Editor’s columnNot a lot has happened in the Brown camp as regardscars although one very positive thing has been thatthere have been no more hefty garage bills. Not thatwe have been trouble free. The Birkin suffered brokenbrackets for one cycle wing and my first attempt at arepair did not last too long - on the way back from aShACC run to the Welsh coast the wing completelyfell off. The new brackets I have made are the samebasic design but are hopefully stronger.

That run back in September was in fact the last longtrip purely for amusement although we did have a fewdays in Dorset driving the Bertini. One reason is thatwe made our annual trip to the States to see ourdaughter, followed by my one week a year working, which this time was in Vichy, France. We originallyintended to drive, which would have been great fun,but Vichy is somewhat lacking in parking and thehotel could not guarantee us a place. Leaving an opencar on the street is not an option I like. In the States, driving a Ford Five Hundred was not a sportingexperience but certainly comfortable.

CrofterraCrews gathered under blue skies and sunshine for thestart of Highland Car Clubs 2015 CrofterraPandemonia on Saturday 5th September in FortWilliam. A great selection of classic and sporting cars, with some never done it before crews, including Brianand Jackie Hodges in their MGB Roadster, andAndrew and Josie Smedley in their Triumph Stag allthe way from Nottingham.  They all adorned the BenNevis Hotel car park as the drivers fettled their steedsin preparation for the first leg of some 200 miles downthe west coast of Scotland.Colin Jaggard's head seemed to be more buried underthe bonnet of his Land Rover Defender 90 than mostothers. Now Colin's Landie is no ordinary Defender.A 4 litre V8 fed by a couple of big SU carbs makesthis a real beast on the road and can catch most classiccars with ease. However, Colin was suffering realmisfire problems, which started on the way to the start."I purposely put a new coil on this earlier in the week"commented Colin as he hunted for a spare. I rememberthe 2010 Crofterra where we were under the bonnetof his 1956 Morris Minor solving similar ignitionproblems on that occasion too. Replacing the new coilwith the old fixed the problem. A guarantee refund onthe cards I can see. No such issues for thesupercharged 4 litre V8 500bhp Ford Cortina Mk2 of Chris McCulloch and Michael Skelly. This monsteris usually at home on the drag strip. What a great noisethough when pressing the loud pedal. We studied the road book Dave Spence had puttogether, which was a mix of map with superimposedtulip instructions at key junctions. Dave has used isdesign many times and it works well, better than tuliponly which, if you lose your place, can leave you withno idea where you are. He also added a Gazetteerhighlighting interesting places and views on ourroute. Roddie Main and Dave Spence flagged off the57 starters, with Jimmy 'Alfa' MacDonald leading theway in his 2600 sprint, to take a few photos of onroute.  We  headed south  toward Ballachulish, toAppin, passing Castle Stalker sitting proudly in LochLaich by Loch Linnhe. No sign of Monty Python whofilmed the 'The Holy Grail' there. We then took thefirst of many single track loops by South Shian beforecrossing Loch Creran  at Creagan bridge.  Not longbefore we were off the main A828 heading forBonawe. I was not the only one to wrong slot intoBarcaldine House which was just before the Bonawejunction. Tom Niven told me he had quite a fewfollowers drive through the gates behind him to thebig house! The drive through Gleann Salach wasmagnificent, offering some fantastic views over the

River Esray and Loch Etive as we climbed up the passand down toward the Connel bridge and the Falls ofLora. No sooner were we over the bridge before we turnedhard left over the moor, with its blind summits, toKilmore, bypassing Oban on the coast. Rejoining themain A816 provided a chance to open the throttles abit and relax. I pulled in at the Culfail hotel inKilmelford after spotting a few classics lined up thecar park.  Ian and Catherine Higgins in their MGBroadster and Tom Niven in his MGF were enjoying acoffee stop, so we joined them. Unfortunately, Ian hadeaten the last scone, so I had to do without! Anotherwrong slot as I missed the turn up to Loch Avich. nottoo far before the penny dropped and turned round toget back on route. Reaching Loch Awe we headedsouth through Dalavich to Ford, taking in some greatviews over the loch, rejoining the A816 toLochgilphead, crossing the Crinan Canal..Reaching Lochgilphead we continued down into theMull of Kintyre. This was a first both for the eventand for me as we took some of the single track routesover to the western edge of the mainland. Tightcorners and blind summits were the order of the dayso drivers had to keep their eyes peeled for oncomingcars, tractors and yes buses. A few breathe in momentsas dived toward the verges, particularly when we meta tour of some 40 Grasshoppers coming at us. These3 wheelers are similar to the Morgan 3 wheeler cars, sporting anything from 2CV to Moto Guzzi enginesin front of the radiator grills. CCHMSC member TomRae is often seen on our events in his, come rain orshine. Thanks to Tony and Shona Leese in their HondaS2000 for this photo, with the Hodges MGB upahead.    However, I still managed to wrong slot, ignoring my co-drivers instructions (Oops). I savedmy embarrassment by catching a fellow Crofterran inthe shape of John and Tracey Morrison in their TVRChimera pulling into a field. What views we wererewarded with. Jura and Islay were visible across aclear calm sea, under a cloudless sunny sky. Our TVRfriends put me straight. Lost  who's lost. No such thingon the Crofterra. Simply an opportunity to explorenearby interesting places! The Gazeteer feature inDave's road book meant lots to see on the wayround. The Mull of Kintyre heads all the way downto Campbeltown but we looped back when we reachedsight of the island of Gigha, heading back up theeastern side of Kintyre to Lochgilphead. The route headed into Kilmichael Glen to Loch Aweon the south side to Cladich and Dalmally, signalingthe final leg for the first day as we used the A85 backto Oban for the overnight. Exhausted but what a greatday. I was glad to see Ian Smith had arrived with hisHillman Imp. Unusually, he had not been forced to

stop to take it apart anywhere at all. Daughter Tracyin her Riley Elf was also going strong. The evening get together in the Rowantree Hotelin Oban gave us plenty time to swap stories beforeRoddie got up to start the traditional raffle. Lots ofinteresting and unusual prizes on offer, but I failedto have the tickets for either the bottles of wine, orwhisky. By the end of the evening some £650 hadbeen raised for Maggies Centre (Inverness) forcancer support, and Woodlands Centre for adultswith Dementia and Alzheimer, which would extendto over £1200 by the time the second raffle at thefinish venue was completed.Sunday morning awakened with a sea mist whichhad cleared by the time we met for the restart at10.00am. Nice of Highland Club to arrange an easystart, being kind to those who may have overindulged the night before! The mini of WilliePreece and Graeme (Hawkeye) Finlayson  wassounding quite throaty as we headed out of Obanon the old road to Taynuilt, climbing past McCaig'sfolly, looking like the Colosseum in Rome. Nogladiators today though. These little used roadshave some great open sections, even if theyare single track, and some of the more enthusiasticdrivers used them to clear the cobwebs from boththemselves and the cars. Adrian Harper found hisFord Mustang  had plenty of torque and grunt tokeep up, but sheer size was a problem. Neverattempt to keep up with HCC crews, especially inhot Mk2 Escorts, which is where it came to grieffor Adrian. Bottoming out after a slight 'yump'fractured the gearbox casing leaving vital fluids onthe road. Retirement and return home to NorthYorkshire was on the cards. Real pity as this is thefirst we have seen Adrian for a few years. Let'shope we see him again soon, hopefully in someother exotic classic machinery.Once back on the A85 the crews could relax for afew miles on their way to Glen Orchy. This popularmotorsport loop alongside the River Orchy wasunusually quiet this time, missing the motor homebrigade coming the other way. After the 10 miledrive to the top of the glen, it was back to Tyndrumand the Green Welly, where a few crews had pulledin for a coffee stop. Fully refreshed, we pressed onto Crianlarich and along to Killin, through GlenDochart, under the gaze of Ben More. We took awhite at Auchlyne crossing gated roads. After Killin, we cut off toward Bridge of Balgie, passing Ben Lawers and the dam. At Fortingall weonce more met a selection of Crofterrans who hadpulled in for refreshments. Mags and DonCampbell in their Redish Ferrari 308 were there, and the car and crew will be with us on the

Montagnes de France in a couple of weeks. Fortingall ishome to the oldest tree in the UK, a Yew which states5000 years old, but experts reckon nearer 2000. It lookedold to me, almost as old as Dave and Roddie, as it bathedin the sun in the churchyard. Legend  has it that PontiousPilate was born in the shade of its branches. Hope heenjoyed the local hospitality which we did. With Schiehallion in our sights, we drove toward LochRannoch, visiting Kinloch Rannoch, as we pushed onthrough the Grampians to Trinafour and the A9 atDalnacardoch Lodge. Jumping off the A9 pastDalwhinnie distillery we took a loop by Laggan toKingussie preparing for our final 'loop' by Feshiebridge,Coylumbridge, Boat of Garten, Carrbridge, where Icaught Balmore and Cawdor. Tom Niven and KarenWilson in the MGF came to grief when they picked uproad debris that sliced a water hose losing all the coolant.A recovery and repair in progress. The rest of us pointedour bonnets toward Inverness and the finish atFairways.  Just how Dave and Roddie will top thisCrofterra route is hard to see, but I'm sure they will comeup with something just as exciting for next year, whenI hope we will see you all again for the 12th running ofCrofterra Pandemonia 2016.

Classic VehicleRestoration ShowWith less Kit car shows to go to and theExeter show now confined to the historybooks as well, Complete Kit Car invitedGTMOC to have an inside stand at TheClassic and Restoration Show near Bath onthe 7th/8th November.

Although I posted the details on the forumasking for cars to attend, only two Libraswere going. We booked b & b for two nightstravelling down on Friday before the showas we needed to be on the club stand before9.00am on Saturday. The weather forecastfor the weekend was not good and yes, itrained on the way down there.

Arriving at the show at about 8am on theSaturday morning [in the rain] we managedto wash our cars prior to the opening of theshow.

It chucked it down in the morning butbrightened up slightly in the afternoon, andwe were visited by the owners of a Rossa 11and a K3 who were parked in the outsidedisplay area . Sunday drizzled all day but alot more visitors attended the show, including another Libra owner.

The show was quite good, two or three timesthe size of the old Exeter kit car show. Therewere 4 exhibition halls, one for kit cars, 2with classic cars and the other one waspacked with auto jumble etc. There was alsoan outside exhibitors area for those unableto get inside before 9.00am. So, although theweather was awful, we were inside mostlyso it didn't matter too much.

Overall, a good weekend using our cars andmeeting up with friends and fellow GTMowners, and a thank you to Ian Stent ofComplete Kit Car who provided freetea/coffee and biscuits for kit car owners.

TechnicalSPYDER UPDATE

September brought the MOT, so I booked it in a coupleof weeks before it expired, just to be safe, and the GTMwent straight through, with a couple of advisories butthese are small jobs to keep me busy over winter.Touch wood, the electrical gremlins seem to be sortedfor now.

So, since the mot did not bring up any surprises, I havefitted a new battery and a charging connector so I canplug my charger in without removing the spare wheel.I was thinking about extending that lead and run itthrough the the aerial grommet and but it inside thecar. I took the photo without the wheel as I could notget a good picture of the lead with the wheel in place.

I re-fitted the driver door panel and fitted some newpanel clips as the front two screws were not holdinginto anything, and this has sorted one of the rattles. Thestereo was always only working on one speaker and ifI was playing a cd this skipped every time you wentover a pot hole, and we seem to have a lot of them inYorkshire so I decided to swap the stereo for a unit thatI can use my iPhone as the player. The speaker faultwas traced to a loose cable so I now have a stereo thatdoes not skip and plays on all the speakers, and havesecured the stereo cable that kept getting in the way.

I have found a company to manufacture a new pipe toreplace the cut down Rover pipe currently used to takethe expansion tank take off, and I’m getting a M22threaded boss welded in to allow me to fit a sensor.Once it arrives, I will get this fitted and send in somedetails if it works!

I was hoping to make it to Brands hatch for a finalrun out before I park the GTM up for winter, but thishas been cancelled, however, I had booked the hotel,so it would be a shame not to let the car have a runSouth for the weekend, let’s hope its dry so the topcan come off!

News from members9GER NEWS

All my Coupe progress is being posted on the forumso no need to duplicate it here, apart from saying ourcooler weather is approaching which will give meless excuse not to be outside under the burning sun,and also the F1 and MotoGP season is almost at anend so that will be another distraction I can’t use foran excuse not to crack on with my GTM build. Onlythe Dakar to look forward to and that is shown about9.00 at night!Nothing to do with GTM, but during my Septemberstay in the UK I had a day off fettling my Jedi racecar and went to a Thursday test day at DonningtonPark, as the Formula Jedi circuit racers were therethe following weekend and they like to get set upbeforehand. Although the smallest cars, they wereby far the quickest there, but next door to the Jedipit garage was a pre-war Mercedes GP car 5.6lt twincam straight 8 supercharged on methanol. It turnedout to be a replica, but what a piece of engineering, just to think you have to make every part of acomplete car as complex as that!Just warming it up made what little hair I have standon the back of my neck and on an open pipe it wasloud, many people standing there had fingers in theirears.Take careJohn

HELLO FROM MARTIN FOYLE

Hi again, sorry you have not heard much from methis year, its just been a very busy time from start tofinish. But the good news is it was all great fun, lotsof big celebrations, a 40th anniversary, a 50thanniversary, 60th and 70th birthdays, just to name afew, also a house to wire in Shetland all makes for avery busy and forgetful time - as I still haven’t paidmy membership fee's 'oops' it will get there one day.So with all that said and done its been a miserableyear for the Rossa, no work done at all I'm afraid, itis just sitting at the back of my garage awaiting someTLC, hopefully this winter will be a bit moreproductive.Anyway, we did have a bit of success and managedto get the Corrado ready (someone else did the hardwork) for the ‘La Crofterra Pandemonia' which againtook place in September. This was the 11th runningand must have been one of the best as the weatherwas fantastic, wall to wall sunshine for 2 days. Itstarted in Fort William and finished back in Invernesswith some 450 hard miles covered, Again, we werein the company of some beautiful cars, ranging fromMustang, Ferrari, TVR, lots of 2 seaters, Fords, evena V8 landrover and, as you know, I like my VW's somy Corrado VR6 was our steed for the weekend. Of the 57 cars that left fort William, only 2 nevercompleted the course ,those being the Mustang anda MGF - it says a lot for the reliability of these oldcars and the love and attention lavished on them bythere owners. I am still very hopeful that I willeventually complete the Crofterra in my GTM Rossa

My GTM fascination started in 2005, when I stumbledupon the GTM website. I fell for the Spyder at once, and started to check the possibilities of getting one. Ieven got an e-mail from GTM that they had a red LHDdemonstrator with a 1.4 engine! But no - when I talkedto the Norwegian car authorities, they responded bylisting the 46 regulations I needed to comply with inorder to get a Norwegian registration! No wonder thatthere are no Norwegian kit-car clubs!I did not forget GTM, and infrequently kept an eyeon the website and the GTM forum. I was sad whenGTM was sold and subsequently closed down, andthought that that was the end of the GTM dream. In the meantime, the bureaucrats in Brussels weresilently working… The EU directive 2007/46/EUtook UK from SVA to IVA, and I think caused somedespair among UK kit car enthusiasts. In Norway itfinally resulted in a MAJOR change of guidelines forcar imported from EU: As long as a car has beenapproved in EU, it should be approved in Norway aswell!August 2013: Work was quiet, and a GTM Spydercame up on eBay. Andrew Simmons was selling his2003 Spyder, tub number 003, build by himself andhardly ever used since. My wife was skeptical, but Igot an OK to buy the car if I wanted.I flew in to Birmingham, and drove to Devon withDudley to look at the car. I came back less thanconvinced that this was a car for me – head gasketwas blown, ride was “appalling” according to Dudley, poor suspension, rattles etc. After a few days hardthinking I finally went for it.Andrew delivered the car at the Talon garage, whereDudley took the engine apart, new brakes, radiator, springs, dampers, ZCars suspension, timing belts, lights etc. during winter. We got some surprisesduring the upgrade, and I am very happy that I gotDudley to do the work.In May 2014 I had a serious talk with my wife: “I needto go to UK to get a dress I bought for you. It is in theboot of the car I bought.” She was nice about it. Soagain I flew into Birmingham. Dudley had done a

THE NORWEGIAN SPYDER

The e-mail from 23. Of December 2014 was short:Today we have finally approved your GTMSpyder, the paperwork is ready forcollection at Bergen Traffic Services.Merry christmas!

It only took 7 months!

Page 15: GTMOC Newsletter - Plusnet newsletter19.pdf · 2016-09-24 · Newsletter December 2015 GTMOC. 2 Who’s Who Secretary Bob Snooks 73, Plough Lane Stoke Poges Buckinghamshire ... the

superb job with the car, and I was very pleased withthe ZCars suspension. On my way to the ferry atImmingham I met up with Don Stephenson and PhilipDawson , and had a nice chat and a test drive in Don’sself-build Libra. It was interesting to compare Don’ssuspension to my ZCars suspension and to feel thedifference.

The ferry from Immingham to Brevik/Norway is theeasiest way to travel, and the crossing was smooth. After clearing customs, I started the 6 hour drive acrossthe mountains to Bergen. Clear blue sky, top down andmy “new” car – what more could I wish for?The drive through the Norwegian mountains wasfantastic - sun, snow on the mountain tops, dry andwinding road and not too much traffic. I only wantedto drive and drive, no time for stopping!Back in Bergen I went to get Norwegian plates, but Iwas not straight forward! It turned out that the chassisnumber and engine number in the V5C was wrong! Icontacted British authorities, and it turned out there

were no record that the car had been SVA-ed! Afterseveral letters and explanations I finally got anofficial confirmation that the V5C numbers werewrong, and sent to Norwegian authorities. It took 7months, and I finally got plates on the car in February2015. As far as I know this is the only GTM in Norway.

So how has the car been?I now understand what Dudley meant when he saidthat I will need to get my hands dirty with a GTM!No big issues, but a continuous need for checkingbolts and nuts, tighten engine coolant hoses, listenfor strange noises etc. The smell of petrol becamemore evident during the first summer, and finallythere was a leak during petrol filling. It turned outthat a sharp edge on the metal filling tube had cut intothe rubber hose going in to the tank. I had to takedown the tank in order to find it, but I think it is OKnow. Overheating in slow summer traffic has been aproblem, maybe due to insufficient bleeding. After having two summers in the Spyder, I haveidentified a few modifications I want to do thiswinter: Mike Saturn cable gearchange, Land Roverthermostat and a shroud for the radiator fan. After two summers with the Spyder I am very pleasedwith the car. It is fun to drive, and will put a smile onmy face and fellow motorists. OK, you need to be anoptimist to drive a convertible in Bergen, but I haveused it frequently from May to October. WesternNorway has some nice roads with beautiful scenery,so there are ample opportunities for nice drives. Feelfree to contact me if you are planning a drive inNorway!
