Grow Room 101 Framing By GanjaGeoff 

 

Welcome, this is the first installment of my upcoming grow room building tutorials. I am by no means a master grower or a master builder; however I am a very resourceful and forward thinking person. With the means to translate a skill into a tutorial with nifty 3D pictures to walk you through mind you. 

In this edition we will be talking about the initial framing of a stealth indoor hydroponic garden, complete with cloning, vegetative growth and flowering areas. In my experience this grow room setup will adapt perfectly to Ebb & Flow and Drip applications, as well as numerous other Scrog, Sog, or Aeroponic setups with a small amount of ingenuity. 

Our grow room for this installment needs to be: ‐ Display beginning elements of a stealth grow ‐ Have designated shelf space for each aspect of the plants lifecycle ‐ Have secure light mounting locations 

 

‐ Big Thanks to  ‐ Mrivers: He wrote a similar tutorial to this years ago and I guess reposted without pics so it is still able to be used today. Portions may seem similar to this tutorial given it’s what I originally based my tutorial idea around. However things will differ in that I am remodeling my personal grow room. Cannabis Culture Forums: You guys rock and given we could have all maybe done it ourselves, it’s great to have a friend you know wont snitch ☺ Big Ups for all the help you’ll lend to myself and everyone. And to my dad: Who I’m sure when he taught all that he taught me, Didn’t think I would use it to build grow rooms.  

 

 

 

 

 

We start with the corner of a bedroom. My particular example will begin in a room with a 7ft x 4ft area to lend our growing expedition. I will install here two walls, utilizing my two bedroom walls to complete the four sides of my grow room. It will house an area for flowering my plants, an area for Vegetative growth, as well as shelves for  rooting clones and storing things that I will need daily while working in my grow room. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To begin we will need to gather our supplies. 

Tools You Will Need ‐ Hammer ‐ Nails (10d 2 7/8) One 5lb box ‐ 2x4 (A good amount, We’ll calculate later) ‐ Ply board  (1/4” thick will do) Two sheets ‐ Tape Measure ‐ Saws (For 2x4 and Ply board) ‐ A Stud Finder (Will Def Help)

Lets get into the thick of it. I wont be telling you a whole lot of exact measurements as much as I will be telling you what to measure to get your lengths and an approximate measurement from my models. 

  Studs are the vertical wall supports for your house. Plates are the horizontal mounting boards for your studs. Imagine a ladder turned on its side, the steps would be your studs. 

  So, to get moving, given my grow room will be 7ft x 4ft, I need to begin somewhere, may as well be the simplest of the walls. I will need to cut one of my 8 foot boards in half, bam, well, kind of, if you have baseboard installed in this room that you don’t want to tear out or ruin, you’ll have to cut the bottom plate a bit shorter than the top and notch out the end stud against your room wall a bit as well to compensate for the baseboard still being there, which is perfectly ok. 

             

  Now your studs, we will need five for this step. Given your room Is the standard 8ft tall, you will need to cut your boards to 93”. This is 8ft/96inches minus 1.5in for the top and bottom plates.   

 

You can start your nails on your top and bottom plate while the boards are flat against the floor, this will eliminate a lot of the bounce. Next using an existing wall to brace the opposite end of the wall and nail each stud into place. Pay mind to the position of the fourth nail on the bottom brace, this will hold a flat stud and should be aligned to the inside of the wall. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Your first wall is ready to be installed. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next, Notice I have squeezed my wall into place but have not nailed it into its support rafters and stud yet. I will make my second wall first and snug into one another before securing this wall. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is the layout of our second wall. We will be using a pre‐hung door (represented by the green block) which will make it a bit easier to line up and work with. We will need four more studs, two legs for the door frame, two shorter pieces for the door header, and three even shorter pieces for bracing the door header against the top of our two 7ft wall plates.   

  Go ahead and nail a big square together with two of your studs and your wall plates, don’t forget the baseboard against this wall also. Next, Given our pre‐hung door in this example requires a Rough Opening of 22” x 82”, we will need to cut two legs for our door frame, each should be 1/8in larger than the rough opening, for me so the door will not drag or carpet or door sweep can be installed.  

  To make a door header, you sandwich a piece of ply board between two, in this case 2x4s. In many cases where structural integrity is an issue, it’s a good idea to use larger than 2x4 for this. But, we will get away fine with what we have a ton of. This creates a 3in thick bracing over your doorway, think of the hurricane drill. 

As from the illustration, you can see how the door frame and remaining studs are positioned and nailed into place. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here it is together. And ready to be hung. 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Now, we can finally place and square up our walls, then nail them together and into our existing house studs and rafters in the attic. 

 

  This completes the outside walls of our grow room. I will suggest completing the steps to follow, or at least your own shelving plan before covering the outside of this room. But, that’s simply me and not wanting to work in the dark and hot. ☺ 

 

 

 

 

  Now onto the inside of our grow room. Next we will build a 2x8ft divider wall for our areas. This is as simple as two 2ft boards, and two stud length boards. 

 

 

Leaving a 3.5ft space beyond the two foot divider wall for our flowering area, we nail it into our existing house studs and plates.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  This is what my flowering table frame looks like when it is installed. I have included two angles to better show rail and leg placement. An important thing to consider here is the height of your reservoir (which I keep under their respective tables). And the maximum overhead of the pump you will be using to water your beauties.  

 

   

  This is the top view of our flowering table. Notice each 2x4 segment is mounted flush with another segment and nailed together, This leaves us with a very sturdy tabletop that’s sure to hold plenty of weight. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  This is our Vegetative table. I have let these without setup instructions, hoping to not drive myself crazy trying to explain every measurement and cut. Get creative; no one knows your space requirements better than you do. Remember your reservoir height here too.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  Here is the framing for our cloning shelf. Pretty simple, yet remember, you’ll need a light on top of a 6in dome, on top of a 1.5in pan, so divide your space nicely. We will be adding another shelf for storage, exactly like this one and slightly below, divide this space, yet leave room under for your vegetative area. 

   

 

 

 

 

 

  This is our light hanger framing. Given in this example we have 4ft of area, and the hangers on the light are 16in apart, we will mount a 2x4 to reach 3ft from our back wall and two more, 2.25ft apart. The inward angle towards the light hood will help our light not swing off our hooks if we happen to bump it. Or some monster plant growths not knock it off its S‐hooks. ☺ 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  Here I’ve cut and placed my ply board on each of my shelves, and made a partial light barrier out of my half wall.  

 

  This is the shelf I mentioned earlier. It’s identical to our cloning shelf but I gave it a bit less room. Here is where I like to keep my nutes, cubes, testing supplies and whatever else mess I may need.
