CVI Assignment- May 2016 - Martha Veto Internet search for adapted materials: I loved the Itsy Bitsy adapted by Marguerite Bilms at Perkins - Great for phase II – learning to respond to 2-D and work on concepts of up and down. If paired with my friend Christine Spratling’s 3-D adaptation where a 3-D spider goes down the gutter into a bowl of water- a great transition to 2-D. http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/strategies/adapting-itsy-bitsy-spider- book-students-cvi Some other things I liked: Diane Sheline webinar on literacy http://www.perkinselearning.org/videos/webinar/strategies-for- improving-literacy-skills-in-students-cvi Beginning books for children with CVI http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/strategies/beginning-books-children-cvi PHASE I BOOK I made this book to be “read” on the iPad using the LED Lightbox app. The cover is red foil paper outlined in red glitter glue. The rest of the pages are to be placed on the lightbox and are gel bags, translucent cellophane, or shiny beads. The book uses light, movement and single color to attract attention and can be interactive- squishing the gel bags or playing with beads. It could be tied to feeling the shape and talking about the salient features, then having quiet time to look at the shape on the lightbox.

PHASE I BOOK

I made this book to be “read” on the iPad using the LED Lightbox app. The cover is red foil paper outlined in red glitter glue. The rest of the pages are to be placed on the lightbox and are gel bags, translucent cellophane, or shiny beads. The book uses light, movement and single color to attract attention and can be interactive- squishing the gel bags or playing with beads. It could be tied to feeling

the shape and talking about the salient features, then having quiet time to look at the shape on the lightbox.

Phase II Book

When my son was almost 2, his favorite book was Freight Train. It is a simple book- probably good for a Phase III child with few changes, but for a child in Phase II, I adapted it to make the images more visually attractive- using red and yellow and reflective materials – red Mylar and Silver reflective paper on a solid black page. I think the book could be used with a child in early Phase II in this simple format, and when they are used to the book, there is a flap at the bottom of each page that can be opened to reveal the text and a picture from the real book – to help transition to the real book.

PHASE 3 BOOK

D knows his letters, but confuses them and can’t find them in a big array. Because he will only attend on an iPad, I made this book using an app called Little Story Creator. This book focuses on letter A. 3 different letter A’s are presented and salient features discussed on page 1.

The

The next 3 pages shows letter A in a word underlined, then 3 pages where he uses a crayon tool to draw a line under letter A. Dr Dr

Then he is given a picture card of one letter A and asked to find it on the next 3 pages- with increasing complexity.

Dr. Roman suggested for this book that I add a page where the words are presented cut out tightly on cardstock and highlighted in red to match to pages where they were cut out- like a puzzle
