Omaha Zoo Trip

All 6th-8th grade 4-H’ers are invited to participate in a five county 4-H trip to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo &

Aquarium in Omaha on April 3rd-4th! Did you know you can spend the night at the zoo? The Omaha Henry

Doorly Zoo & Aquarium offers nocturnal adventures for organized youth groups and families. Included will

be an IMAX Theater movie. Travel around the world without leaving your seat! The "IMAX" experience will

transport you to amazing places on a 61 ft. tall by 83 ft. wide screen with a 12,000 watt surround sound sys-

tem. It's the next best thing to being there! You won’t want to miss this!

Registration deadline March 16, 2020. Trip cost is $75.00. Members will need to bring a sack lunch for sup-

per Friday night on the bus, pay for souvenirs and extra snacks at the zoo. Scholarship is available.

Sheep and Goat Weigh-ins

Humboldt County sheep & meat goat weigh-in is set for Saturday, April 25h, from 9-11am. All lambs (market,

commercial, and purebred breeding) nominating for State Fair MUST have a 4-H ear tag put in and a retinal

image collected at county weigh in. All meat goats (market animal and breeding doe’s) must have a 4-H tag

(or tattoo for doe’s). Retinal images required for all State Fair meat goats, both breeding and market.

2020 Dairy Goat Share-A-Kid

The Iowa Dairy Goat Association 2020 Share-AKid contest is open with an entry deadline of Sunday, March

15. Download the application and find more information on the 4-H Dairy Goat page. This is an opportunity

to obtain a free dairy goat doe kid for someone wishing to get involved with goats.

New 4-H Volunteer Required Training Rescheduled

This training is designed for new 4-H volunteers committing to a long term experience working with 4-H

youth as club, project, Clover Kid leaders and assistants. Volunteers committing to these roles are required to

attend a regional new volunteer training within the first 12 months of being screened and approved as a 4-H

volunteer. The blended learning training is designed to give new volunteers a better working knowledge of

positive youth development, the Iowa 4-H Equation, and tools that will help them be more confident and ca-

pable in their roles working with youth. The training will be delivered in two components. The first includes

four, online training modules that help create a baseline for 4- H volunteers. It is followed by a regional, three

hour face-to-face training that will allow volunteers to apply some of their learning. Sign up for the resched-

2020 Equine Extravaganza Equine

Extravaganza provides opportunities for all youth in grades 4 through 12 to share their knowledge of the eq-

uine industry through a variety of competitions and participatory events. Select opportunities are also open

to young people in third grade. You do not need to be a member of 4-H to register. As a part of the event, a

judges clinic is also offered. This opportunity is for adults wanting to become certified or recertified to judge

at county or regional equine shows in Iowa. This is held at the Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

Animal Science Round-up

All youth in 8th-12th grades are invited to apply to attend this three day conference all about animal science,

June 30th-July 2nd . Species that you may choose from: Beef, Dairy, Horse, Meat Goat, Poultry, Sheep, and

Swine. Hands on learning from the top scientists in the country. Activities include: Dissection, ration formula-

tion, meats, reproduction, selection, careers, competitions and more. For more information and to apply go

lected for Round-Up you are still eligible to attend 2020 Youth Conference.

State 4-H Conference– Strive for Gold

Every June, almost 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speak-

ers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities.

If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this con-

ference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be hav-

ing fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn

new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover some-

thing new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delega-

tion through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show!

Please join us June 30th– July 2nd for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Con-

ference!

Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2020 Registration will open soon. You can register between now and June 1 for

the regular registration cost of $180. Humboldt County 4-H’ers scholarships are available. Between June 2

and June 10 the rate goes up to $200. All registration closes on June 10. Check out financial aid applications,

due June 15th to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. All of the registration information and links are in the right-hand

column.

State 4-H Council Announces 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign

The State Council invites 4-H’ers from across the state to “Count Your Clovers” and help provide support for 4

-H members across the state. Funds raised from this campaign provide financial aid support for young peo-

ple, helps to keeps costs low for the State 4-H Conference and supports the State Council’s efforts. Clubs

should complete the Count your Clovers pledge form and return the bottom portion to local County Exten-

sion Offices by Friday, May 15. Learn more about the 4 -H’ers for 4-H Campaign on the Iowa 4-H Foundation

webpage.

Animal Identification– May 15th

All animals to be shown at the Humboldt County Fair, Iowa State Fair, or Clay County Fair must complete the

identification process on 4-H Online before 11:59pm on May 15th( the only paper copies I will be accepting

are FFA Members and Jr Clover/Clover Kids). Breeding Beef, Breeding Sheep, Breeding Meat Goats, Market

Swine, Dairy, Dairy Goats, Horse and Pony, Dog, Bucket Bottle Animals have to be IDed by May 15th. Pets,

Cat, Rabbit, Poultry (those are due June 22nd with livestock entries, but check with other counties on due

dates if you are planning on showing in a different county. You simply login to 4HOnline and identify your ani-

mals, at http://ia.4honline.com . Here is link to the help sheet Animal ID Online

( www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders ) Don’t be afraid to reach

out for help if needed, we are always available from 8-4:30 Monday– Friday.

Market Beef, Sheep and Meat Goats have/will be entered by the county staff after the weigh-in happens.

What happens if you forget to login and id your animals in 4HOnline? You will not be able to exhibit those

animals at any county fair. There are NO EXCEPTIONS; please don’t miss this deadline.

Fair Entries… ~Due June 15th~

All fair entries are due to the Extension office by Monday, June 15th Fair entries include: Communication

(working exhibit, educational presentation, share the fun, and extemporaneous speaking), Clothing Event

(clothing selection, fashion revue, and $15 challenge), Garden Tour, and all animals (beef, sheep, swine,

horse, dairy, poultry, goats, rabbits, and pets). Paper forms are available at the Extension office. All Hum-

boldt County Fair entries have to be done on paper and turned into the Extension with payment (checks pay-

able to Humboldt County Fair).

4-H 202 Livestock Show Requirements

This publication is a required reading for anyone who plans to show livestock at any show. Review this for the

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a national multi-species quality assurance program

for youth ages 8 to 21 (4th– 12th graders) with a focus on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-

being, and character development.

YQCA will be replacing the old verification services called FSQA. YQCA certification is the new re-

quired youth quality assurance certification. If you are planning on showing any of these animals you

need to complete YQCA.

YQCA is available as an online program for youth, you can now view it on your own time.

The way to complete this training is it go to https://yqca.learngrow.io/Account/Login

agriculture/YQCA/YQCAWebBasedMemberInstructions.pdf There is a $12 fee per child to go with

this training (if you need financial assistance please contact the office) which is paid when you log in

your child. I ask that you have your training completed by June 15, 2020. Once you have completed

the training you will see a certificate on your screen, you will then have to email that certificate to

[email protected] so that I have proof you completed it.

I will be honoring those kids certificates that tested out of FSQA, please call the office to make sure

you are on that list and good to go for future fairs.
