basics of growing roses? Great! Let’s get started with how to start
growing heart’s favorite!
Here a re some of the basic lessons to note whenthinking about growing beautiful roses in your garden.
Considering the Garden Space and Design
Landscape design planning is by far the most critical step to consider
before choosing the varieties of roses t o plant. An analogy to this would
be planning the structure and layout of your house first before putting in
some of essentials that will make it a home. This is important in the
sense that landscaping details will help you realize whether the space is
appropriate for roses o r not.
So start planning your garden design. Most of the expert gardeners set
up their roses i n a number of ways. For instance, some consider putting
up a ring “fence” of white shr ub rose s, while others prefer a climbing
rose, masked in red blooms or their favorite color and grown at the back of a catchy flower border. T here are also others who set up roses spilling
over a stone retaining wall or an enchanting arbor, with the ground
cloaked with well-shaped corals or other favorite colors and flowers. For
smaller spaces, mini versions are available to grace your patio or deck.
Keep in mind that roses need at least 4- 6 hours of sun…(preferably from
the morning…and especially in warmer, sun-intense areas..). Design so
that you have easy access to water for your gorgeous garden companions,
and assure them of good drainage.
There are other ideas that you can incorporate with your garden design

that will make your rose garden as attractive and bloom-bountiful as it
should be. No matter what strategy you may incorporate, roses f it in well
with most any landscape. Yes, when it comes to landscapi ng, th ere is
always r oom for roses ! And the value of your home can well be enhanced with the beauty and enchantment they provide!
Knowing Your Climate
The climate is another important factor to consider when thinking about
planting and growin g roses . It plays an important role in the growth of
the plants - - and all gardeners, amateur and expert alike, should
consider it before selecting or planting any specimens.
For instance, it is deemed best to plant r oses w hen temperatures are cool
and the plants are dormant. This is no doubt ideal if you have a climate
with a winter temperature that stays above ten degrees Fahrenheit. On
the other hand, if you live in an area w here t emperatures tend to hit zero,
roses g row well when planted no later than the first day of October. Inthis kind of climate, experts also often recommen d planting roses early in
spring, right after the chance of frost has passed. This time can be
perfect for planting you r roses , simply for the reason that during this
period, the ground is likely warmed and thawed.
If you want to make sure that you are planting roses in the right climate
conditions, check the package information for any hint, or ask the
experts growers you know about the right time for your roses to be
planted in your area.

Befriend Your Soil
In terms of soil , expert gardeners often sugges t planting rose s in areas
w here annuals, perennials and grasses grew. These plants indicate thatnutrients needed for t he ros es to grow and bloom exis t in t he soil.
However, if you want to obtain better results, it would be best if you will
consider adding some sort of nutritional a mendments to yo ur so il.
According to some gardeners, fertilizers will work best if worked into the
soil b eneath the roots before planting the ro ses. However, others
recommend that no additional fertilizer be used with newly planted roses
for the first year. If you properly amend the condition of your soil b efore
planting, no further fertilizer will likely be needed at planting time. You
can add some well-cured compost or organic matter to further make
the soil m ore ideal for the r oses to grow. Sheep’s manure, peat moss and
compost a re said to be potent for that purpose. Well-prepared soil with
proper drainage and nutrients are vital to success with your wonderful
Rose companions. Take the time to do it correctly!
Good soil will give your Rose s the basic foundation they need for ahealthy, long lasting life, provide for more beautiful blooms, and help
keep disease and pests at bay! It is their support mechanism and food
supply conduit rolled into one…and vitally important to their health!
To amend the garde n soil f or your wonderful roses, spread fertilizers on
the ground. A rate of about four pounds per one hundred feet is said to
be ideal . If you are clueless as to what kinds of fertilizers to use for your
roses, don’t hesitate to ask your garden center or local nursery. T here
are garden centers that distribute fertilizers for households to use
throughout the year. Catalogues are also helpful resources. It is worth
noting that roses tend to live and flourish longer i n soil rich in nitrogen,

them are fragrant, and they come in large sizes, making them perfect for
bouquets and centerpieces. They have an exquisite shape beloved around
the world.
However, in terms of their survival requirements, ask the person who
introduced you to the flowers in the garden center. You might be told
that hybrid tea roses t end to grow best in a climate without frigid winter
temperatures, unless the roots and base of the bush are warmly cloaked
with straw and/or mulch during the cold season. Als o, there ’s a great
possibility that the staff in the flower garden will advise you to deadhead
the blooms, which will in turn allow them to grow and bloom so
beautifully. These roses c an be a bit more “sensitive” than other types of
roses, and not usually recommended for beginners. But so many new
and improved varieties of roses are produced every year, that many find
perfect varieties in this class as well to nurture as their favorite garden
companions the world over!
Miniature Roses
Just like the rest of the rose types, miniature roses come in a variety of
colors, making them capable of complimenting every garden theme.
However, the miniature roses g row only to a height of about six or seven
inches. Blooms of about an inch grow plentifully, making this type truly
attractive to behold. You can plant this variety in rock gardens, borders,
or as wall edgings, as they tend to thrive best in these places. Again,
these can be ideal for small spaces, decks and patios.

Floribundas are another well-known type of rose that is easy to grow.
This variety is widely held to be easier to care for, compared to the hybrid
teas. They also tend to produce large blooms, especially from June untilthe first sign of frost . There are, however, some instances when
floribundas bloom so well -- they last even until the severe frost hits.
With their large blooms, most gardeners consider the floribundas perfect
for mass plantings, as well as for landscaping. They are ideal for these
settings, as they are not only just beautiful, but also fragrant. Aside
from that, they survive in temperatures as low as twenty degrees
Fahrenheit. So, if you find the temperature in your area dipping below
twenty degrees, it would be best to cover the base and the area around
your rose buds with a blanket of straw or mulch. This will protect its
roots and canes, allowing them to grow again in the spring, despite the
climate.
Hybrid Perpetuals
If you are wondering about the hardiest types of rose , the hybrid
perpetual is a winner. The perpetuals are so hearty in nature that they
usually thrive well even in areas with harsh winters. But although they
can thrive the following growing season after weathering such
conditions, it is still best to protect its roots and canes in winter months
when the wind and rain can be heavy. Flower collectors from different
areas in the world have long known and enjoyed this variety.

Polyantha Roses
Polyanth a roses are yet another hearty type of rose that thrives well intemperate climate, provided that the roots are well-protected. This
variety grows to a height of about eighteen inches, but they bloom in
large clusters, giving you a showy display. The polyanthas are often
favorites in mass plantings or borders.
This has been a short summary of what are held to be some of
the most the popular varieties of roses.
After you select which of the varieties you really intend to
grow, planting the ro ses co mes next!
How to Plant Your Roses
Planting roses is one of the most critical part of g rowing roses --
undertake it with proper care . Be sure you have amended your soi l
properly with compost and nutrients and texturizers as needed! Too
heavy or too light s oil ar e both unhappy choices for your glorious roses!
So, how to start planting? H ere a re some simple steps for you to follow:
1. Look for an area with good drainage , as the roots of roses cannot

typically stand being sodden. Roses , like all of us, dislike "wet feet".
2. Soak the rose roots in a bucket of water while preparing their
“home”.
3. Dig a hole measuring about two feet wide and two feet deep.
4. Add some compost to the soil. C omposted manure and peat moss
will do wonderfully.
5. If necessary , add some forms of fertilizer , like bone meal. Mix it
up with th e soil and fill the hole with water. Additional chemical
fertilizers the first year, however, are not recommended at planting
time by some rosarians--if you have properly prepared the soil in
advance.
6. Once the hole has drained away, plant the grafted rose. Keep the
bud union at the surface. It is best to make a mound below at the
proper height to support and spread the roots around.
7. If you are living in a country with very cold winters , position the
bush union down about two inches below the surface of the soil.
8. Hill up the soil around the base of the rose bush. This is necessary
to prevent any sign of drying out, which will possibly happen if the
weather gets cold, windy, or very hot. You can remove this covering
as soon as roots find their own way into the soil. ( but leave them
intact for the winter if planting in the dormant season)
1. To maintain the growth, water the rose regularly . Give your
newly planted roses some TLC. Water them regularly, a s roses need

about as much water as we do!
Other Helpful Tips
There are a lot more steps you can take to make you r roses grow as lively
and bloom-bountiful as possible. One of the necessary tasks to keep
your roses healthy and looking great is to prune them in the right way
and in the right time.
According to experts, pruning in winter is not a good idea. The right
time to prune rose bushes is in spring when new growth appears. Just
prune off old flowers when they fade, including those dead branches.
During the growing season, it is wise to fertilize the rose bushes twice.
It‘s important to feed your roses a t the“right time”, which would be in the
spring, soon after the first growth appears for the first fertilizer and inmid-season for the second fertilizer. And, never fertilize the roses i n the
fall, especially if you are living in an area wher e four-season climate is
available. Roses start to slow down in anticipation of their winter
snooze...and should not be "fed"! “Overindulgence” is not good for roses
either!
Speaking of fall, it is also best recommended for every rose grower toalways protect the roots of the rosebushes in the fall, perhaps with one
foot of straw or 6 inches or so of comp ost placed on the base of the
bushes. Provide this warm “blanket” after the first solid frost.
