GROWS

4-H Family

Summer is right around the corner, and before we know it we will be at the County Fair! Make

sure to mark your calendar with important dates and deadlines within this newsletter.

Fair books just came in today, I am working with leaders to get your fair book to you. One fair

book is given per-family and this comes from your club leader.

Wright County 4-H shirts are available at the Extension office, these are the green ones with the

white print. Remember all 4-H youth need to wear a 4-H shirt during judging times at fairs.

Reminder: Just because you verified an animal for fair (county or state) does NOT mean that it is

a fair entry. The entry is the second step and for county this is done on paper and a fee paid at

my office by June 9th. For the state fair entry process, that needs to be done by July 1 and

this is done online. State Fair books and entry forms will be on the web.

If you have questions please make sure to ask.

4-H’ERS FOR 4-H

4-H’ers investing in 4-H’ers. This is the essence of the 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign, sponsored

each year by the State 4-H Council. Money raised from this year’s campaign will be used to

provide financial assistance for youth attending Iowa 4-H Youth Conference and summer 4-H

camps, assist 4-H families pay 4-H program fees, and many other 4-H youth events. All clubs

meeting the state goal will receive a special campaign certificate. What your club donates will

be added to our Wright County total, and the top five counties will be recognized at the state

youth conference in June. The Teen Council has challenged all clubs to donate $6.00 per

member to the 4-H’ers for 4-H campaign. So, as a county let’s increase our donation to the 4-

H’ers for 4-H campaign. Send checks to Extension office for county credit by May 15th.

FSQA (FOOD SAFETY QUALITY ASSURANCE)

All 4-H youth with a beef, dairy, swine, sheep, rabbit, goat and poultry project MUST be Food

Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified to show at county and state fairs. If you do not have

a current FSQA certificate call Jessica ASAP. Last Test Out will be held on (must call to sign

youth up for test out time): Monday, May 8 from 3:30pm-7:30pm at the Extension office

It is the intent that all Wright County 4-H’ers/FFA be completed with their test or have at-

tended a workshop by May 15th.

MAY 15 DEADLINE—ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION

For all species of animals to be shown at County, other county, Clay County and State Fairs

must have their animals identified (ID) through 4HOnline. Animals included swine, horses, poul-

try, rabbits, dairy, pets, breeding beef & sheep, so basically anything that breathes and eats.

Market beef and sheep have or will be ID’d at weigh-in. All animal ID’s need to be entered into

4hOnline by 11:59 pm on Monday, May 15th. Families/youth need to ID animal through their

4hOnline account. If there are families/youth who need access to computer/internet can come

into the office, we will have one for you to use. Jessica also has extended office hours to help

families/youth either with questions, or want to have what they entered doubled checked by

Jessica, or if need computer/internet. Extra office hours: Friday, May 5th 9am-5pm, Monday,

May 8th 1pm-7pm, Wednesday, May 10th 9am-7pm, Thursday, May 11th 7am—2pm. Please

use this time to call with 4-HOnline ID questions or stop in for help or to use the computer/

internet. No paper copies turned in this year.

ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION 4-H/FFA

A reminder that an animal may be identified by only one youth. Animals identified as part of the 4-H pro-

ject CANNOT also be identified or exhibited as an FFA project or vice versa.

Youth however may identify separate animals in the same division. For example, a youth may ID market

lambs A, B and C in 4-H, and market lambs D, E and F in FFA, or horses A and B in 4-H and horses C

and D in FFA.

When exhibiting the youth may only exhibit under 4-H or FFA at a county/state fairs. So the youth may

show market lambs A, B, and C that have been ID under 4-H at the Wright County fair under 4-H, then

show market lambs D, E, and F that have been nominated under FFA at the State Fair under FFA.

If youth wanted to exhibit lambs under both organizations at the State Fair or even county, then the

youth would need to exhibit Market under organization and breeding under the other organization. This

would be the only way for the youth to exhibit lambs under both FFA and 4-H at the county fair. There

are some animals that the youth can only exhibit at a fair under one organization.

PINTEREST TO ORIGINAL SOURCE IN 3 EASY STEPS

1) Find item/recipe on Pinterest – “Wow, that cheeseburger casserole really looks good!”.

11

2) Clicking on the image brings up a page just for the cheeseburger casserole. Still on a Pinterest

page – but wait! Scroll the mouse over the casserole picture and a “Visit number-2-pencil.com”

icon pops up below the image. Now we’re getting somewhere that’s starting to look like an origi-

nal source. Not Pinterest, but number-2-pencil.com . (We could live with citing

number-2-pencil.com as the source, but we can do better. ) Click on either the image of the cas-

serole or on the “Visit number=2-pencil.com” icon.

12

3) Voila! A new window pops up on a page from the original website of the recipe – number-2-

pencil.com. Scrolling down even tells us that Melissa at number-2-pencil.com is the author and

there’s even a button to print the recipe for our recipe book. Now we’ve actually found the origi-

nal source.
