Clothing

A light jacket for the evenings, and when we are in the mountains is suggested, especially during the chilly nights.

Comfortable walking shoes are needed for walking distances and climbing.

Closed slippers are recommended for hygiene reasons. Open toe slippers can be worn indoors. High heels are not recommended.

Guatemalans are very modest and conservative. We should dress in the same manner.

Very light cotton materials, double layered clothing is suggested.

Because of heavy rainfall, a good umbrella or rain jacket will be necessary.

Because we will spend a lot of time in the sun, a hat, visor, sunglasses, to protect your head, face, and eyes will come in handy.

Communication

There is Wi-Fi at the hotel we are staying at.

It’s best to keep your phone on airplane mode till you are in a wi-fi area.

It would also be beneficial to turn off your voicemail feature on your phone till you return.

Make sure to check with your cell phone provider to see what the cost is for messaging, data, and calls while roaming in Guatemala.

There are 3 major cell phone providers in Guatemala; Movie Star, Claro, and Tigo.

You can take an unlocked phone and buy a SIM card to make calls.

Average calls to the US is about .10 a minute (using their providers)

We should have an emergency phone available for places where there is no wi-fi.

Take advantage of Skype, Facetime, Whatsapp, or any app that you can use to communicate using Wi-fi.

To call the US from Guatemala – 00 + 1 + 210 (xxx – xxxx).
