Taking Steps to Volunteer Bridging Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors are asked to help out at a fundraiser walk for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Girls will help with set up and tear down of the event, in addition to working with the kids’ corral booth, aiding children in arts, crafts, and games. All volunteers will receive a Take Steps T-shirt, and Girl Scouts will receive a participation patch. Food and drinks will be provided. Programs by RequestPrograms by Request are special GSWPA programs that can be provided to your group on a date and in a location that you choose. Choose a program from the suggested list below. We’re always open to new suggestions too!

How many girls and adults do I need to run a program?This number varies from program to program. Your number of adults must meet ratio. Please refer to Volunteer Essentials or visit gswpa.org.

I don’t have the minimum number of girls in my troop. Does that mean we can’t request a program?Not at all! Ask other troops in your area to team up with you for a program. We can also advertise your program on our website and open the program up to any girls in your area.

How much does a program cost?The cost of each program includes a deposit and a per girl and adult fee. Each program cost varies. Please refer to each program description at gswpa.org.

Why do I need to pay a deposit? What is it for?In order to begin the process of creating a customized program for you, we require a deposit. This will hold your program facilitator’s time.

Will my deposit be refunded?Yes, your deposit will be refunded once participation rosters have been submitted to GSWPA. However, your deposit will not be refunded if you cancel or do not meet the minimum number of girls.

Save the date for October 18-19 to travel to Camp Roy Weller where girls in grades 6-12 will participate in activities to increase their local and global awareness. Station partners from greater Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia will join us to provide hands-on activities to help us gain a better understanding of the world we live in.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Scholarships are available to GIRLS ONLY who:

• Are registered members of Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania (GSWPA). • Are new to GSWPA for the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) membership registration.

Scholarships may be requested at any time at least three (3) weeks prior to an event. Scholarships for the membership fee may be requested at any time.

Scholarships may be requested and awarded for each of the following, once per membership year:

• Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) membership registration fee • One council-operated event as listed on our online calendar and registration Web site, or in the fall/winter or spring/summer

issues of S’more • One council-sponsored summer Resident Camp (including CORE and Family camp and Summer Troop Camping Programs as

listed in S’more) • GSUSA destinations

Scholarships may be granted for other national or council girl opportunities and will be made available based on the availability of funds. Parents/guardians are to complete the scholarship application and include it with the membership and/or event/camp registration form. Submit them together along with the appropriate deposit and/or fee. For events/programs, the Girl Scout family will be expected to pay a minimum of 10 % of the fee. For summer camp (including resident, CORE, Family camp and Summer Troop Camping Programs as listed in S’more), the Girl Scout family will be expected to pay the registration deposit plus 10 % of the total camp fee. Indicate total annual household income and all income sources. All information provided on the application is strictly confidential.

Scholarships are awarded based both on apparent need and the availability of funds.

GSWPA will determine the grant amount based on the family income, circumstances and budgetary limitations. Scholarships will not be granted when there is an outstanding debt (i.e. NSF check, delinquent MagNut or Cookie Program monies and/or debts to any Council Shop). Scholarships are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. The parent/guardian will be notified by letter regarding the scholarship amount granted.

Be sure to reach out and thank those volunteers who make Girl Scouting a reality in your family. Here are just a few great ideas to get you started:

• Nominate someone for a Volunteer Recognition Award, including the Volunteer of Excellence and the 2013 GSWPA Volunteer of the Year.

• If you don’t already, lend support in a troop activity. • Bake a cake, dinner or make her favorite treat. • Design and present a special award or certificate. • Do a good deed or random act of kindness

for your leader or her family. • Have a picture taken of the entire troop

for your leader. • Write a letter to the editor about everything

your leader inspires in you. • Create a display about Girl Scout Leaders for

your local library. • Make a scrapbook of the troop’s activities or

individual scrapbook pages from each girl for their leader — include pictures or draw favorite memories and say why they like being a Girl Scout.

• Compose a recipe book with contributions from all the girls in their own words and pictures, and give it to her with samples.

Camp Skills TrainingsFor new or seasoned leaders:Basic Camping SkillsThis four-hour course focuses on the basics of an overall girls outdoor camping experience: understanding how to make, use and extinguish a campfire; tips on planning, preparation and clean-up for outdoor cooking; basic tool craft; and elementary knots.Basic Platform Tent & YurtThis overnight course, approximately 21 hours long, focuses on a camping experience in tents, including platform tents and yurts.Outdoor 101 Take this course online, as a self-study packet or as a classroom outdoor adult learning opportunity that focuses on age appropriate activities, outdoor progression, reservation procedures, safety hazards in the out-of-doors, and fire safety.

Adult Learning Opportunity InstructionsTraining PolicyAll volunteers will receive training for their position and will be required to complete additional trainings that are designated as mandatory for their position within a specified time frame. Training will ensure that each volunteer has the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in her/his work.Registration InstructionsRegistration is required for all council-sponsored learning opportunities.

Child CareBabysitting is not provided. Small children may be distracting to both the trainer/learning facilitator and theparticipants. Please make arrangements for the care of your children while you attend a training session. PunctualityPlease be punctual to ensure that all training sessions begin and end at the times indicated. Participants who missmore than 30 minutes of training will not receive credit for the session until the missed training information is completedthrough another training session, at which time the training card will be signed.CancellationsTraining sessions may be cancelled due to inclement weather, trainer illness or if fewer than five (5) people register by thedeadline. If a training session is cancelled, only those registered will be notified. Refund PolicyRefunds will be given when:• Participants cancel at least five (5) weeks prior to an event.• The council cancels the learning opportunity.• The participant cannot attend due to illness, and a physician’s statement accompanies a written request for a refund.• The participant cannot attend due to a family emergency and an explanation of the emergency situation

Notification for Accounts Receivable Conversion (ARC)Checks received by Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania may be converted into an electronic debit for clearing. Thecreation of an electronic debit requires Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania to destroy the original check for privacyreasons. You will not receive your check back from the bank.

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to Go Gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania congratulates the girls who completed their Girl Scout Gold Award between March 2012 and February 2013. By earning this award, these girls join the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference in their communities and developed the leadership skills that set a foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship.
