Today in Oviedo

Let’s see where we are

Oviedo Oviedo is the capital city of the

Principality of Asturias.

It dates back to the early Middle Ages

(eighth century).

It is the commercial, religious,

administrative and university center of

the region.

The town of Oviedo is the second

most populated in the region with

225,391 inhabitants.

Uviéu or Uvieo, is the name given to the city in Asturias. The name in Castilian,

"Oviedo", is the official and most widespread.

There is still no clear etymological origin of Oviedo and no theory is fully

accepted:

● Celtic origin.

● Medieval Latin Urbs Vetus, meaning "old town".

● Ovis-etum suffix, meaning "place abundant in sheep”.

● Iovetano Iove adjective (meaning Jupiter, so the place could have been a

place of worship of Jupiter).

The symbols of the council of

Oviedo are the shield, which

contains the titles given to the

city around the Cross of the

Angels and stamped by a royal

crown, and flag, blue with the

shield in the center.

The CEPA of Oviedo has got its origins in 1973 although it was officially opened in 1981.Its name comes from the Fontan Square, a rectangular square named after the source or spring that filled the early fontán lagoon that was located in that area. Here you will find restaurants and cider bars where you can taste traditional dishes of Asturian cuisine.
