He taught Earth & Space Science, Astronomy, Environmental Science, and American History for 14 years at Donegal High School in Mount Joy and at Steelton-Highspire High School in Steelton. He then spent 8 years as a school administrator – three years as an Assistant Principal at Steelton-Highspire High School, one year as an Assistant Principal at Carlisle High School and four years as Principal at Carlisle High School. He also spent seven years as the Astronomer for Public Viewing at Grundy Observatory at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. Mr. Abele has a B.A. Degree in Geography and an M.A. Degree in Physical Sciences, both from West Chester University. EDWARD BONEKEMPER is the author of six Civil War books. Dr. Bonekemper is book review editor, Civil War News (a national publication). He is a former adjunct instructor on military history, Muhlenberg College, and he has spoken at hundreds of Civil War Roundtable meetings as well as the Smithsonian Institute. His educational background includes a B.A. in American History, Muhlenberg College; an M.A. in American History, Old Dominion University; and a J.D., Yale Law School. ANNIE CATHARINE BOSHART is a descendant of the founder of Bauman’s Apple Butter, John W. Bauman. In 1892, John and his wife Catherine transformed a carriage factory to produce apple butter. Ms. Boshart grew up in the same house next to the factory, learned the production from her grandfather, father, and mother as she worked in the factory and witnessed changes towards present day production with the present owners, Harvey and wife Kathleen Bauman. Annie is retired from having left for college in 1960, after 21 years with apple butter factory work, and then teaching and social work. DICK BOYER is a retired educator. He has a B.S. Degree and a M.Ed. Degree in Health and Physical Education (P.E.) and taught 7th and 8th grade health and P.E. in the Manheim Township School District. One of Mr. Boyer’s interests is to make a contribution to the health and wellness of others. INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHIES JOHN W. BROWN has lived most of his life in Lancaster County. He spent his childhood in Strasburg and has lived the past thirty-five years in Maytown. He grew up watching the Strasburg Railroad, and he has been active in several railroad historical societies for over 25 years. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School and Elizabethtown College. He is retired and the former owner of First Impression Graphics, a graphics business specializing in the preparation of visual aids for speakers. Mr. Brown has always had an interest in history, especially the transportation history of Lancaster County. Research of the transportation history led to a desire to learn more about the earliest settlers of Lancaster County, and his presentations are a result of that research. J. KENNETH BRUBAKER, M.D., CMD, is a family physician trained in the specialty of geriatrics. Dr. Brubaker was the Chief Medical Director of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and Office of Long-Term Living from 2010 to 2014. He serves currently as Medical Director at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. Dr. Brubaker is very interested in geriatric education and lectures frequently at local, state, and national conferences. MARY K. BUCHER, is a retired school teacher with an avocation in music, summer stock in operetta and Broadway musicals, and annual voice recitals singing light tunes as well as French, German, Spanish, and Italian song. Currently she sings with the Wheatland Chorale, an outstanding regional group; she also directs the ladies chorus at Landis Homes. RICHARD COOK is a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, Eastern Baptist Seminary and Princeton Seminary. He pastored at American Baptist churches for 38 years in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan and Ohio. Reverend Cook retired in 2009 and now works part-time at First Baptist Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He also serves on the Pathways Institute Advisory Board.

DEBORAH DOUTHART operated her own tea party hostess business after retiring from a 30-year career as an educator in Maine. Her continuing interests in “tea culture” and lifelong education led her to teach courses for Pathways Institute, focusing on the healthy benefits of tea. She now resides in Lititz with her husband Jim and is a Coordinator for Pathways at Landis Homes.

CHUCK FEW earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. At Northwestern, he studied trumpet with the world renowned Vincent Cichowicz. He has taught music in the public schools of Mount Prospect, Ill, and Wheeling, Ill, and was a Senior Instrumental Lecturer at the University of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. Mr. Few has performed as soloist and ensemble member with numerous bands and orchestras in the Chicago area, South Africa and South-Central Pennsylvania. He was a long time member of the Sounds of Brass Quintet and the Concert Band of Lancaster. His wide variety of performance venues includes Longwood Gardens, the National Cathedral, Franklin & Marshall College, Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, Millersville University, Otterbein University and Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, VA. Mr. Few retired after many years as a Certified Financial Planner.

ROBERT A. FRICK, ED.D. retired after 45 years of service to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District on June 30, 2011. During his years there, Dr. Frick served as a Teacher, Elementary Administrative Assistant, Principal, Director of Elementary Education, Assistant Superintendent, and, for the last 15 years, as Superintendent of Schools. In addition, he served two terms as Superintendent of Record for the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.

A graduate of Millersville University of Pennsylvania with both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, Dr. Frick holds a doctorate in educational administration from Temple University. He has served as adjunct professor of educational

administration for Temple, Penn State, Millersville, Shippensburg, and Immaculata Universities. He continues to teach school law and supervision classes and workshops for Pennsylvania school districts and Intermediate Units.

MARY FURLONG is a Fulbright scholar (both Malaysia and Ghana), an Eisenhower Farm National Park Service guide, and an independent history researcher with strong interest in local, national and international history. Ms. Furlong is a retired social studies educator.

MIKE GUMPPER, Ph.D. has been a member of the Economics Department at Millersville University since 1995. One of the courses he teaches regularly is Public Finance. Public Finance deals with the political economy, government spending, and taxes. In addition, Dr. Gumpper’s research interests include environmental economics, in particular land use, and the role of government in higher education.

OTIS KITCHEN is Professor of Music and Director of Bands Emeritus at Elizabethtown College, where he taught conducting, instrumental methods, and directed the concert band until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Kitchen is an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and he has held membership in numerous state, national and international music organizations.

Still an active performing musician, adjudicator and clinician, he has served as a musical director and conductor in thirty-five of the United States and twenty-five nations including the London New Year’s Day Parade and Concert festival in Royal Albert Hall. He also performed in Moscow, Beijing, Vienna, and St. Peters in Rome with Pope John Paul II in attendance. Dr. Kitchen has earned music degrees from Bridgewater College, Northwestern University, and the National Conservatory of Mexico and is a graduate of the Navy School of Music. He is listed in Marquis “Who’s Who in America.”

JOHN MAIETTA is a retired Army officer, lifelong history enthusiast, and long-time member of the Pathways Institute “faculty.” In 2014 he received a Master’s Degree in Applied History from Shippensburg University, where he subsequently taught introductory courses in the foundations of global culture. Mr. Maietta is currently an adjunct history instructor at York College of Pennsylvania. He is also a popular presenter of cultural and historical programs at libraries, retirement centers, and other community venues across the region.

PAUL A. MILLER is a graduate of Warwick High School in Lititz and attended HACC for a geography class. Mr. Miller is retired from Warwick School District since 2011 after having served there 37 years. He is now a tour guide with the Lititz Historical Foundation and a lay pastor at Lititz United Methodist Church.

A. MARTHA NISSLEY has published four books, and she leads the Life Story Writing group in the Rose Room at Landis Homes, the second Thursday of each month. She is working on writing her own life story. Mrs. Nissley has a Master’s Degree in Education and is a retired teacher.

CHUCK REYNOLDS, AB, MA and LOURENE REYNOLDS, BSN, RN, have extensive training in areas impacting the topic of “listening skills”. Both have been trained as volunteer disaster relief workers and patient support compassionate care volunteers in a hospital setting. Their training includes Presbyterian Disaster Preparedness with emphasis on emotional care in disaster settings, American Red Cross supporting victims in crisis, and Lancaster General Health “Listening Skills” for volunteers. They developed Guidelines for Sensitivity and Listening Skills: Helping Citizens to Cope for Lend A Hand volunteers, and both have extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector including the managing of staff and volunteers. Lourene’s background also includes many years working as a Hospice nurse.

ALAN RUBY is a retired Lutheran Minister. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he was awarded advanced degrees by Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg. He also holds a Master’s Degree with a major in American History from the University of Delaware. Pastor Ruby served six churches in South Central Pennsylvania as well as one in Delaware. In retirement, he conducts services in area churches, teaches courses in American History and serves as an Amish Farmland tour guide.

STEPHEN A. RUNKLE is a retired Hydraulic Engineer who has spent a lifetime of free time studying area history and its consequences. Over the past eight years he has given nearly 30 presentations through Pathways Institute at Messiah Village and Landis Homes, where he has received highly favorable evaluations from his students. He has also led several successful field trips for Pathways Institute.

AL SCHAUB is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Management Development at Penn State University, and a retired psychological and management consultant. Professor Schaub’s special interests include the merger of psychological principles with Christian faith and culture. His past experience includes work as a director of psychological services in a medium security prison, criminal court consulting, workplace violence consulting, and lecturing on violence and the sociopathic personality.

GREGORY J. SCOTT is a senior partner in the architectural firm of RLPS Architects. Mr. Scott graduated from Penn State University in 1973, and was awarded a Bachelors Degree of Architecture with Honors. He holds professional affiliations with the American Institute of Architects, LeadingAge and the National Hospice Organization. His past trustee positions include Samaritan Counseling Center and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. In addition to practicing architecture, he writes, enjoys amateur photography, and lectures at national and international conferences on healthcare.

TATJANA SLJAPIC is a cardiologist in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and she is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Sljapic has offices and sees patients in Lancaster, Ephrata, and Garden Spot Village in New Holland. She received her medical degree from University of Novi Sad Faculty of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Sljapic is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.

CONRAD STANITSKI has a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry. Dr. Stanitski spent more than four decades as a chemistry professor teaching about nuclear phenomena to science and non-science majors. He is retired from Franklin & Marshall College.

ELVIN R. STOLTZFUS is a resident of Landis Homes and a staff bus driver. He has a keen interest in the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead, especially since this is the 250th Anniversary of the Amish Stoltzfus Family landing in Philadelphia in 1766.

DOLORES TRUITT is a graduate of Dickinson College, and she had additional study at The University of Delaware. After retirement from teaching at Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, she took six trips to Italy visiting Roman and Etruscan ancient sites. Mrs. Truitt taught at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington, Delaware, and she has given presentations to retirement communities and numerous civic organizations.

A. RICHARD WEAVER, M.D, M.DIV. completed a Master of Divinity degree through Lancaster Theological Seminary prior to doing five years in spiritual formation and direction, and he holds a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Oasis Ministries. Richard and his wife Ruth have visited and spent time at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, PA for 25 years.

RUTH WEAVER has taken seminary courses since graduation from college. She has completed seven years of training in spiritual formation and spiritual direction training, and has a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Kairos School of Spiritual Formation and Friendship. Ruth and her husband Richard have visited and spent time at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, PA for 25 years with private and group retreats.

THOMAS R. WINPENNY has a Ph.D. in History and 50 years of teaching experience. Dr. Winpenny has published five books as well as many articles and papers. He is retired from Elizabethtown College.

BOB WYBLE retired in 2004, after 34 years of service as an educator. He taught biology at McCaskey High School and Penn Manor High School. He completed his career in education as an assistant principal at Warwick High School. Mr. Wyble received a Bachelor’s Degree from Millersville University and a Master’s Degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. While teaching at McCaskey and Penn Manor high schools, he led student groups on hikes to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Mr. Wyble is an amateur photographer who enjoys traveling with his wife, and he also enjoys fishing on his boat and playing golf.

PAUL M. ZEHR has advanced degrees in biblical studies. Dr. Zehr has taught both Old Testament and New Testament courses on the college and seminary levels, and he has a published book on the Old Testament tabernacle.
