Special Spotlight on 4thGrade Design ThinkingProject: Redesigning theDanny Thomas/ALSAC®Pavilion at St. JudeChildren's ResearchHospital®For their 2019-20 design thinking project,GSL's 4th graders were tasked with using thedesign thinking process to reimagine the St.
Jude Danny Thomas/ALSAC Pavilion. On Nov. 11, they were able to present their proposals for thismuseum-type space showcasing the ALSAC and St. Jude story to a panel in the ALSAC boardroomthat included members of ALSAC as well as Haizlip Studio, the design firm undertaking the Pavilionupdate. During their quest to identify this school year's project, 4th grade teachers Jane Williams andJuan Roncal reached out to current 4th grade parent (and ALSAC Chief Marketing and ExperienceOfficer) Emily Callahan, who suggested the Pavilion as an option because it just so happened to bein process of being updated—and what better way to cull ideas from children for a children's hospitalfacility than to hear from kids themselves? Thus began a natural partnership between GSL and St.Jude that has not only included Mrs. Callahan but also 4th grade parents and St. Jude team memberAndy High, who helped with the Pavilion tours these Lukers took in October, and ALSAC InternalCommunications Manager Shannon Carter, whose article about the GSL/St. Jude collaboration waspublished on the St. Jude internal news sites and can be found by clicking here. (And in case you're
wondering what ALSAC is, it is the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children'sResearch Hospital.) While the 4th graders have completed their projects for now, ALSAC is juststarting the renovation and redesign process, and will take these ideas into consideration as theybegin the months-long process that will culminate in a proposal for the Pavilion update that will makethis space more compelling for St. Jude patients and families and the touring public, includingchildren.
