TEXT: Genesis 14
Introduction: Genuine faith produces an active concern for others.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14-17 ESV

Dig: Scripture &
Discussion
In this study, we w
ill review our study of A
braham so far. Read H
ebrews 11:6.
Why is G
od pleased when som
eone has faith? Why is faith so im
portant?
While A
braham w
as a man of great faith, G
enesis 12 reveals he did not have perfect faith. A
re you disappointed in Abraham
or do you empathize?
Paul wrote in Rom
ans 3:28, “For we hold that one is justified by faith apart
from w
orks of the law.” He then used A
braham to illustrate this tim
eless truth in the follow
ing chapter. At what point in your faith journey did you
come to appreciate this sim
ple, yet profound truth and begin to appreciate the m
any benefits of faith?
Hebrew
s 11 is a rich chapter. Each person’s incredible action is introduced by the phrase, “By faith.” Read Jam
es 2:14-17. Discuss the relationship
between faith and w
orks.
After a heartfelt, intense letter to the G
alatians, Paul ends his message w
ith telling believers how
to respond to others in trouble. Read Galatians 6:1.
Also read 1 John 4:20-21 and Jam
es 5:19-20. How
does your personal faith in G
od make you responsible for helping others?
Discuss w
hat Jesus meant w
hen he said, “Behold, I am sending you out as
sheep in the midst of w
olves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
Matthew
10:16.
Reflect: M
ake It Real
What do you appreciate about A
braham’s faith? Sarah’s faith?
Which is the m
ost amazing? W
hy?r
Abraham
believed God’s prom
ise even though it seemed im
possible.r
Abraham
obeyed God even w
hen the future was uncertain.
r A
braham w
orshipped God even though the circum
stances were im
perfect.
Moses w
as not allowed to enter the Prom
ised Land because God said he
“broke faith” (Deuteronom
y 32:51) Why did G
od express it like that instead of nam
ing the wrong action?
When a person of faith fails, are you unfazed, disappointed, or deeply
bothered? Why?
Jesus said in Luke 15:7, “There w
ill be more joy in heaven over one sinner
who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons w
ho need no repen-tance.”
It is understandable that the disciples asked of Jesus, “Lord increase our faith!” Is your faith steadily increasing or does it fluctuate? W
hen are you m
ore able to believe? When do you struggle?
James w
rote “‘Abraham believed G
od, and it was counted to him
as righteousness’ —
and he was called a friend of G
od.” (James 2:23) Jesus called
us his friends. How
often do you think of yourself as a “friend of God?”
