The American System

• A system of roads and canals that would link the nation together and make trade easier

• A National Bank to stabilize the economy

• High tariffs (taxes) on imported goods to protect American businesses

Steamboats

• Steamboats were a major form of transportation in the United States in the early 1800’s. They transported goods up and down rivers

The Erie Canal

• Factory owners wanted to get from the Atlantic to Great Lakes

• They dug a man-made river called a canal to transport goods.

The Erie Canal

• The Erie Canal is a 363 mile canal started in 1817 and finished in 1825.

• It Stretches from Hudson River in NY to Lake Erie. It was the largest canal in the world at that time

Railroads

• Railroads were developed to improve transportation across the expanding United States.

• The “Pacific Railway Acts” gave money to two railroad companies to build a railroad across the United States, called the “Transcontinental Railroad”
