PTA News As always, the PTA have been busy planning the next phase of fundraising activities. The PTA bag pack at Sainsbury’s Braehead was a great success. A total of £642.40 was raised with much praise being received from the general public regarding the appearance and behaviour of the Gryffe High pupils whom attended this event, with many going the extra mile and helping take people’s shopping to their cars, etc. As always, the kids shone on the day and made their school proud! Many thanks to all those, both pupils, staff, PTA member and parents, who supported this event. The next PTA fundraising event will be a Quiz night with an Italian meal, upstairs at the River Inn on Friday 6th October. In order to help us with catering requirements, we would appreciate it if tickets are bought as soon as possible from the school office. Last year’s Quiz night was a huge success with tickets selling out. Please help us to repeat this success and get your tickets early! We are also looking for any type of chocolate donation for the popular chocolate themed tombola which we will be running at the Quiz night. Please deliver any donations to the school office – thank you! To celebrate the refurbishment of the school theatre, and as a special Thank You to all those who helped make this possible, there will be a Theatre Opening evening being held on 10th October, to coincide with the MAD show. The River Inn will be supplying catering for this event, for which we are most grateful for their continued support. Don’t forget to make a diary date for our annual Christmas Fair happening on Thursday 23 November. The date of the next PTA meeting is Monday, 30th October at 6:30pm in the Conference Room at the school. Anyone interested in joining the PTA, or just helping out as and when you can, please come along to this meeting. Alternatively, you can contact the PTA via Kevin Christie (DH) at the school, or you can visit the PTA/Parent Council website at: http://gryffehighschoolcouncil.org/events/

ROAR – Responsibility of All This month has seen another successful Gryffestyles Week (Health and Wellbeing), along with Scottish Maths Week (Numeracy) and European Day of Languages (Literacy). Our pupils have been encouraged to develop their skills in these key areas, noting any significant achievements whilst having some great experiences to add to their everyday learning. You can read about these in more detail in other areas of the newsletter. We know that physical, social, emotional and economic wellbeing have a significant impact on children and young people’s success in school and beyond school. We also know that aspects of these factors are significant barriers to learning and achievement for a large proportion of our learners. How Good Is Our School (4th Edition) Our wellbeing focus has provided opportunities for our pupils to gain a deeper understanding of the main contributing factors to their wellbeing and how to maintain a healthy mindset and lifestyle. We aim to support our pupils in developing resilience; the ability to work through problems and fears to achieve their goals. Join with us in promoting a growth mindset where effort leads to success and intelligence is not a fixed state. LEARNING DIARY LOOK OUT! S1-3: Check out the Health and Wellbeing support pages in the learning diaries for some information on the key aspects of a young person’s wellbeing including the ‘My Word Triangle’ and ‘Wellbeing Wheel’. There are also multiple pages for Numeracy, giving some Gryffe-approved methods for common mathematical processes. S4-6: There is valuable guidance on ‘Preparing for Exams’ and ‘How to Study’ (pg. 4-5) detailing the healthy and effective ways that pupils can engage with the more stressful aspects of the senior phase. Information surrounding the wide range of available support can also be found here!

HHoouussee NNeewwss

Pupils have made an excellent start to the year, achieving across many aspects of school life to gain points for their house. They have consistently gone above and beyond expectations to achieve within classes, used their knowledge across subject areas and contributed to the wider school ethos through the various committees and clubs that are available to them. Many continue this commitment out with school and are regularly nominated through our school website by coaches/parents/guardians for ‘Achievements Certificates’.

September has seen our first monthly house point count – a highly anticipated event in the house calendar. It was a very close count, with our house captains checking and re- checking the result before announcing to all pupils at their house assemblies. I am extremely pleased to report that it was Wallace house who came out on top this month, with Fleming in a close 2nd place (much to the disappointment of Mr Clark) by just over 100 points!! With all still to play for in the year ahead, who has what it takes to clinch victory and win the house cup… Do Wallace have what it takes to remain at the top? Only time will tell.

S1 Parents in Partnership Programme 2017/18

Building on the success of last year’s programme, on Monday 4th September, Gryffe launched the parental engagement initiative ‘Parents in Partnership’. The aim of the programme is to introduce a group of S1 parents to the lessons, terminology and expectations, which their young people experience everyday as part of our school.

Over the course of five weeks parents will attend a range of different subjects and brush up on their numeracy, literacy and health and wellbeing skills like they did in school (not so) long ago!

The feedback so far has been very positive with everyone in attendance commenting on the content and range of lessons within the school. Parents have experienced lessons in Art, Science, PE, English, Maths and Music to date.

Still to come are inputs in Health and Food Technology, Social Subjects and ABC.

Sharpen your pencils and do not forget your Learning Diaries!

S1 Health Day

Our annual S1 Health Day took place on Monday 18 September. Our S1 pupils enjoyed a variety of events aimed at improving knowledge and awareness of their own wellbeing. Pupils took part in 5 workshops throughout the morning. Mrs Costello looked at mental wellbeing with a focus on resilience. The HFT department focused on nutrition and physical wellbeing, with pupils having the opportunity to make fruit kebabs and smoothies. The third workshop by Mrs Davey focused on mindfulness, with pupils trying some meditation and mindfulness colouring. Miss Rowan focused on social wellbeing, raising awareness of LGBT bullying. The final workshop was a team exercise led by S6 pupils. This encouraged pupils to respect the ideas of others in the group and work together to find the solutions. At lunch time pupils spent time getting to know their S6 buddies, before learning about Sectarianism in a presentation delivered by the charity Nil By Mouth. During the final period of the day some pupils were selected to trial a POUND exercise class. This is a new drumming based workout which is currently being rolled out in Renfrewshire gyms. It is great for stress relief and a whole lot of fun. More information can be found here: http://www.renfrewshireleisure.com/pound-fitness/ The day received fantastic feedback. Smoothie making was the most popular workshop while many pupils reported enjoying EVERYTHING about the day. Thanks goes to our S6 helpers who supported staff throughout with the running of the day and even led some activities. Article - Miss H Rowan, Project Leader Health and Wellbeing

GryffeStyles Week – An Introduction The Physical Education Department, supported by our Sports Leaders organised our annual lifestyle awareness week which has been a long standing Gryffe tradition. This took place from Monday 18th September until Thursday 21st September 2017 and as in previous years, involved the whole school, associated Primary Schools, parents, invited guests and local businesses and agencies. The week consists of an organised structured programme which seeks to develop an ACTIVE and HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, where increased pupil confidence and performance promotes a positive image and success. Various events and activities ran BEFORE, DURING and AFTER school. These take place across all departments and the following is just a sample of what was happening around the school throughout the week. Article - Mr G. O’ Hare Faculty Head Health and Wellbeing

Gryffestyles week started with a Saturday Parkrun Staff and pupils across all year groups, established Gryffe’s very own 5K running club: ‘Gryffe Runners’. Parkrun organise many 5K runs every Saturday morning, across the country, including the Pollock, Greenock and Linwood Parkruns, just to name a few. Gryffe’s running club will be participating in the Linwood Parkrun, which will take place each Saturday morning at 9:30am at the On-X. New runners are welcome, however they should make sure that they register via the Parkrun website, join the Gryffe Runners club, and print off their barcode. http://www.parkrun.org.uk/linwood/ Our first Parkrun on September 16th was a great success. We would like to thank the Parkrun volunteers for our warm welcome and the support they gave us around the course. Thomas Campbell, Craig Ross and Aaron Mills were the first 3 Gryffe pupils across the finish line all coming in at under 21.39! Mhairi Reid was our first female finisher. Well done to all those who took part! We are looking forward to our next group run in November. Details will be available on the school Twitter @GryffeHighSch

Gryffestyles Week – Citizenship

For Gryffestyles Week the Citizenship Committee held ‘Beat the Goalie’ and a Fairtrade Smoothie Stall. ‘Beat the Goalie’ was a huge success with Mr Johnson as the goalie!

All year groups had lots of fun trying to score goals against the Head Teacher – BUT VERY FEW SUCCEEDING - with Bala Sport Fairtrade footballs. The Fairtrade banana-berry smoothies were a hit at Wednesday lunch, the healthy fruit drinks were sold out within minutes!

A Shout Out from SfL….. September has been a busy month! Our new SfL ambassadors are settling well into the role and due to the success of the role last year, we now have 21 ambassadors across all year groups. These ambassadors are a team of dedicated pupils who are responsible for raising awareness of the SfL department, along with organisation and facilitation of awareness week activities. From newsletter articles, school displays, assembly talks and parents’ evenings, the pupils have a busy schedule and are excited to start their new journey. The team are already in full swing with weekly meetings to discuss October’s main focus which will be ADHD. The department have also started the process of pupil check-in, lunch/homework club, literacy consultations, reading and scribing for subject assessments and delivering IVONA (text-to-speech software) training. As parents nights begin in October make sure to stop by the SfL desk and say hello to our ambassadors.

Gryffestyles Week - 3k Fun Run Finish Our annual GryffeStyles Week finished, as always, with our showpiece 3K Fun Run on Thursday 21st September. A rain soaked course at 6:30am was nervously inspected before the decision that the show must go on! By the start of the school day, the course was in perfect condition and we even had a visit from the sun before our final afternoon race. Over 600 runners participated in the races which included all year groups from Gryffe High School, all Primary 7 pupils from Bridge of Weir Primary School and Houston Primary School and even a new staff race at lunchtime! All participants paid £1 to enter the race with this, and all other sponsor money raised, being donated to Breast Cancer Now charity. As per tradition, our S6 experienced their 'first last' this session as they participated in the fun run for final time all dressed in their 'hippie' theme! Mr Johnson and Mrs Brown mixed in well with the fancy dress runners though question marks were raised as to whether they were just dressed in usual attire!? Well done to all participants. European Day of Languages S1 Assembly On Tuesday 26 September, S1 attended an assembly to celebrate European Day of Languages. This gave pupils the opportunity to understand the importance of languages in an ever increasingly globalised society. The development of skills through their learning of French and Spanish were highlighted, especially those that are highly transferable such as literacy and communication. Pupils took part in a European themed quiz and watched an entertaining video that showed the unreliability of translation web sites such as google translate!

Languages Greeting Challenge Throughout the day, teachers and pupils alike were encouraged to greet each other in a language other than English! Teachers rose to the challenge of greeting their classes in another language and shared their language skills with pupils. The eager response from pupils really showed a positive, resilient mind-set in our S1 cohort and laid the foundations for them to become responsible global citizens and successful language ambassadors-on y va!

Scottish Maths Week 2017

Monday 11th September saw the start of the first Scottish Maths Week. In Gryffe, we celebrated with a number of activities taking place throughout the week. On Monday, Graeme Eddolls from QinetiQ came into the school and spoke to Senior pupils about STEM subjects and how they directly impact within his company, which mainly develops technologies for use within the defence sector. Graeme spoke enthusiastically about how Mathematics is important for these companies, and the opportunities it has given him. On Tuesday, schools from across Renfrewshire came to Gryffe to participate in the regional heat of Enterprising Maths, a national team maths competition for S3 and S4 pupils. We finished a creditable third overall, and hopefully this will return as an annual fixture on the calendar. Wednesday saw S1 pupils make their way to the theatre for the final of our Countdown Numbers competition. Each S1 class had nominated two pupils representing their houses, and with house points at stake there was a real competitive edge to the final. After four rounds, Wallace emerged victorious, but all houses gained points. The Riverside Museum in Glasgow was the venue for a mathematical trip for a number of S2 and S3 pupils on Thursday, where they had to explore the museum looking for numerical clues to complete the trail successfully. Finally on Friday Dr Alan Walker of UWS visited the school where he spoke to S1 pupils about the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio, and how mathematically beautiful the Maths Department of Gryffe High School were! He then spoke to a group of S4 pupils about careers involving Mathematics, and in the afternoon a group of S3 pupils looked at Mathematics and The Simpsons. In addition to all of this, our S2 participated in a national Sumdog competition, taking place throughout the week. All in all, a very busy week for the Maths Department, but one which we hope will enthuse pupils about our subject and the opportunities it can allow them in their futures. FILM CLUB

The Gryffe Film Club in association with IntoFilm has now started for the 2017/18 term and membership is only growing! The club, comprised of S1-S3, meet every lunchtime on a Thursday with Mr Anderson in English to watch a selection of films covering a range of different genres. The club is currently also running throughout the Activ8 Programme. Pupils are encouraged to develop an interest in film as well as engage in conversation around the different themes, which the movies explore. Pupils have voted for a range of films so far from the classic ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ to the dark ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. All pupils are invited to bring their lunch, meet new friends and enjoy a free cinematic experience all from the comfort of the classroom.

S4 HFT pupils visit Tennent’s Training Academy

On the 14th of September the HFT Teachers arranged a trip to 'Tennent’s Training Academy' where we took part in a series of activities that strengthened skills in the Hospitality industry. These included clearing tables, carrying up to ten plates at a time and carrying trays of water pints over obstacles. We also got given an insightful tour of the Academy and kitchens. We were informed of many jobs in the Hospitality industry and some of their working hours such as working up to eighteen hours a day as a head chef and the opportunities of working alongside Gordon Ramsey and other celebrities. Overall it was a worthwhile experience, which we were thankful for, that gave us an understanding of the working world in the Hospitality industry. Article - Mya Hewitt and Ruth Stewart (S4)

Film Review of The Month "Les Choristes" is one of my favourite films, as it is touching, yet funny at various points. The film is set in a boarding school in France, called Fond de l'Etang. The main story is introduced after two former pupils meet up and remember their old music teacher, and how his presence and actions positively impact the pupils and the atmosphere of the school. Some of the cast members include Gérard Jugnot and Jean-Paul Bonnaire. Overall,, the film is perfect for the family and will leave viewers feeling very emotional and attached to the main characters.

Media Team make the news at Sky Academy The Media Team had an amazing afternoon experiencing the high level of technology at Sky Academy Skills Studio in Livingston. They worked under pressure of time to produce their very own Breaking News story about Money. As Directors, Editors, Presenters or using the Cameras, the pupils were divided into 3 teams and worked on their own set in individual studios. In only one hour, they managed to film their parts, then bring the whole piece together. It was a most enjoyable afternoon and a great insight into how television works. You can view their finished news item here – https://www.makewav.es/post/1047381/title/mediateamatskyacademy The pupils also had a tour of the Sky call centre and were given information about the different teams and their functions. They all decided that it looked like very hard work! Article - Mrs P McGeough on behalf of The Media Team

47 Pupils take in the excitement of Old Trafford

On Sunday 17 September 47 pupils embarked on an exciting trip to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United take on Everton in the Barclays Premier League. The pupils involved were spoiled for entertainment as the home side scored 4 goals, including a volley from distance and a last minute penalty. Spirits were high on the coach home after seeing Manchester United win 4-0, shopping in the megastore and enjoying a football quiz with prizes afterwards. Article - Mr J Gallacher, PE Department

Zip Slide Success for Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Greenaway

An amazing achievement for Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Greenaway on Saturday 16 September, as they successfully completed a very brave Zip Slide across the Clyde, to raise a fantastic total for Breast Cancer Care. Very well done to you both! Here is what they had to say about their venture – ‘With a band of supporters cheering us on, we were lifted 150 feet up on a platform (basket) and then the slide itself was 1000 feet from one side of the Clyde to the other, Finnieston to the Science Centre. Scariest part was stepping off the platform! So far we have raised for Breast Cancer Care over £1,200 but have more sponsorship money still to come in. We would like to thank everyone, including many staff, who have donated online & offline. All for a great cause, very close to our hearts.’ Article - Mrs L McKenzie and Mrs C Greenaway

Ironically Adam piped down in Greenock for the launch of Morton’s new tartan 3rd kit in May 2017 and little did he know that he would end up signing for them - attached is a picture of Adam with a couple of the 1st team players posing for the press (Thomas O’Ware and Ricki Lamie).

Attached is the photograph of the S6 boys from 1st Houston BB who were awarded their Queens Badge and Certificate by the Lord Provost at a Civic reception in Paisley Abbey on Monday 18 September 2017.

The boys from left to right are; Chris Willbond, Jonathan Paris, Cameron Baird, Peter Dickson, Ben Telfer and Ewan Harvie Euan Brown (S6 last year) and Ross McHarg were also awarded their Queens Badge but were unable to attend the ceremony.

Mr Colin Johnson Head Teacher

Last year’s Quiz night was a huge success with tickets selling out. Please help us to repeat this success and get your tickets early!

We are off to see The Wizard…….. Congratulations to all the pupils who put their names forward for our school show, 'The Wizard of Oz'. The show, which will be performed in the school Theatre on 20th -21st June, will comprise the efforts of over 60 pupils in the cast and crew. We will be rehearsing every Thursday after school (4pm-5pm). The rehearsal schedule will be published and distributed in the next few weeks where pupils will be able to see which Thursdays they are required to attend. More news and information - including fundraising information - will be provided in the coming weeks/months. We are looking forward to an amazing show! Article - Mrs B Carter, English Department
