The museum had moved to West St. Louis County, Missouri, during that time. The AKC decided it was time to bring the collection back to a larger audience. New York City is home to more than 100 museums, and AKC wanted its to be the only one dedicated to dogs. “This museum is a beautiful ode to man’s best friend and we are thrilled to bring these pieces and exhibitions to new audiences,” says Alan Fausel, executive director of AKC Museum of the Dog. The museum has several hundred paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, sculptures, bronzes, porcelain figurines, decorative arts objects and interactive displays depicting dogs throughout the ages. Famous artists such as Edwin Landseer, Maud Earl and Arthur Wardle will have their works on display. The first exhibition appropriately will be called “For the Love of All Things Dog.” Spanning two floors with a double-height atrium space at the stairs, the museum has a two-story glass display case with rare porcelain and bronze figures of dogs. There is also a library where visitors can learn about their favorite breeds. The museum mixes digital elements into the exhibits. The gallery includes interactive exhibits such as a “Find Your Match” kiosk that takes a visitor’s photo and determines which AKC-registered dog breed he or she looks like. There is a “Meet the Breeds” touchscreen table that lets visitors explore breeds’ features, traits and history. For the kids, there is an app that lets them interact with “Arty,” a virtual dog/tour guide. The board has chosen to cancel this month’s meetings. After learning that 3, possibly 4, officers will not be present, not having a program and knowing that several members will be showing at Westminster and may not

make the meetings, we feel it is wisest to cancel the meetings. We will be back on schedule for everything in March. The Board held a show committee meeting on

Monday, January 28th. We are very pleased to announce that George Falkner will be 2019’s show chairman. The entire Board of Directors

will be his Assistant Show Chairman. We are working very, very hard to ensure this year’s shows are spectacular. Highest on our priority list is to guarantee the Premium List goes out no later than early August and that it is MAILED to exhibitors. If you have thoughts about special attractions or anything we can do to make these shows extra special, please reach out to a Board member and let us know. Westminster and the AKC Meet

the Breeds (MTB) are imminent. I know we have members who will participate in one way or another over those 3 days. To all of you – ENJOY! And to those competing – HAVE FUN, GO FORTH AND CONQUER!Westminster does a great

marketing job for all dogs. Between the original conformation competition, obedience and agility they

showcase purebreds and mixed breeds alike. It’s so exciting for anyone to be part of what is arguably the most prestigious dog event in our nation. Cherished memories for years to come. AKC Meet the Breeds is a long, tiring and

exhilarating day that is SO important as outreach to the public. This venue gives the fancy a valuable platform to educate people about our passion and to introduce them to our dogs. How better to fight the stereotypes forced on us by the Animal Rights fanatics than to let people see our dogs, pet them and see that they are deeply loved members of our families and treated that way? I have run the Cardigan Welsh Corgi booth since the first NYC MTB in 2009.The event has grown in stature and popularity over the years. I always get home thoroughly exhausted, but thrilled that our volunteers spoke to so many people about not just our own breed, but about purebred dogs in general and the many activities they participate in. This is something each of us can do anywhere, anytime we are out with our dogs. Take every opportunity presented to you to talk up our dogs and our sport. We must overcome the people trying to take them away!I continue to look for interesting programs

for our meetings. What are you interested in learning? I want to find topics that are valuable for everyone in the club, but I need your input. Let me know what you want to see/hear/learn.Although the weather has been kind to us

so far this year, you never know what the remainder of the season may bring. If there is any question about a meeting being held, please confirm it before heading out the door. We will post cancellations on the website and Facebook page as early as possible and will use the call tree to notify everyone. Feel free to call my cell phone (201-665-2565) or email me ([email protected]) if you are unsure.

Minutes

Ramapo Kennel Club Membership Meeting (01/09/2019)

ProgramAn in-depth presentation on the Collie Health Foundation was made by Gerrie Oliver.

Call to OrderThe Membership meeting of Ramapo Kennel Club was held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at The American Legion Hall, 11 Oak Street, Pequannock, NJ. The meeting was called to order at 9:11pm and was presided over by President Sharon Fremer.

Approval of Minutes A motion to approve the minutes to the December 12, 2018 minutes was made by Lorraine Fennemore and was seconded by Sue Leonard.

Officers’ ReportsTreasurer Report – Ruth Henningsen stated that the checking account balance was $23,997.16 and the money market is at $24,908.28.

Other Reports • Point Show: We need volunteers to help with the Show in October. We need club members involved and we welcome their assistance and input. Please plan to help out. • AKC/NFDC: Jeffrey Ball attended the December AKC Meeting and discussed the low entry breeds 1+1=1 Rule. The AKC Dog Museum is having their opening on February 8th. The NJ Federation is working on a lobby day sometime in the future. Gerrie Oliver spoke about how Jeffrey assisted her in her hometown of Closter, NJ and getting a free microchipping day and a donation of a crate

and a micro scanner. The CART (County Animal Response Team) graduation was in December and Jeffrey stated that approximately 35 students graduated.• Sunshine: A gift basket was sent to Vivian Bregman as she had a fall.• Programs: Input is needed for programs and they must be dog related. Please contact Sharon with your suggestions. Ideas suggested were to get an attorney to come in and speak about how to take care of our dogs in the event of death; breeding contracts and possible CPR classes.• Classes: The CGC/Therapy Dog testing was recently held and two (2) students from the Advanced Beginner class obtained their therapy dog certification.

New Business • Elaine Barone stated that you should start

collecting your information now for the June Awards.

• A donation of $100 was made to NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance).

• Ruth Henningsen stated that the old RKC pop up tents have large rips in the covers and the cost to replace just the cover is the same as a brand new pop up tent.

Motions Lorraine Fennemore made a motion to look into purchasing new 12x12 pop-up tents. Gerrie Oliver seconded the motion – so moved.

AdjournmentRuth Henningsen moved that the meeting be adjourned, seconded by Sue Leonard, at 9:41pm.

CLOSTER BOARD OF HEALTH HOLDS FIRST MICROCHIP CLINIC

REMEMBERING RICK TOMITA

The Closter Board of Health held its first Microchip Clinic on Saturday, January 5th. Microchipping is a safe, easy and effective

way to protect your pet from getting lost or stolen. A tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) is inserted between your pet’s shoulder blades with a unique identification number. Using the AKC REUNITE microchip program, the unique identification number is entered into a database for the lifetime of the pet. Owners can add photos and update contact information online to provide the best security. Should they get lost or stolen, this number can be scanned by the Closter Police Department to quickly identify your pet and contact you.Dr. Michael Maida, Medical Director of the

Closter Animal Hospital, a part of the VCA network, chipped ten dogs and one cat. Jeffrey Ball, AKC Delegate and also

President of the New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs sponsored the program. Sgt. Vincent Sarubbi was there on behalf of the Closter Police Department to accept Jeffrey’s gift of a microchip scanner and a

large dog crate for emergencies. By having this equipment available the Department can save residents worry over lost pets by securing and identifying any pet with a chip and returning them safely.Submitted by Gerrie Oliver

Those of us who knew Rick will always think of him as a special friend. He was a caring and generous person. His contribution

to boxers was significant as was his

love for them. Rick and Bill Scolnik, long time partners in Jacquet Boxers, were known to the Boxer fancy throughout the world. They produced over 250 AKC champions and at least 500 known champions worldwide.

They also operated a very successful pet products business (J&B, which stood for Jacquet Boxers) in both mail order and in local shops. For many years Rick supported the boxer

entry with specialties at our RKC point shows. Rick and Bill could always be relied on to provide trophies for our classes, matches and point shows. Our catalogs often carried their ads.Ramapo KC and the dog world have lost a

valuable member and his friends have lost a caring companion. Rest well dear Rick.Submitted by Rose Radel

RKC Board member, Gerrie Oliver with newly chipped collie puppy “Cash”, Sgt. Vincent Sarubbi of the Closter Police Department with the new scanner, Arthur K. Dolson, Closter Borough Administrator and Jeffrey Ball, AKC Delegate and President of the New Jersey Federa-tion of Dog Clubs.
