Richard Wagner and the Bayreuth Festival, Germany’s most prestigious music festival, have brought worldwide renown to the city of Bayreuth. Formerly the seat of power and city of baroque palaces and gardens, steeped in culture and his-tory, Bayreuth was Richard Wagner’s city of choice as his home and his inspiration. Even back in the mid 18th century as Margravine Wilhelmine was transforming Bayreuth into a dazzling centre of culture Wagner could feel the aura and mystique that encircled the city. Wilhelmine’s margravial opera house is today considered the most beautiful baroque theatre in Europe. Frederick the Great and Voltaire bothvisited Bayreuth and Margrave Friedrich founded one ofEurope’s fi rst freemason lodges here in Bayreuth. Built in 1760, the city’s synagogue is still an active place of worship today and enjoys the accolade of being Central Europe’soldest, active synagogue. Franz Liszt and the poet Jean Paul also left their marks here in Bayreuth. You are warmly invited to come with us and discover our Bayreuth!

Italian fl air in Upper Franconia: lovingly called the “Canale Grande” by the people of Bayreuth, the Mühlkanal in summer is a popular city-centre rendezvous.

Bayreuth 2013 – All About Wagner2013 is the bicentennial of the birth of Richard Wagner. Under the motto “All About Wagner” Bayreuth will be marking the occasion with a fi esta of events. Since it all began with the very fi rst festival in 1876, Bayreuth has been known as the epicentre of Richard Wagner’s fabulous music and “World Culture” is a very fi tting way todescribe the Bayreuth Festival. Each year in July and August thousands of opera fans the world over converge on the “Grünen Hügel” (Green Hill) to watch andlisten to Richard Wagner’s works in the very city in which they were created.

The atmosphere and the acoustics in the festival hall that was built accordingto Wagner’s own plans and opened in 1876 bestow something truly special onperformances staged there. Add to this the fact that the Bayreuth Festival Hall, modelled on theatres of antiquity, is considered one of the best opera housesin the world.

Baroque in BayreuthThe city of Bayreuth was already enjoying a fi rst fl ourish of growth back in the baroque era. Over 400 years ago the city became a margravial residential city and some 100 years later the Prussian Princess Wilhelmine, the favourite sister of Frederick the Great, became a leading infl uence on the city throughout the 18th century. In her position as Margravine she gave the city of Bayreuth numerous palaces and gardens as well as the wonderful margravial opera house that is today not only considered Europe’s most beautiful baroque theatre but has also been honoured by being pro-posed for inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Other leading places of interest that date back to the same era include the New Palace, the state art collection and the Court Garden in the historic centre of the city. The “Hermitage”, with the Old Palace, the Orangery and the Sun Temple with its grottos and water features, is a garden of prestigious European standing. Wilhelmine herself once walked the boards of the Roman theatre in the Hermitage side by side with the great philosopher Voltaire who is reported to have said: “Once poets and artists went on pilgrimages to Naples, Florence or Ferrara. Today they come to Bayreuth!” What better way could there be to characterize Bayreuth’s Golden Age?

The effi gy of Galathea is one of numerous statues rep-resenting Greek mythology and the world of myths and legends that adorn the Court Garden.

The Court Garden is an expansive baroque park immedi-ately adjacent to the New Palace.

The Good LifeHaute cuisine or down-to-earth Franconian fare – eating, drinking and epicurean delights are as much a part of Bayreuth as Richard Wagner and the festival. Yet this is nothing new, way back in the 18th century, fi ne dining, heavily infl uenced by French cuisine, was very important to both Margrave Friedrich and Margravine Wilhelmine. So, early in the 19th century, the Richard Wagner Festival and its cosmopolitan audi-ence were responsible for bringing the world’s cuisine to Bayreuth. Today, the people of Bayreuth love specialities from all fi ve continents just as much as a fi ne sausage or a roast joint with dumplings.

Good beer has been brewed in Bayreuth for centuries; city records dating back to 1623 list no fewer than 83 breweries. So, it is hardly a coincidence that the most compre-hensive brewing museum in the world is to be found in Bayreuth. The city’s interna-tional reputation as a city of beer is today due largely to the wheat beer specialities produced by the Maisel brewery. “Maisel´s Weisse“ that is now readily available all over the world from Italy and Spain to the USA and China has become a synonym of wheat beer culture.

Bayreuth joie de vivre is underscored by the fact that the city boasts three world re-cords: taking into account the number of people living here, which enables compari-sons to be made between areas of differing sizes, Bayreuth has the highest numberof bakers and cake makers, the highest number of butchers and the highest concen-tration of breweries in the world.

Fresh, light and healthy – Bayreuth cuisine offers plenty of choice.

A delicious ice cream sundae in a historic setting is easy in Bayreuth.

Franconian SwitzerlandWith flora and fauna influenced by deep valleys, idyllic rivers and impres-sive rock formations, Franconian Switzerland is a great region for walking and cycling. Explore the numerous castles and caves along the way and enjoy a cool glass of freshly pulled beer at one of the many micro-breweries en route.

FichtelgebirgeThe diversity of the Fichtelgebirge landscape makes it a great area to visit all year round. Surrounded by bizarre boulders, rock labyrinths, dark green coniferous forests and light green beech woods, peace and tranquility are guaranteed. A wide choice of cross country ski tracks and downhill pistes, many of which are floodlit, make the Fichtelgebirge a winter sports paradi-se par excellence.

Walking St. James’s WayFollow in the footsteps of many a pilgrim before you, who came from the East and the North to tread the path of St. James’s Way to Santiago de Compostela. Walk the “Via Imperii”, the old Imperial Way from Hof via Bayreuth to Nuremberg across the “Schiefe Ebene” or through the picturesque Rotmain-tal. Bayreuth’s Gothic church is one of the major pilgrimage churches along the route.

Group tours available on request. Further information:

Excursions out into the surrounding areaWe offer half-day or full-day group excursions out into the surrounding countryside. We recommend: in Franconian Switzerland the pictu-resque village of Pottenstein or the “Teufelshöhle” one of Germany’s largest flowstone caves. The Fichtelgebirge also has great places to visit such as the Gleisinger Fels mine that less than a century ago was still producing quantities of silver.

GruppenpreiseHalf-day excursion (4 hours) € 144,00 plus admission feesWhole-day excursion (8 hours) € 288,00 plus admission fees

Every additional hour will be charged at the rate of € 27,00 per hour. Transport will be in the group’s own bus. Quotes for bus transport can be arranged on request.
