INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT
To the Members of The Graduate Students' Association of the University of Alberta
We have audited the accompanying financial statements of The Graduate Students' Association of the University ofAlberta, which comprise the statement of financial position as at March 31, 2016 and the statements of operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies andother explanatory information.
Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements
Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance withCanadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as managementdetermines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditors' Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our auditin accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply withethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financialstatements are free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financialstatements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgment, including the assessment of the risks ofmaterial misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financialstatements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose ofexpressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating theappropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made bymanagement, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our auditopinion.
Opinion
In our opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of The GraduateStudents' Association of the University of Alberta as at March 31, 2016 and the results of its operations and its cashflows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.

2. SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (continued)
(g) Use of Estimates
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect thereported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at thedate of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenue and expenses during thereporting period. Significant estimates used in the preparation of the financial statements includeestimated useful life of property and equipment for purposes of calculating amortization, accruedliabilities and deferred contributions related to property and equipment. Actual results could differfrom those estimates.
(h) Financial Instruments
Measurement of Financial Instruments
Financial instruments are financial assets or financial liabilities of the Association where, in general, the Association has the right to receive cash or other financial asset from another party or theAssociation has the obligation to pay another party cash or other financial assets.

The Association subsequently measures all its financial assets and financial liabilities at amortizedcost.
Financial assets measured at amortized cost include cash, accounts receivable and restricted cash.
Financial liabilities measured at amortized cost include accounts payable and accrued liabilities andhealth and dental plan payable.
Impairment
Financial assets measured at cost are tested for impairment when there are indicators of impairment. The amount of the write-down is recognized in operations. A previously recognized impairment lossmay be reversed to the extent of the improvement, directly or by adjusting the allowance account, provided it is no greater than the amount that would have been reported at the date of the reversalhad the impairment not been recognized previously. The amount of the reversal is recognized inoperations.
