Factors for choosing a listening text

What factors need to be considered when a teacher is choosing a listening text for a lesson? Brainstorm two examples.

• interest - will this be interesting?

• cultural accessibility - will my students understand the context?

• discourse structure - is it about the abstract or everyday?

• density - information rate and speed of delivery

• language level - is most of the vocabulary and grammar at a suitable level?

• length - is it too long or too short?

• quality of recording - is there background noise?

• number of speakers - are there too many voices?

• accent - is the accent familiar or suitable?

Features of connected speech

Assimilation

Assimilation occurs when a phoneme (sound) in one word causes a change in a sound in a neighbouring word. For example, try saying the following pairs of words:

You’ll notice that the last sound of the first word changes in each case. The /n/ sound becomes /m/, /t/ becomes /tʃ/ and /d/ becomes /b/.

• show a picture related to the material and discuss

• prediction questions or inferences from a picture or title

• matching, categorizing, brainstorming, rating, listing, ordering, ranking or sequencing

• completing a chart or table, e.g. K/W/L Chart

• fill-in-the-blanks with vocabulary words

• matching questions and responses (e.g. formulaic language, such as greetings, telephone language, etc.)

• listing/brainstorming words that apply to given categories

Homework (due Week 8)

•Create a listening lesson following the PDP framework. A lesson plan is not needed, but all your materials should be presented. Some activities can be demonstrated if this is easier than explaining. It is suggested that you create a PPT to present your lesson.

•The listening source can be YouTube, mp3, story, song, or any other source.

•The lesson can be for any level or age group.

•You will present the lesson in 2 weeks (not teach, you will show and explain).

•Presentation time is flexible (perhaps 10 minutes)

The lesson should include: •1~2 pre stage activities •2~3 during stage activities •1~2 post stage activities
