Growing & Shrinking task cards, reference materials, and assessments Common Core State Standards for Mathematics addressed: Numbers and Operations: Fractions Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions. Interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing), by: • Comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication. (5.NF.5a) • Explaining why multiplying a given number by a fraction greater than 1 results in a product greater than the given number (recognizing multiplication by whole numbers greater than 1 as a familiar case); explaining why multiplying a given number by a fraction less than 1 results in a product less than the given number; and relating the principle of fraction equivalence a/b = (n x a)/(n x b) to the effect of multiplying a/b by 1. (5.NF.5b) I designed these materials to help give my students a visual metaphor for thinking about multiplication as sizing and recognizing the ways that resizing can change a quantity. I chose the concept of a “sizing potion”, some of which can scale a quantity up (x 3, x 7, etc.) and cause it to “grow” and others scale a quantity down (x ! ! , x ! ! ) and cause it to “shrink”. The goal is for students to recognize that when you multiply an amount by a whole number greater than 1, the new quantity is larger than the original amount, and when you multiply an amount by a fraction less than 1, the new quantity is smaller than the original amount. The powerpoint has 20 slides and was created as an introduction to the concept of multiplication as scaling. The animations illustrate objects (in this case, dinosaurs) growing when given a potion that uses a whole number and shrinks with given a potion that uses a fraction less than one. All of the animations are timed to appear automatically, with arrows appearing on each slide when the slide needs to be advanced. A number of the slides present discussion questions that will allow your class to have a smallNgroup and/or wholeNgroup conversation about the concepts presented. After presenting the powerpoint, you can give your students one or both of the reference sheets included in this set. The first graphic reference sheet is fullNpage size and provides an overview of how multiplication can change a given number. It

The!32!task!cards!use!the!same!metaphor!of!“sizing!potions”,!making!them!the!ideal!followNup!to!the!powerpoint.!!Each!card!presents!the!students!with!a!given!potion!and!a!description!of!the!size!of!a!hypothetical!pet!(for!example,!a!snake!that!is!¾!of!a!foot!long).!!The!students!have!to!figure!out!from!the!label!on!the!potion!whether!it!is!a!growing!potion!or!a!shrinking!potion!and!identify!whether!the!animal’s!new!size!will!be!greater!than!its!original!size!or!less!than!its!original!size.!

The!students!are!not!expected!to!actually!multiply!the!numbers!to!determine!the!new!size!of!the!animal.!!In!fact,!the!standard!itself!requires!students!to!be!able!to!identify!and!explain!how!a!product!compares!to!the!size!of!factors!without!calculating!the!numbers.!!When!I!taught!this!standard!and!used!these!materials,!I!had!not!yet!taught!students!how!to!multiply!fractions.!!I!think!that!was!actually!helpful!because!lacking!a!knowledge!of!the!procedure,!the!students!couldn’t!just!multiply!the!numbers!and!compare!–!they!had!to!actually!use!reasoning.!

There!are!lots!of!ways!in!which!you!can!implement!the!task!cards.!!You!can!have!the!students!work!on!them!independently,!working!through!the!task!cards!on!their!own.!!The!students!can!work!on!them!in!pairs!or!small!groups,!completing!all!the!task!cards!in!one!session.!!You!can!use!them!in!centers,!having!the!students!complete!6N8!task!cards!a!day!over!the!course!of!the!week.!!!You!can!even!use!them!as!a!variation!of!“problem!of!the!day”,!giving!each!student!1!sheet!of!4!cards!to!glue!in!their!journals!and!solve,!one!sheet!per!day!for!eight!days.!!!

I!usually!use!the!cards!in!multiple!sessions,!with!students!typically!completing!them!in!pairs.!!I!created!two!!“task!card!holders”!by!cutting!the!ends!off!of!some!envelopes!and!taping!them!to!a!piece!of!posterboard.!!They’re!not!the!prettiest!things!in!the!world!!,!but!they!are!handy,!and!the!kids!love!going!up!to!swap!a!used!task!card!for!a!new!one.!!!Before!I!made!these,!I!would!just!line!the!task!cards!in!order!along!my!chalkboard!ledge!and!then!give!out!one!random!card!to!each!pair!of!students.!!When!done!the!card,!one!of!the!students!brings!the!card!back!up!to!the!task!card!holder!or!the!ledge,!puts!the!used!card!with!the!others!of!the!same!number,!and!then!chooses!another!card!to!complete.!!This!way,!the!students!can!work!at!their!own!pace!while!I!circulate!and!provide!guided!assistance,!or!pull!a!small!group!to!work!on!needed!skill!work.!!This!method!of!implementation!has!the!added!benefit!of!providing!opportunities!for!movement!!

Included!in!this!set!are!eight!“answer!cards”!that!can!serve!as!a!resource!if!you!use!a!selfNpaced!structure!for!implementing!the!task!cards.!!Often,!I!would!have!kids!

work!in!pairs!on!cards!while!I!circulated!to!spot!check!and!give!feedback!to!pairs!of!students.!!Naturally,!I!would!get!backed!up!and!not!be!able!to!reach!as!many!kids!until!after!they!had!already!made!many!mistakes.!!I!designed!these!answer!cards!so!that!the!students!could!check!themselves:!catching!errors,!figuring!out!for!themselves!what!they!did!wrong,!and!(hopefully)!avoiding!the!same!mistake!on!later!cards.!!!

I!set!up!the!answer!cards!so!there!is!one!answer!card!for!each!set!of!four!cards!(cards!1N4,!5N8,!9N12,!etc.).!!I!printed!out!5!or!6!of!each!card!and!laid!them!out!on!the!bookshelves!in!the!front!of!my!room!with!labels!identifying!which!card!was!which.!!I!explained!to!the!students!that!they!could!do!the!cards!in!any!order!they!wanted,!but!they!had!to!do!them!in!sets!of!4.!!Once!they!had!completed!a!set!of!4,!they!were!to!get!an!answer!card,!check!it!against!their!answers,!and!then!return!the!answer!card!to!the!pile.!!If!they!had!an!answer!that!was!incorrect,!I!asked!them!to!circle!the!card!number!(so!I!could!later!tell!how!many!errors!they!originally!made),!and!then!get!that!particular!card!back!to!try!to!figure!out!their!mistake.!

The!two!provided!assessment!activities!can!be!used!to!evaluate!student!understanding!of!multiplication!as!scaling.!!The!assessment!activities!use!a!mix!of!multipleNchoice,!openNended,!and!written!response!questions.!!These!activities!are!formatted!similarly,!and!have!similar!types!of!questions,!though!the!numbers!on!each!are!different.!!I!designed!them!this!way!so!they!could!be!easily!used!as!a!pre/post!assessment.!!However,!you!can!use!these!activity!pages!in!a!variety!of!ways!–!guided!practice,!paired!work,!homework,!center!assignments,!or!any!other!purpose!that!fits!your!teaching!style!or!classroom!routines.!

The second two activity sheets require students to explain their thinking in writing. When grading such responses, I typically use a 3-point scale to rate students on the understanding of the concept addressed by the task. Below are general descriptions of each level of the scale, followed by more specific descriptors for each of the two writing prompts that may guide you when scoring Activity Sheets A & B.

GENERAL MATH RUBRIC 3 points: answer shows full or advanced understanding of the effect of multiplying a number by a fraction, with student giving a clear and complete explanation of his or her thinking; student’s answer uses specific language (i.e., examples, numbers, vocabulary) and does not require the scorer to make any inferences about the student’s thinking

2 points: answer shows satisfactory or proficient understanding of the effect of multiplying a number by a fraction, meeting most of the criteria listed above

1 point: answer shows limited or developing understanding of the effect of multiplying a number by a fraction, meeting some of the criteria listed above

0 points: answer shows little to no understanding of the effect of multiplying a number by a fraction Activity Sheet A

For this response, students should explain that any number multiplied by ¾ will result in a number smaller than the original number. If Waggles took a potion that multiplied his weight by ¾ and ended up weighing 24 pounds, he must have weighed MORE than 24 pounds before he drank the potion.

For this response, students should explain that any number multiplied by 2/3 will result in a number smaller than the original number. If Toby took a potion that multiplied his weight by2/3 and ended up weighing 6 pounds, he must have weighed MORE than 6 pounds before he drank the potion.!
