Welcome to the March 2021 edition of the Atlas All Scale Monthly Catalog (ASMC). The ASMC is the basis of our guaranteed pre-order system. Before the go ahead is given to suppliers for final production, Atlas announces to its customers the products we are preparing to produce. This announcement comes in the form of the ASMC, which gives customers the chance to place guaranteed pre-orders by the given deadline. Atlas will try to fill orders placed after the deadline, but they will not be guaranteed. Occasionally, Atlas will speculate on order quantities to bring products to the market quicker. We will do our best to meet demand, however, in these instances allocations to dealers, distributors and their customers may be necessary.

The March ASMC kicks off with a new run of Atlas’ N Scale Dash 8-40B/BW Locomotives as well as the return of the great Russell Snow Plow with some added detail. In HO we have a new run of Master U30Cs as well as Master 50’ Postwar Double Door Boxcars. Both N and HO modelers will see the return of the Master 40’ Standard-Height Containers for intermodal trains, as well as Trainman PS-2 Covered Hoppers to service your cement plants. You will also find various HO and N etched metal parts in this month’s catalog. For O Scalers, we have new batches of Master 17,360 Gallon Tank Cars and 70 Ton 3-Bay Hoppers to add to your consists.

Built in the late 1980s by GE, the DASH 8-40B diesel locomotives were identified by their dynamic brake gear located along the roof line between the cab and engine compartment, with ventilation provided by large roof-top grilles. These four-axle, high horsepower engines are still in service today in North America.

The Russell Snow Plow is a critical piece of MOW equipment for Northern railroads that have to deal with harsh winter storms. The Russell Snow Plow is most often used for clearing large snow drifts and snow embankments along the railroad right of way. In the summer months Russell Snow Plows can typically be spotted in yards and service facilities alongside other MOW equipment. The Russell Snow Plows have been a mainstay of Northern railroading since the 1920s and they don’t appear to be going anywhere soon.

The development of shipping containers reached a turning point in the late 1970s when standardization began to take place. Prior to this time numerous designs and sizes of containers were seen throughout the world. The true intermodal era began in the 1980s with the expanding world economy, Panama Canal ship size restrictions, intermodal railway car (wagon) designs and the setting of ISO standards for international shipping containers.

Today’s commonly seen steel all-corrugated ISO containers still have some variations, primarily the doors. The new Atlas model will be a standard-height 40-footer which will exhibit a range of door styles, roofs, and front walls to more closely match the variations in the prototype containers seen throughout the world.

The General Electric U30C locomotive was put into production in 1966, replacing the similar looking U28C. Offering 200 more horsepower than its predecessor, the U30C allowed GE to compete with the EMD’s SD40 in the horsepower race. The U30C proved to be very popular, selling 600 units during its 10 year production span, making it the best selling Universal Series GE locomotive.

This new model from Atlas represents a Phase 1 U30C. The primary spotting feature is constant width long hood (later phase models featured a wider radiator section), as well as various radiator intake arrangements. Note that Atlas also offers the later Phase 2 and Phase 3 models, so the Phase 1 allows you to select the most accurate U30C for your favorite railroad.

Before the advent of specialty car types (such as covered hoppers and auto racks), nearly every type of product was shipped in a box car. 50’ Box Cars gained popularity in the late 1930s as they offered additional space for bulkier freight vs. the then-common 40’ car. Single door versions would become most common, although many double door cars would be constructed to assist with the handling of bulkier freight such as automobiles, furniture and lum-ber. In fact, many railroads classified double door box cars as “automobile cars” or “furniture cars” in deference to their specialized service. Double door box cars typically had reinforced flooring to handle the weight of heavier loads and the equipment used during the loading and unloading process.

The development of shipping containers reached a turning point in the late 1970s when standardization began to take place. Prior to this time numerous designs and sizes of containers were seen throughout the world. The true intermodal era began in the 1980s with the expanding world economy, Panama Canal ship size restrictions, intermodal railway car (wagon) designs and the setting of ISO standards for international shipping containers. Steel became the norm and two heights of 40-foot containers eventually became standard worldwide; the standard-height (8’ 6”) and the high-cube (9’ 6”).

In addition to ISO size standardization, assembly-line manufacturing standardization brought the steel container from various aluminum and steel designs to a more similar design. In the late 1970s squared corrugations with double logo panels were common new-builds. The next step, occurring during the early 80s changed the squared corrugations to a beveled design. Finally, in the late 80s, the logo panels were no longer seen on new-builds and the all-corrugated side container emerged as most production was shifted to China.

Today’s commonly seen steel all-corrugated ISO containers still have some variations, primarily the doors. The Atlas model represents a standard-height 40’er which will exhibit a range of door styles, roofs, and front walls to more closely match the variations in the prototype containers seen throughout the world.

Covered hoppers are a relatively new car family. The AAR considered these “special” cars until the 1980’s when they finally got their own car type code category. These early covered hopper designs were built primarily for more efficient cement loading and unloading (previously cement was bagged and placed in box cars). This two-bay covered hopper car design was built by Pullman-Standard starting in the late 1940s with production continuing into the 1950s. This car features eight round roof hatches for quick loading. Two large gravity gates were used to discharge the commodity as quickly as possible. Capacity is rated at 2,003 cubic foot.

This familiar hopper was an industry standard on many railroads since the 1930s. It was adopted by the AAR as a recommended design, but fell out of favor by the mid-1950s. While offering greater capacity over cars with conventional flat sides, the original open hoppers created corrosive interaction between acidic coal and the car’s joints, leading to costly rebuilding programs.
