A collection that covers both a wide geographical area and timeline, but always with a focus on our core values.

All Gubi pieces are developed in close cooperation with the designers, with the ultimate aim of produc-ing beautiful, authentic, innovative and functional designs of the highest quality and who, in turn, will add new stories to the saga. Gubi will continue to collaborate with contemporary designers who share our vision and aesthetic while we celebrate the past by reissuing for the forgotten gems.

In other words; desIgn Icons

through tIme!

JACOB GUBI

The ability to develop design icons - and to uncover them - runs in the Gubi family DNA. An eagle eye, together with a healthy dose of obstinacy and the courage to follow through an idea has been passed down from Lisbeth and Gubi Olsen to their sons Jacob and Sebastian Gubi, who today are responsible for managing the creative vision of the company that their parents founded in 1967.

To be included in the Gubi collection, a piece must have that something special, by virtue of its design, its materials or its technology. We choose only de-signs that are unique, modern and classic, which are equally valid today as when they were first designed - that is, designs that are, or have the clear potential to become, design icons. In addition to the 1930’s Bauhaus inspired Bestlite Collection, Gubi’s rich and varied portfolio currently includes iconic 1950’s reissues by Greta Grossman, Barba Corsini, Jacques Adnet and Mathieu Maté-got, 1960’s pieces by Bonderup and Thorup and Jens

Quistgaard and Gubi Olsen’s 1980’s distinctive up-holstered furniture collection. Recent collaborations with contemporary designers who share the com-pany’s aims and aesthetic, notably Komplot Design, GamFratesi, Henning Larsen and Paul Leroy, have resulted in award-winning designs such as the Gubi Chair, designed by Komplot design in 2003 and the Masculo chair, designed by GamFratesi in 2011.

Since the beginning in 1967, Gubi’s core philosophy has been to create beautifully crafted and timeless designs, with aesthetics, innovation, functionality and quality as guiding principles. First came the development of Gubi Olsen’s own furniture designs and the foundation of the now legendary textile, Holmens Klæde. Over the years, this philosophy has evolved and Gubi is now also focused on sourcing and reproduc-ing design icons from the past – to build a classic col-lection of design icons from 1930 to the present.

The Bestlite Collection1930 D e s i g n e d by Ro b e r t D u d l ey B e s t

Bestlite has been in continuous production since 1930. Winston Churchill is numbered amongst its many famous users. The Bestlite design was con-ceived by Robert Dudley Best who was highly influ-enced by the Bauhaus movement.

Bauhaus, the German school that merged practi-cal crafts with fine arts, had profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design and industrial design and Bauhaus style became one of the most influ-ential forces behind Modernist architecture and modern design.

Eighty years on, the Bestlite design stays close to its industrial roots and true to its original design. Bestlite is held in permanent collections at both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Mu-seum in London.

Loved by architects, designers and design aficiona-dos through its 80-year history, today, Bestlite en-joys global iconic status.

The Adnet Collection1946 D e s i g n e d b y J a c q u e s A d n e t

Jacques Adnet is a furniture designer best known for his Art Deco Modernist designs and an icon of French Modernism. Known for his avant-garde de-signs, Adnet was one of the first to integrate metal and glass in the structure and decoration of furni-ture. His style is the epitome of luxury.

Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s and flourished interna-tionally throughout the 1930s, into the World War II era.

In 1950, Adnet formed a partnership with the French fashion house, Hermes, where he devel-oped a collection of leather-covered furniture and interior accessories, including a series of distinctive leather mirrors. Besides the remarkable full grain leather and solid brass details, the Adnet Circulaire mirror is also unique as the strap is in direct propor-tion to the dimension of the mirror. The collection to date includes the Adnet Circulaire and Rectan-gulaire.

The Grossman Collection1950 D e s i g n e d b y G r e t a G r o s s m a n

Grossman was highly influenced by European Modernism, which had been imported to the US by influential architects, such as Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. Grossman, in turn, played a significant role in defining the aesthetic of mid-century Californian Modernism. Although the Swedish-born designer and architect, designed for several companies during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s it is almost impossible to find original pieces of her work today. Her furniture, along with the houses she designed, was often custom-built or produced in exceptionally small numbers.

The most iconic products Greta Grossman de-signed were the Gräshoppa and the Cobra lamps.

Greta Magnusson Grossman [1906 - 1999]

The iconic Gräshoppa lamp was first produced in 1947 and in 1950, the Cobra lamp won the Good Design Award and was subsequently exhibited at the Good Design Show at the Museum of Mod-ern Art. The adventure continues with the reis-sue of some of Grossman’s best-known furniture designs from her “62-series”, designed in 1952 and so-named because the designs were deemed to be ten years ahead of their time. Everything is unique in their lightness of form and elegant, asymmetric lines.

Today, Grossman’s product designs are highly collectible and are sold at auctions all around the world.

The Pedrera Collection1953 Designed by Barba Corsini & Joaquim Ruiz Millet

Many architects and furniture designers of the Bau-haus era were intent on providing well-designed homes and impeccably manufactured furnishings for the “common man”. in 1955, Barba Corsini, a leading functionalist architect, realised his con-temporary vision through his renovation of the loft space and the furnishings he custom designed for “La Pedrera”.’

Antoni Gaudi, who originally designed “La Pe-drera”, is generally considered the great master of Spanish Modernism but his unique body of work cannot be defined by any single style or simple clas-sification.

Corsini was a great admirer of Finnish architecture, which he believed to be the finest in Europe on account of the powerful simplicity of the designs. ‘Powerful simplicity’ is indeed an apt description of Corsini’s personal design style, as represented by the Pedrera series. The Pedrera lamps are both modern and classic. Some of the lamps were designed by Barba Cor-sini, others in association with his protegé, Joaquim Ruiz Millet. The ABC Table Lamp, was designed in 2011 by Ruiz Millet as a tribute to Corsini.

The Matégot Collection1954 D e s i g n e d b y M a t h i e u M a t é g o t

Mathieu Matégot’s organic forms and lightness of touch create a sense of joy and the ground breaking and innovative techniques that he employed result in aesthetic and, above all, contemporary designs. Matégot was the first person to combine metal tubing with perforated sheet metal; a pairing that particularly characterizes his work. Many design-ers spend years developing their designs, simply to make them better and better. This was certainly not the case with Mathieu Matégot; he only devoted

one decade to the design of furniture and interior accessories, yet these distinctive 1950’s designs would later be considered iconic. Today, Matégot’s designs are equally fit for pur-pose as when they were originally conceived and his legendary designs are both timeless and classic. The three-legged nagasaki chair is still Matégot’s best-known piece and is included in the permanent exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum.

The Quistgaard Collection1966 D e s i g n e d b y J e n s Q u i s t g a a r d

Jens Quistgaard was an original thinker, an entrepre-neur, an innovator and a prolific designer. Through his collaboration with Ted Nierenberg, Quistgaard designed more than 4,500 products before his death in 2008. One of his most successful furniture de-signs is the distinctive Quistgaard Safari Chair, de-signed in 1965. The chair is one of a kind and today is considered an international design classic.

The term Danish Functionalism is used to describe the Danish branch of functionalist architecture, which had its heyday in the 1960s. Danish Func-

tionalists focused primarily on functionality at the expense of aesthetics and produced a number of buildings that are characterized by straight angles, flat roofs, and a rugged kind of austerity, evoked by the minimally decorated concrete slabs that the buildings themselves are made of.

Quistgaard’s designs have been awarded numerous prizes and are in the permanent collections at both the Museum of Modern Art in new York and the Louvre in Paris.

The Semi Collection1968 Designed by Bonderup & Thorup

The Semi lamp was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architec-ture students, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Tho-rup. Reacting against the ‘cosy era’ that was domi-nating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize.

Semi is a uniquely shaped pendant lamp. It is based on the meeting of two quarter circles, put back-to-

back. The dimension of these is equivalent to the diameter of the lamp shade – so everything is in balance.

With its distinctive arch-shaped, enamelled metal shade, lightness of form and unique, timeless de-sign, the elegant Semi lamp achieved great success in the 1980’s and became, at that time, the best-selling Danish design, gaining worldwide recogni-tion and iconic status.

The Gubi Collection1982 D e s i g n e d b y G u b i O l s e n

Gubi Olsen, founder of Gubi, has always pushed the boundaries to explore new directions in de-sign. Always with a global outlook he has created his own unique post-modernistic expression. The inspiration comes from the rich Danish tradition of craft and furniture production, mixed with histori-cal and visual references such as, French cinema, napoleon Bonaparte and a grand piano.

Gubi Olsen together with his wife, Lisbeth Olsen, founded GUBI A/S in 1967. Over the years, the

couple have created a large collection of uphol-stered furniture starting with the Canvas Collection in 1970 – they have also designed a furniture fabric, called Holmens Klæde.

The Gubi Collection today counts a wide range of lounge and seating furniture, the Diva Daybed from 1982, the Grand Piano from 1986 and the Bonapar-te series and Inuit, both from 1990.

The Gubi Chair Collection2003 D e s i g n e d b y K o m p l o t D e s i g n

One of Gubi’s most innovative products, the Gubi Chair collection, was designed by Boris Berlin and Poul Christiansen of Komplot Design. The Gubi Chair was the first furniture design ever to be based on the innovative technique of moulding three-di-mensional veneer. The 3-D design gives the chair a comfortable seat and sense of lightness. Ground-breaking technology allows the thickness of the ve-neer to be reduced to half that normally used.

The collection consists of a large program of chairs, stool, lounge chairs and tables in various combina-

The Gubi chair designed in 2003 has won numer-ous design awards and is included in the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in new York.

The Leroy Collection2007 D e s i g n e d b y P a u l L e r o y

Leroy Design is an international studio for archi-tecture and design established by Paul Leroy. Their core value is the integration and enrichment of space, form, light and function with the emphasis on materials of aesthetic quality.

The Leroy Collection features two quasi-sculp-tural designs: the Aoyama Table and the A3 stool. Aoyama, a district in Tokyo famous for its fashion

houses, restaurants and interesting shops is where Danish-French architect and designer, Paul Leroy found his inspiration for the Aoyama table. Conse-quently this piece is Danish-French by design with a hint of Japanese style. The inspiration for the stool frame is the letter ‘A’ whilst the seat dimen-sions match a sheet of A3 paper.

The Masculo Collection2008 D e s i g n e d b y G a m F r a t e s i

The design partnership, GamFratesi embodies the meeting between Italian and Danish design. Their considered and minimal approach to the Danish de-sign tradition is always combined with a sense of quirkiness and the desire to tell a story.

With GamFratesi the contrasts are often key to their inspiration. They work strictly within the Scandinavian approach to craft, simplicity and functionalism but there is always a strong emotional pull towards concept and the story behind each piece.

Gamfratesi [2006 - ]

When design connoisseurs try to predict who is go-ing to be the next Arne Jacobsen or Hans J. Weg-ner, GamFratesi comes high on the list and since the parnership was formed in 2006, GamFratesi has received a long list of design awards. In 20111 they recieved The Good Design Award for the Masculo Chair.

The Y! Table Collection2009 Designed by Henning Larsen Architects

With simple, classic lines and beautiful wooden tabletops, the versatile Y! table enhances any room. Y! Table was designed by Henning Larsen Archi-tects for Gubi in 2009. The Y! Table is notable both for the simplicity of its form and its construction; it is functional, thoughtful and contemporary.

Designed without architraves around the tabletop edge, the elegant steel table leg is angled towards the centre of the top, creating the illusion that the

tabletop is floating. The name is a reference to the point where the leg meets the table top – creating a y-shape.

The table collection is available as a dining and bar version in several sizes. With its many combina-tions it is suited to all types of homes.
