Bird tests and numerical bird impact modeling
• Bird tests : recorded deformation configuration of a 1kg gelatine bird travelling at 90 knots and hitting a rigid plate (projectile and numerical model on the right);
• The pressure created when impacting on a rigid plate was also recorded to keep track of the energy transferred to the target.
Bird tests and models
• The increase in diameter of deformed bird (top figure) and deceleration of the projectile (bottom figure) of the numerical models correlated very well with the test;
• Arbritrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods were used.
APPLICATION: Bird strike simulation on wing leading edge
(arbitrary lagrangian-eulerian model)
APPLICATION: bird impact on side post and windshield (parebrise)
• Models for:• Central & Side post and Windshield • 1 kg bird model• Impact at a velocity of 150 knots. • Numerical results for sidepost, central
post and windshield deformations are shown.
(correlation with tests is excellent: not shown)

Application to sidepost impact
• Windshield sidepost of a helicopter was modelled using composite material.
• A 1 kg bird impacted it at a velocity of 150 knots. Numerical model and final deformations of the sidepost are shown.

APPLICATION: Primary bird impact and secondary debris analysis using SPH method
• A bird model was used to investigate the amount of bird debris deflected from the initial impact on the leading edge of engine pylon onto the engine casing to determine if the amount of secondary debris was damaging to the engine cowling.
