From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;

And, beginning to sink, he cried out “Lord, save me!”

Matthew 14.30 Jesus’ response to Peter in this story is to stretch out his hand, catch Peter, and help him into the boat as the strong winds immediately die down. Jesus has that same power for us, to come to us in our time of need and lead us into the calm. No doubt there are plenty of storms raging all around us. We are tossed here and there by conflicting news reports about public health. We are battered by incessant and mean polit-ical advertisements. We have our own inner struggles. We are subject to the clamoring of many people for this cause or for that. How can we have peace in the midst of all this? A clue is given in our first reading, as Elijah takes shelter in a cave. He has been in the middle of a political and reli-gious storm. He’s exhausted and is des-perately looking for some peace from God. The Lord promises to pass by him; after fire and earthquake and wind Elijah hears a “tiny whispering sound.” It is the Lord! It is Peace! So let us find a way to enter the cave of our own hearts. We can bring all of our exhaustion and confusion to the Lord

who will pass by to bring us peace: In a few moments, or many moments

without any devices. (You have my permission to leave your phone in another room…….for hours!)

As we walk outside in these beauti-ful summer days or perhaps sit by a window and enjoy our yard.

In the greeting of a neighbor asking us how things are going.

As we sit on the porch and let the world go on its crazy way.

“Lord, help me!” we say.

Let us make sure that we are giving God a chance to lift us up

with His peace.

Desde Padre Mark Mertes:

Pero cuando vio lo fuerte que era el viento, se asustó;

Y, comenzando a hundirse, gritó "¡Señor, sálvame!"
