers long-term value to our people, our clients, our supply chain, and the communities in which we work.

Introduction 2011 has been a year in which economic uncertainty has become the norm, the market for construction evermore challenging and meeting the sustainability agenda of increasing significance. It would be easy to ‘park’ our commitment to sustainability in favour of other ‘more pressing’ needs – easy that is if we believed that meeting the social and environmental challenges of the 21st century were not equally as important as achieving other key deliverables of safety, customer service and quality. This report looks at where we are now, the progress we have made during 2011 and the structure we have put in place for the next 3 years.

The Midas ‘Green Book’, last reviewed and updated in April 2010, set a number of environmental targets against which we have made some excellent progress. Having diverted 89% of construction related waste from landfill during 2011 - substantially exceeding our 70% benchmark - we will be significantly raising our recycling targets for the next 3 years. An energy audit has been carried out across all of our operating offices providing the basis for a review early next year; company car CO2 emissions have been significantly reduced; and environmental performance has been improved through the inclusion of site specific targets within our construction phase plans.

In a highly competitive market, we believe that demonstrating continuous improvement in sustainability best practice is becoming evermore important to our customers. We will win work not only by consistently delivering industry leading performance but also by investing in our people and the communities in which we work through our local offices and by engaging local supply chains.

The ‘Green Book’ targets have succeeded in raising environmental awareness but it is now time to move on to the next stage. Our sustainability strategy has been reviewed over the last few months and a new structure put in place for 2012 -2015, underpinned by our ‘7 Steps to Sustainability’. Looking forward - The 7 Steps theme will be taken into a Group Sustainability Plan, due to be launched in 2012, which will provide the platform for introducing new and amended targets and initiatives against which our sustainability performance will be measured over the next 3 years.

7 Steps

Introduced in December 2011, these principles underpin the Group’s Sustainability Strategy and are our response to the ever growing demand for more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable buildings delivered by socially and environmentally responsible businesses. The way in which we plan, procure, construct and maintain our built environment is critical to our quality of life now and in the future and focussing on these 7 strategic areas is key to making a positive contribution to the sustainability agenda.

Each one of our seven steps:

• Carbon Reduction

• Waste Management

• Sustainable Procurement

• Respecting Natural Resources

• Community Engagement

• Training and Development

• Communication

has a potential impact on the ‘triple bottom line’ of People, Planet, Profit and will provide the structure for implementing, monitoring and reporting new and amended targets and initiatives in our Group Sustainability Plan to be launched in 2012.

Midas Academy Now in its 6th year the Academy continues to provide the basis for the development of our people and despite the economic challenges we are experiencing it has delivered a huge variety of courses throughout 2011.

‘972 training days delivered in 2011’In the year to 30 September 2011, 972 training days were delivered at an average of 2.26 days per employee, well above the industry norm.

A highly successful Investor’s in People review was carried out in January, highlighting that we had “managed to maintain our strongly people centred approach” and that “the learning and development culture is still at the heart of the business, and even now there is a heavy emphasis on providing the essential training that [our] people need”

We have adopted the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Footprint Calculator to determine our Level 1 Carbon footprint for 2010/11 and to project what it will be for this financial year – 2011/12. A number of measures will be put in place through our Group Sustainability Plan for 2012 -2015 to further understand and minimise our footprint.

Office energy supply A review of utilities has been undertaken across all 8 of the Group’s offices with the intention of aligning contracts to facilitate a switch to a Green Tariff energy supplier.

Total Vehicle Emissions

Vehicle emissions The nature of our business means that a significant part of our level 1 carbon footprint results from vehicle emissions. Our Vehicle Policy is designed to reduce this by applying a maximum manufacturer’s emission value across vehicle bands to company cars and, where a qualifying employee opts for an allowance, to personal vehicles. The latest Policy review in May 2011 reduced maximum emissions across all bands by an average of 12%.

Other measures have been put in place to help reduce travelling - all offices now have video conference facilities and the Group is currently piloting a direct to desktop web-conferencing product. The opportunity to reduce employee travel between our offices and / or sites is significant. Where possible and practicable meetings will be held using web or video conferencing and training will be provided where needed.

• Total distance travelled on business set to drop by around 1100km per driver this year when compared with 2010/11

• CO2 / Km per driver is set to reduce by around 3% this year and we anticipate further reductions as vehicles are replaced during the course of 2012

• The total vehicle CO2 emissions reduction for this financial year compared to 2010/2011 is projected to be in the order of 200 Tonnes – equivalent to the amount needed to fill 200,000 1m diameter balloons!

Waste Management We are committed to reducing waste, re-using and recycling where possible and ultimately sending zero waste to landfill.

• 2010 / 2011 site produced waste recycling target - 70%

• 2010 / 2011 actual site waste recycled – 89%

Going to the Extreme for Children’s Hospice Midas has raised over £15,000 for the new Children’s Hospice at St Austell in Cornwall through numerous fundraising initiatives.

Notable efforts included two Midas teams entering the Dartmoor Corporate Challenge at Okehampton Training Camp. Both teams exceeded expectations each winning the award for fastest mountain bike time and one winning the overall Extreme competition.

Two Midas employees Mike Rees and Steve Holt were part of a four man team who undertook the 876 mile ride from John O’Groats to Lands End, raising money for the Precious Lives Appeal for Children’s Hospice.

Everest Trek for British Heart Foundation After suffering a heart attack last year, an award-winning Midas Construction project manager, Justin Penhallurick, made the 5,364 metre climb to Everest Base Camp.

Justin’s trek raised £5,000 for the British Heart FoundationAs a thank you to his employers and main sponsor, Justin took a Midas flag with him and inscribed the name of the late Midas Director Murdo Mace in the Everest snow.

Justin said, ‘I want to thank everyone who supported me especially Midas who not only sponsored me, but generously gave me time off to complete the trek.’

Altogether Care Altogether Care, a Dorset based care provider, was delighted with an offer from Midas Retail’s Morrisons (Weymouth) team to provide building alterations for a number of their clients. Practical items such as ramps and grab rails were provided to assist older people to remain living independent in their own home. Brian Westlake, Chairman of Altogether Care said,

“We are extremely grateful to Midas for adding these important touches to the homes of our clients.”

Social Enterprise: Battery Street Hostel for the Homeless Midas’ works at the Battery Street project in Plymouth have provided numerous training and social enterprise opportunities to the local community. In support of the Shekinah Mission’s back to work scheme Midas provided trainee brick laying opportunities and facilitated a tender opportunity for the ongoing cleaning contract of the hostel.

Alongside the works we also supported the C-Group charity in their work rehabilitating injured Royal Marines returning from overseas with Andrew McNeil, being the first trainee site manager employed through this scheme.

Dress Down and Pay Up Dress Down and Pay Up days have raised in excess of £2000 for various charities, through the generosity of Midas staff paying one or two pounds for the opportunity to dress down on the last Friday of each month.

Eden Project Our Devon and Cornwall Division is supporting the Eden Project by recycling inkjet and toner cartridges, and mobile phones

Dragon Boat 2011 A team of 22 willing and able Midas employees has, for the past 2 years, gathered at Bristol Docks, in support of the Rotary Club, to participate in Dragon Boat Racing, raising £2500 in sponsorship in aid of the Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled and for a youth project in Bristol known as ‘The Station’.

Supporting the Community Midas Retail’s Waitrose and Morrisons teams have contributed some 270 hours supporting community projects for organisations whilst working on stores in Exeter and Weymouth. This has included the renovation of Newtown Community Hut to help celebrate Belmont Park’s 125 year celebrations.

The Midas Award 2011 Held at the Millennium Gallery, St Ives on Friday 11th November, this was once again a great success. This year’s winner, Alastair Barford, will receive 12 month’s supply of art materials, access to facilities at University College, Falmouth and a solo show at Newlyn Art Gallery in the Autumn of 2012

The Dragon’s Challenge 2010 The Chairman’s and Finance Director’s PA’s; Shirley-Anne Fison and Elaine Johnson, stepped up to Deborah Meaden’s Dragon’s Challenge to local businesses by organising a charity draw which raised a staggering £18,340 for the NSPCC. This first event raised more than £70,000 in total and saw Midas Group topping the list of fund-raisers, just ahead of Charles Stanley.

Campside Fireplace Reconstruction In February, 16 Scouts from the 1st Taunton (Wilton) troop, with support from Midas, undertook the reconstruction of the Fireplace at the district campsite at Huish Woods near Taunton. Under the guidance of Operations Manager, Phil Barter, a team of Midas staff gave up their weekend to teach the Scouts how to build a large brick fireplace.

Considerate Constructor The average Considerate Constructors’ score achieved across all Midas Group businesses in 2011 has exceeded 33, equivalent to 83%.

Sustainable construction

Holyoake Street, £3.75m A development consisting of 36 flats and a community space being built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 for Magna Housing Association.

Our in-house Code Assessors saw the opportunity to raise the CSH standards from Code 3 to Code 4 with minimal increase in cost. We worked alongside Boon and Brown Architects on a detailed value engineering exercise to deliver not only this increase in sustainability standards, but maximum added value for the client teams in terms of useable space, whole life costing and community engagement.

Canadian Estates, Bulford, £33m Midas has handed over the first phase of the £33m housing scheme for Bovis Lend Lease. The Bulford scheme involves the demolition of 160 PRC family housing units owned by Defence Estates, and their replacement by 260 family homes (3, 4 & 5 bed) built to Code 4 of the Code for sustainable homes.

Meeting the Code for Sustainable Homes

Urban Village The £25 million scheme is the centre piece of a five year regeneration plan of Swansea City Centre which is being driven by Coastal Housing. At present Midas is delivering over £14m of works under this scheme including 76 housing units built to CSH level 4.

The nature of the build programme has allowed Midas to partner with Coastal to deliver significant local employment benefits through a targeted recruitment and training programme as well as the involvement of local colleges and further education establishments.

The project was recently visited by the Secretary of State for Wales, Cheryl Gillan, the purpose of her visit was to see and promote companies and initiatives who are ‘bucking the trend’ of the economic downturn and to report her findings back to Parliament.

Cheryl Gillan met representatives from Midas, Mi-space, Coastal Housing Group and a small army of apprentices who have, or are due to, work on the scheme. She was so struck by the scale and ambition of the project that she asked specifically to be invited back to the ‘Grand Opening’ later this year.
