What Does Yarrow Stand For?

We provide

a safe & healthy environment

where there are opportunities for

all learners to pursue academic

excellence, use creative and criti-

cal thinking, be-come

self-reliant and develop positive

self-esteem.

… page 1

Yarrow Community School is a “family-friendly” learning place! As the 2019-2020 school year starts, our dedicated staff members have

prepared to welcome about 290 new and returning students to 14 divisions! We are looking forward to working with you and your family!

Strong support from our families and community makes a great school! We believe that students are at the heart of the choices and

decisions that we make on a daily basis. We strive to ensure that our students are safe, respected and happy members of our school

community. When our students feel a positive connection to their school, they are ready to learn and achieve to the best of their ability. We

sincerely appreciate and whole heartedly encourage each family’s involvement in our regular school day programs and we invite you to

join us for special events and extra-curricular activities during the year.

We believe that the school shares a responsibility with parents/guardians and community members to help your children become

responsible and productive citizens. Staff are committed to guiding students to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to

enable them to become self-reliant in our changing world. Staff work hard to provide a supportive, safe and healthy learning environment

in which the social, creative, physical, emotional and academic needs of each student are met in a variety of ways.

Encouraging excellence takes coordinated effort and commitment. Students, parents and staff can learn together and help one another

grow along the way. Cooperation and respect are important when working, learning and playing together. We will hope that our quality

school programs will help your child to develop: solid skills and a positive attitude leading to academic excellence; confidence and self-

esteem; creative thinking and problem-solving skills and self-reliance along with confidence.

Yarrow Community is a great school with many opportunities for our students and their families:

a school-wide focus on improving students’ literacy skills (Reading, Writing) and Numeracy Skills along with maintaining our school

successes related to “social responsibility”

an on-site, licensed, day care program providing before, during and afterschool care, operated by the Community School

a wide range of special events, spirit days and other activities;

student leadership opportunities,

and a dedicated Parent Advisory Council that works hard to make a difference for your children and family!

Visit our school often—family involvement encourages student excellence!

Medication at School Parents MUST complete a special form if your

child needs staff help to take any medication

(prescription or non-prescription) at school.

All approved medication should be stored, for

safety reasons, at the school Office in the

labeled/prescription bottle. Students who self-

administer an inhaler for asthma must have a

medical planning form in place.

~Public Health Nurse~

Is there a school nurse at Yarrow?

A public health nurse from the Chilliwack Public Health Unit

is assigned to our school and will come to the school if

called. The regular involvement of the health unit at school

includes student immunization and teaching that

promotes healthy lifestyles requested by teachers.

~School Emergencies~

What happens if there is an emergency at school?

Parents MUST ensure that current phone numbers are

provided to the school office. An emergency contact

must also be listed- someone the school can contact if we

cannot reach parents/guardian(s) at home/work.

In case of a serious accident (head injury) or illness

parents are contacted. If your child is ill, we prefer to

make arrangements for your child to go home. We have

a Medical Room in case isolation is needed. If a serious

injury or emergency occurs at school, we will make every

effort to contact the family. If emergency treatment for a

serious injury is needed and a parent or emergency

contact cannot be reached, the student will be

transported by ambulance to the hospital if needed (a

staff member will accompany your child.)

In the event of a fire, earthquake, bomb threat or other

school evacuation, we will leave the building and may be

directed to a nearby shelter. School District officials and

emergency personnel will be contacted to assist in

making decisions related to students’ safety.

~Head Lice~

What happens if my child has head lice?

Head lice are a problem from time to time at all schools. If head lice a r e

discovered at school, parents/guardians of the affected student are contacted by

office staff so the child can be treated. A letter is also sent home to families of

other students in the class. This letter does not contain the name of the student with

head lice.

Advice regarding prevention and treatment of head lice is available from, your

doctor, pharmacist or the office. Information is also included on the back of the

head lice notification letter. We do provide “Clear Lice” at the office upon request.

Attendance Alert

604 823-4408 Regular attendance & on

time arrival are important for

every student’s success. If your

child is absent/late, please call

the school to let us know by

8:10 am. We have “voice

mail” so you can leave a

message any time– day or

night or you can e- mail

through the web site. We’ll call

you if your child’s where about

is “unknown” at attendance

time.

NOTE: TO MAKE THIS PROGRAM

WORK, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR

CURRENT CONTACT NUMBERS

ON RECORD AT THE OFFICE.

If your child is away, a note to

your child’s teacher is

appreciated. All absences &

‘lates’ are recorded on term

report cards.

We’re “Nut Aware” We have students with severe allergies

at our school. We ask that everyone arrive

at school with hands that are washed.

We know we cannot guarantee a “nut free”

school, but we ask for your help to make our

school safer for everyone. Emergency plans

are in place

in classrooms where there are students with

severe allergies.

Thanks for your cooperation!

~Child Custody~ Please bring to our attention any specific information re-garding matters of concern dealing with child custody. The school follows Court Custody and Restriction orders if we are provided with a copy that will be placed in your child’s file.

Meaningful Parent Involvement

Our school’s Office is open

from 7:30 am– 3:00 pm

daily. We also have school

“voice mail” for your

messages (604 824-4408) so

you can call at any time

and leave a message.

All parents/guardians are

invited to attend monthly

PAC meetings (Parent

Advisory Council).

Getting involved can

increase your child(ren)’s

school success!

Our school and students

benefit from meaningful

parent involvement.

Besides keeping an ‘open

door’ for

parents/guardians of

students at our school, we

continue to look at new

ways to involve students’

families in supporting

learning.

Please contact us if you

have an idea or a question

or you wish to become a

school volunteer.

Parent Power

How can parents help out at school?

Parents are an important part of our school

community. You can get involved in school in

the following ways:

Help in your child’s classroom

Read school newsletters & other notices

Help out with class field trips

Serve snacks every other week for the BC Fruit

& Vegetable Nutritional Program

Help the PAC with school fundraisers

Attend PAC meetings and share your ideas

Take on an executive role with the PAC

Attend school concerts & other activities

Offer to help with special events at school

Take advantage of opportunities to learn how

parents can help your child to learn new skills

(such as IEP meetings or school conferences)

Become a “One-To-One Reading” volunteer

Help with preparations on PAC Lunch days

PARENT POWER = STUDENT SUCCESS!

We hope that parents will feel comfortable visiting our school. Staff invite your comments

and questions about our programs or your child’s progress. If a formal meeting is needed with

any staff member, please feel free to phone our school and set up an appointment.

~Parent Advisory Council~ The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is the official voice

of parents at our school. This group usually meets on

the third Tuesday of every month to share information

about PAC plans, learn about school programs, gather

ideas from parents and gather input about special

PAC projects. These meetings are casual, friendly and

open to ALL PARENTS. Our PAC elects an executive in

June of each year.

Become a Volunteer!

Some parents want to help out at school. Parent

volunteers are often needed! You may be asked to

help with fundraising, school or class activities, field trips

or other special events (see the list at the left). If you

plan to help students in class or on field trips, a Criminal

Record Check form must be completed every 4 years

at each site. The process is free, forms are available at

the school office. Field trip drivers must also complete

a Vehicle Declaration form.

~Agenda Books~ This book is an extremely im-

portant “LINE OF COMMUNICATION” between school and home. Each afternoon students write any homework, assign-ments, requests from teachers

and important information

~Lunch Break~

Families may also make arrangements for a child to go home to eat. Please

let your child’s teacher know which arrangement is needed. If your child does

not normally go home for lunch and you wish to change the plan, please send

a note/contact your child’s teacher and ask your child to check out and

~“In” Days~ What happens at lunch & recess if it is extremely rainy or cold outside?

Students play outdoors almost every day. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. The

children play outdoors at lunch (12:10-12:40) and each morning for a 15 minute recess break (9:50-10:05). A

hat and sunscreen are good ideas on sunny days!

In severe weather conditions (torrential rain or extremely cold weather), an ‘in day’ may be declared and

children will remain indoors during lunch or recess play times. ‘In days’ are rare—children like to play outside!

In winter weather, we ask that all children wear boots, gloves/mittens, hats/hoods and a warm winter coat.

‘Snow pants’ are optional, but, if your child is planning to slide or kneel in the snow we ask that they wear

them (a change of clothes is also a good idea). In rainy weather, your child should come to school

prepared for the weather. A hat/hood, coat, boots and umbrella are recommended.

~Supervision~ Who watches the students on the playground?

Staff members supervise students on the playground & in the

school building from 7:45 am until 2:10 pm each day. Parents are

asked to send their children to school to match these times. A

lunch time Supervisor monitors the students at lunch Eating Time .............................................. 11:55 am — 12:10 pm

Recreation Time ...................................... 12:10pm — 12:40 pm

Teaching staff supervise before school and at recess.

School-sponsored activities at lunch and after school are

supervised by staff or authorized adults (sports team

practices/games, special events, clubs, before and after-school

care Program, etc.). Please arrange your child’s school arrival

and departure to fit the scheduled supervision schedule or your

child’s special activities and events .

~Cultural, Co-Curricular & Extra-Curricular Programs~

What kind of extra-curricular and curricular programs

are offered at the school?

Extra-curricular programs have traditionally been offered at our

school. Sponsorship of these programs is offered by teaching

staff who volunteer their time during the hours before and after

school or at lunch break. Activities vary from year to year and

may include:

*team sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross coun-

try, track and field

Information about these activities is included in the school

newsletter.

~Field Trips~

Does the school offer

field trips?

Each year, curricular field

trips are organized by

teaching staff. These

trips extend learning with-

in the curriculum. In the past, field

trips have included various local

destinations and there may be a

charge to families. A ‘Field Trip Par-

ent Permission” form must be com-

pleted by a parent/guardian be-

fore a student is permitted to go on

any field trip. Parent helpers are

sometimes needed to help super-

vise a field trip. If parents would like

to volunteer, Criminal Record

Check forms must be completed at

~Library Program~

Library Hours:

Mrs. Falk is at school on Tuesday , Wednesday’s and Fridays

At Yarrow Community School, Library programs support learning in

all curriculum areas. The main goal of the Library program is to

assist students to become informed readers, writers & life-long

learners. Together, teachers and the Teacher-Librarian may plan

units of study that blend the skills students need to locate

information with those needed to prepare a presentation or

research report.

The Teacher-Librarian, works with staff to enable students, and staff

access to the school’s well-stocked library collection. Over 12,000

titles are available to suit different learning styles and recreational

reading interests. Books may be exchanged during daily Open

Book Exchange times at the classroom teacher’s discretion.

Scheduled book exchanges are in place for all primary classes.

The Library has a few computers that can allow students to search

for a book title or other information. The Library also hosts special

events such as our Spring Book Fairs and author visits.

The home reading program sheets are found in your child’s

planner. Please fill them out so that your child has a chance to win

some new reading material .

~Student Support Programs~

The classroom teacher has the main responsibility for teaching your child(ren).

Extra support is also available for students with special learning needs. Our

Learning Assistance Teachers and other school-based and district support staff

are available to help teachers to plan programs for children who have special

needs or who do not meet grade-level expectations.

The Learning Assistance Teacher is available to support students learning by

consulting with the teacher, providing materials, working with a group of

children in-class, completing a detailed assessment of the student’s abilities or

working with students individually/in a small group away from the classroom

setting. A Certified Education Assistant (EA) may also be assigned to help

specific students in some classrooms. Parents are welcome to ask questions or

seek advice from our Learning Assistance Teacher. Meetings with our LAT may

be arranged by calling the office.

Parents are also invited to contact

our School Counsellor, if your

child’s school progress is affected

by serious behaviour or emotional

concerns.

The Learning Assistance Teacher,

Principal, Resource Teacher and

School Counsellor conduct weekly

School-Based Team meetings. The

School-Based Team may schedule

meetings with a parent of a child

with special learning/behaviour

needs to share information about

progress and set goals. . This team

involves the classroom teacher

and may include other staff such

as the:

Speech & Language

Pathologist

Educational Psychologist

Certified Education Assistant

(EA)

Aboriginal Student Advocate or EA

Hearing/Vision Resource Teacher

Representatives from the Ministry for Children & Family Development or

another community agency

your child’s doctor

Parents of a student who requires extra support are very important partners in

planning a program to meet that child’s special needs. The plan is called an

“Individualized Education Plan”. Copies of the student’s IEP are circulated to all

team members.

“Homework”

Remember… homework is your

Gr. 4—5 child’s responsibility,

but, parents can contribute!

Homework for Primary students

is usually daily reading. Grade

4-65children can be required

to do homework up to 30

minutes per day. Parents of all students can help by:

reading to or with your child on a daily basis to improve their

skills (15-20 minutes a day)

making a quiet space & regular time for homework or studying

writing in your child’s school agenda to communicate with the

teacher if you are unable to drop-in to school

making sure your child is well-rested (have a regular bedtime

routine, growing children need about 10-12 hrs. of sleep)

helping your children to ‘fuel up’ for a productive school day by

providing a nutritious breakfast, healthy

lunch and snack foods (encourage them

to drink water to keep their brains

hydrated!)

School Programs

~New Curriculum~

Our curriculum is provided by the provincial Ministry of Education. Provincial

curriculum is built around Core Competencies

Communication -The communication competency encompasses the set of

abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and

ideas, to explore the world around them, and to understand and effectively

engage in the use of digital media.

Thinking - The thinking competency encompasses the knowledge, skills and

processes we associate with intellectual development. It is through their

competency as thinkers that students take subject-specific concepts and content

and transform them into a new understanding. Thinking competence includes

specific thinking skills as well as habits of mind, and metacognitive awareness.

Personal and Social - Personal and social competency is the set of abilities that

relate to students' identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their

community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses the

abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about

themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world

The school accepts major responsibility for helping students with intellectual

development, however, the steady support of the family is needed. Helping

students to achieve success in human, social and career development is a

responsibility that the school shares equally with the family. After completing

elementary school, we are confident that students who leave Yarrow will be eager

learners with a strong foundation of basic skills.

What subjects are taught in elementary school?

Teachers plan learning experiences in Primary and Intermediate

classrooms based on curriculum guidelines that are prescribed by

the Ministry of Education. Information is available online at:

http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca

The curriculum includes:

* English Language Arts * Mathematics

* Physical Education (including Dance) * Social Studies

* Health & Career Education * Science

* Fine Arts (Music, Art, Drama))

* Core French (Grades 5 only)

These subjects are taught in all public elementary schools.

Early in the school year, individual student photos will

be taken by a professional photographer from

Mountain West Photography. Photo package costs

vary slightly from year to year. Retakes, if needed, are

also taken in the fall. All photo packages are delivered

before Christmas for gift giving. Dates for ‘Student

Photo Day’ and ‘Retake Day’ are published in the

school newsletter and on your calendar.

Throughout the school year, we also take photos and

~Lost and Found~

Lost and Found items are collected and placed in the

closet by the office. Students and their families are

encouraged to look through these items and claim

them at any time.

Small items (coins, keys, small toys, eyeglasses, ....) are

kept in the Office—please ask our secretary if you

have lost a small item.

Unclaimed articles are donated to a local charity at

the beginning of each school break (Christmas. Spring,

Summer).

~School Concerts & Assemblies~

At our school, we take pride in showcasing our talented students throughout the school year. We hold monthly

assemblies on the last Friday of the month. An evening concert has traditionally been presented before Christmas

Break.

Families will also be notified about other assemblies and presentations in the school newsletter and weekly e mail

reminders

Take A Break!

~Summer Break Adventures~

It’s summertime… school is out… and many families are at their wit’s end

about how to fill two months of their children’s free time. Images of

summertime are usually cast in a light of hot, lazy, relaxing days by our lake,

but the reality for most working families is the struggle to balance adult work

schedules with providing safe activities for children. This dilemma often

results in hectic, stress-filled days comparable to those routine days during

the school year.

While summer camps are an option for some, the cost of day and overnight

camps can be too expensive for families’ budgets. Structured activities are

beneficial, but parents and caregivers should also keep in mind the

advantages of unstructured time for children.

So what do we do to keep young children busy, yet also allow them to

enjoy the summer months? Whether your child is a pre-schooler or school-

age, a wealth of opportunities for fun, educational and even relaxing

activities are possible. Here are some tips that may be useful for families and

caregivers:

Visit the library—The Chilliwack Public Library Downtown offers a great,

free summer reading program! Library cards are free and enable your

family to access thousands of books! Children and adults can

participate in activities that may include reading aloud, storytelling,

rhyme time and songs. School-aged children and preschoolers can also

enjoy puppet shows, arts & crafts activities, book discussions and

presentations by the children themselves.

Discover geography—What makes a place special? What are the

physical characteristics of our neighbourhood? Take children for a walk

around our area and look at what makes it unique. Point out how it is

similar to other places you have been & how it is different. Take along a

picnic and spend time exploring. Explore some of the great Hikes around

the Lake. Look them up on a map and plan a trip.

View and create collections—Go to a local museum to view “hands-on”

exhibits or suggest that your children start a "collection" and build their

own museum. They can collect natural materials, such as acorns and

leaves from a local park or special stones from the beach.

Nature is best—Older children can learn about weather by using a map or

the internet to look up the temperature of cities around the world and

discovering how hot each gets in the summer. Watch cloud formations

and imagine. Do the shapes look like horses, ducks or other animals? At

night, children can collect crickets in jars, or depending on their age,

camp out in a tent in the back yard. Create a treasure map for children

to find hidden treats in the yard. Read about our provincial bird (Steller’s

Jay) or flower (Dogwood), and if possible, bicycle ride to a nearby park to

find them.

Use community resources—Watch for special events, such as free outdoor

music festivals or concerts. Our community hosts concerts in local parks--

pack a picnic dinner and enjoy time with your family. People are resources

too--collectors, painters, and backyard naturalists may live in your

neighbourhood, eager to share their knowledge with your children.

Rainy day activities—Summertime can sometimes bring thunder clouds.

On days when outdoor activities are not possible, you can share family

history and photos with your children. Pull out the old videotapes or run a

slideshow of digital photos of past family gatherings and events. Prepare

an indoor picnic with your child or cook a special treat or dinner together.

Or make beautiful paintings and special drawings and display them on a

home bulletin board or visit a dollar store to buy inexpensive frames for

your family’s works of art!

Whatever the activity, children can enjoy and appreciate the summer

months in ways that are both educational and stress-reducing for all
