In 2015 our YMCA became an even more vibrant force in our community for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We affirmed that by delivering on our mission – To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit mind and body for all – we will Grow A Stronger Community.

We focused on Youth Development by nurturing the potential of every child and teen who becomes involved with our Y. Through our strong collaboration with Craven County Schools we are now delivering our Afterschool Enrichment Program at eleven elementary schools in Craven County. This structured supervised program helps children learn grow and thrive in an environment that builds self-confidence and self-esteem while teaching positive character values.

As one of the influential leaders in the community promoting health and well-being, we bring families closer together, encourage healthy lifestyle activities, and foster connections through fitness, sports, and a variety of activities and events. We have influenced all ages – from infants to seniors. Weather it’s interactive play in our Child Watch area, or Healthy Eating and Physical Activity guidelines for our afterschool children, teens learning healthy competition in our Y-Bern Teen basketball league on Friday evenings, or Group Exercise classes designed specifically for our Active Older Adults, everyone can be healthy at the Y.

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors is our Social Responsibility. For more than a decade our YMCA has partnered with Craven County Schools and CarolinaEast Foundation to teach our children lifelong lifesaving skills through our Water Safety Program. Helping our children become more aware and respectful of the aquatic environment here in New Bern and building confidence in our youth by teaching them safe practices around the water and steps to take in case of a water emergency.

As we move forward into 2016 the Y will continue to work hard to address our community’s needs through programs at the Y and in our community. This would not be possible without the generous support of the H.H. Bate Foundation, CarolinaEast Health Systems, and many other groups, foundations, businesses, and individuals who support the positive impact our YMCA is making in our community through charitable contributions to our Annual Campaign. OUR IMPACTYOUTH DEVELOPMENTWe believe providing children with a safe, supportive environment in which to learn and play - surrounded by caring mentors who will encourage and guide them - puts them on the path to becoming confident, healthy and compassionate adults. From Youth Olympics to soccer to Youth in Government, the Y allows kids to explore their interests and passions in a positive place where they can belong.

Delivered critical child care to 357 participants in the Afterschool Program

Nurtured the potential of 2,912 youth and teens

through YMCA membership

Prevented summer learning loss by engaging 317 youth through the magic and adventure of summer camp programs

Encouraged physical activity, skill building and teamwork among 858 kids who participated in youth sports

Helped prevent drowning of more than 2,400 3rd and 4th grade students, by teaching how to be safe in and around the water

OUR IMPACTHEALTHY LIVINGFor more than 9,000 people in New Bern the YMCA is more than a gym. It’s a place where people can find community on their journey to better health. From the group exercise studio to the swimming pools, our welcoming wellness facilities and health-focused programs offer individuals and families from all walks of life the variety of resources and support they need to find a healthier balance in all areas of life - spirit, mind and body.

Invested $75,798 in healthy lifestyle promotion programs and services to help at-risk populations improve their overall health and well-being

Helped improve the health of 9,042 members who belonged to the Y in 2015

Improved the physical and social well-being of hundreds of participants in 81 weekly group fitness classes taught by 33 certified instructors

Taught life-saving swim lessons to 1809 youth, teens and adults

OUR IMPACTSOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYAt the TWIN RIVERS YMCA, people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds walk through our doors - a true reflection of our diverse community. It’s our belief that keeping those doors open - by providing access to all - is fundamental to our nonprofit mission and the first step toward impacting the lives of the individuals and families we serve. Responding to those critical social needs - and providing opportunities for neighbors to connect and support each other - is key to the YMCA’s past and essential it’s future.
