Summary of Proposed Action (use additional sheet if necessary):

The Landscape Management minor (Code#AG05) is currently an approved minor offered through the Plant Science (PLSC) program in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA). As a consequence of course revisions and renumbering, the current requirements for the Landscape Management minor does not meet the requirement of 9 credits hours of coursework at the 300-level or higher. This proposal modifies the course requirements for this minor to include a minimum of 9 credit hours of course work at the 300-level or higher and also increases the number of credit hours to 22 for successful completion of the minor.

Unit Code(s) (to be entered by the Office of Academic Planning and Programs):

In order to complete this form, you will need to copy this template to your own document, then complete, print, and submit this proposal with the PCC Cover Sheet

Program: Landscape Management minor (Code#AG05) in the Plant Science (PLSC) program

Date of Proposal: November 8, 2017

Start Term for New Version of Program: Spring semester 2018

A program modification can consist of the following actions: (a) modifying current requirements; (b) adding, modifying or discontinuing a concentration or specialization, (c) changing the delivery method (offering the program online, at a new off-campus location, or in a non-standard term), or (d) renaming a program. Enter information in the space provided below each prompt (note that Prompts 1 & 2 will provide essential contextual information for the reviewers). Please feel free to add additional information at the end of this document or in a separate appendix. Also, if the nature of the modification does not seem to fit this template, contact us at pcc-submissions(a)umd.edu and we can work together to customize the template to fit your needs.

1. Current Catalog Description of Program. Include any special admissions information.

The Landscape Management minor provides students with a foundation in plant sciences and business management. The required science courses lead to an integrative understanding of plant growth and development and the plant's responses to its environment. These courses also teach students the skills needed to recommend best management practices and to identify plant abnormalities in the landscape. The business courses in this minor foster an understanding of the business structure, human resource management and financial management associated with landscape management companies.

All courses presented in this minor must be passed with a grade of "C-" or better. To complete this minor, students will be expected to complete an 18-19 credit course sequence. Students should also be aware that many of the courses in this minor list PLSC100, Introduction to Horticulture, as a prerequisite.

2. Current Requirements for Program. Include all course requirements for program.

Current requirements list in the current catalog are: Curriculum:

Credits PLSC253 Woody Plants for Mid-Atlantic Landscapes I 3 PLSC254 Woody Plants for Mid-Atlantic Landscapes II 3 PLSC305 Introduction to Turf Management 3 PLSC361 Commercial Principles of Landscape Management 3 PLSC452 Environmental Horticulture 3

Select one of the following courses: AREC240 Introduction to Agriculture and the Environment 4 AREC250 Elements of Agricultural and Resource Economics 3 AREC306 Farm Management 3 BMGT220 Principles of Accounting I 3

Total Credits: A minimum of 18 or 19 credits is required to complete this minor. (Depending on which AREC or BMGT course is chosen)

3. Description and Rationaie for IModifications. Be sur;^ to specify wiietiier modifications apply to tiie entire program or to a particular specialization,' coricentriation, or offering (e.g., online offering) of tiie program. Otiienwise, different modification types will require different Idnds of information:

• if adding a new concentration or specialization, explain wiiy tills concentration or specialization sliouid be offered through your program.

• if changing program delh^ery options, explain why the new delivery option is necessary and feasible (note that additional information will be needed in prompt 9). Also, if the online or off-campus program will have a different curriculum than the on-site program, explain why.

• If renaming the program, indicate the reason for the new name, and state whether the curriculum is also changing.

The Landscape Managennent minor (Code#AG05) is currently an approved minor offered through the Plant Science (PLSC) program in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA). In addition, based on input from the Landscape Management Industry, the course requirements have also been modified to a stronger foundation in plant sciences and management.

4. New course requirements. For curriculum changes, the clearest way to present curriculum change is to use a two-column table, with the old curriculum in the left column and the new curriculum in the right. For example:

Current Currfculum (Credits) Proposed Curriculum (Credits)

COUR 100 Course Title A (3) COUR 100 Course TiUe A (3)

COUR 200 Course Title B (3; COUR 200 Course Title B (3) Removed

COUR 201 Course Title C (3) New

COUR 400 Course Title 0 (3) COUR 400 Course Title D (3)

Total Credits: M Total Credits:«#

Start with the table provided below, or add your own table as an appendix. For a new concentration or specialization, add the requirements in lieu of the table. For a new delivery option, such as online delivery w a new ofi^campus site, indicate the courses that will be offered through the new delivery option onlv if they differ from the requirements or offerings in the existing program.

Because PLSC305 and PLSC361 have been revised to PLSC205 and PLSC251 the proposed changes reflect these changes in course numbering. Based on input from the Landscape Management Industry, the major stakeholder associated with this minor, the program has also strengthened the foundational aspect of plant

science to meet the needs of these stakeholders. This includes the addition of PLSC401, PLSC402, PLSC410

and PLSC453 and removed AREC240, AREC306 and BMGT220.

6. Sample plan. Provide a term by term sample plan tiiat shows how a hypothetical student would progress through the program to completion. For undergraduate programs, this should be the four-

Please note: new courses or modifications to courses need to be submitted through the Testudo Curriculum Management system and will need to follow the normal VPAC course proposal review process. You may submit individual course changes to VPAC concurrently with the PCC proposal; however, the course changes may be held depending on the outcome of the PCC proposal.

9. Impact on current students. It should be specifically aclinowledged that students enrolled in the program prior to the effective date of any curriculum change may complete their program under the old requirements if they wish. The courses required must remain available, or suitable substitutions specifically designated.

Please note: If the proposed curriculum change affects articulation or transfer programs, the

proposal should explain how currently-enrolled community college students will be able to complete

their projected programs. Any necessary modifications to articulation agreements should be

attached.

The proposed changes will impact current students that are participating in this minor since current course designations does not fulfill the 9 credit hour requirement of courses at the 300-level or higher. Therefore, this change is necessary so that students participating in this minor meet the University minor requirements.
