The confer- ence, held on November 11, 2006, took place at the San Diego State Universi- ty (SDSU) campus under the theme, “Los Estudiantes Son Por Esencia Seres Revolucionarios”. The presentation was part of a workshop organized by the Raza Press Association titled “Raza Journalism: Writing and Speaking The Truth”. Also presenting at the workshop was Compañero Antonio Velazquez, writer and member of the Raza Press Association. WE WANT TO CHALLENGE YOU TO START YOUR OWN NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, OR ANY TYPE OF MEDIA, ABOVE GROUND OR “UNDER- GROUND” W e would like to welcome you this afternoon to the Raza Press Associa- tion workshop, “Raza Journalism: Writing and Speaking The Truth”. Like the keynote speaker of the conference, Pablo Aceves said this morning, we want to recognize that by you being here today, on a Saturday, you are demonstrating not only an interest in furthering your education, but also in learning about the struggle for Raza/Mexicano self-determination. I want to begin this workshop with an introduction to the Raza Press Associa- tion, why and when the association was formed, our objectives, how we see the impact of the media upon La Raza, and what are some of the things that the association does to realize its objectives. After I finished, Compa Antonio Velazquez, also a member of the Raza Press Association, will discuss with you how the media works and the importance of being conscious of what it attempts to do to us and our community. After both of us have finish, we will allow some time for questions and answers, and for any comments you would like to make. UNITY AND THE RAZA PRESS ASSOCIATION The Raza Press Association was reestablished in 1989 as the Chicano Press Association. The original Chicano Press Association (CPA) was an organiza- tion consisting of most of the newspapers and magazines that existed dur- ing what we call the “Chicano Power Movement” of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The reestablishment of the CPA came about as a respond to a call from Unión del Barrio to progressive and revolutionary publications to attend a summit where we could discuss the question of the media and its impact on our communities. Some of the newspapers who participated in the meeting in- cluded La Gente, La Verdad, Nuestra Cosa, El Popo, and other newspapers. In 2004, at the association’s annual meeting, it was decided to change the name from the Chicano Press Association to the Raza Press Association. This RAZA JOURNALISM: WRITING AND SPEAKING THE TRUTH change of name was in response to the large Central American population (Salvadoreños, Guatemaltecos, and others) that had developed in California and we believed that the term “Raza” would be more inclusive of these com- munities; to us, all Latin American and Indigenous people are Raza. When we reestablished the Chicano Press Association, we had several rea- sons for its formation. One, we saw an almost absence of any progressive- independent Raza media covering and explaining the issues that were con- fronting our communities. We wanted to united the few publications that were out there, knowing that if we were to unite we could more effectively use our resources to create the media that our community needed. Second, we felt that organized under an association we would be able help existing publica- tions expand, as well as create new Raza journalists. And third, pulling our resources together we would “massify” progressive and revolutionary Raza media so that it could be seen at the schools, workplace, parks, barrios, pris- ons, etc. -wherever raza where at; in the same way movimiento literature was seen during the Chicano Power period of the late 1960s and early 70s. As a way of trying to meet these objectives, since its reestablishment in 1989, the RPA has organized conferences, workshops, and has published dozens of newsletters, pamphlets, and books. We have worked hard to expose the role that the mainstream media plays in our oppression and to inform our com- munities of the need to have our own media; a media that explains what are the real issues facing our community and what needs to be done to solve the problems we are facing. In fact, this workshop we are having today, is part of the work that the RPA does on a regular basis. THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS OWNED AND CONTROLLED BY ENEMIES OF LA RAZA As to the question of the impact of the media upon La Raza, we want to make it very clear to everyone that what we know as the “Mainstream Media”, which is the T.V., Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, Movies, Books, most of the Internet, and so forth, is owned and control by the enemies of La Raza. It is a media controlled by handful of corporations who not only want to make money from us, but they want to keep us oppressed and unable to rebel or challenge the power they have over us. It is a corporate elite [the owners and managers of the corporations], a rich and racist class of people, who rule this country [and most countries around the world] and they used the media to stay in power. Therefore, the role of the mainstream media is to confuse us, to make us stupid, and to make us do foolish things, instead of trying to end the oppres- sion and power that the corporate system has over the great majority of us. If you do some research, you will see that the very same people who control the oil and are behind the war in Iraq, are the same ones who own the media. You will see that the same people who own the large hotels that ex-

QUESTION: What were some of the accomplishments of the NCMC (since its reestablishment), what has been some of its weaknesses, and what is its future?

ANSWER: Since its reestablishment in 1989,National Chicano Moratorium Committee’s hasheld 5 national mobilizations for Raza Power.(1) It organizedmarchaagainst theRepublicanconventioninSanDiego;(2)in1996,itorganizedmassive marcha in Tucson to protest 150thanniversary the US war against Mexico andoccupation of half our nation; (3) in 1992, webroughtover4,000 toSanYsidro,CA tomarchagainst the Celebration of Cristobal Colon (4);and organized two large commemorations onthe25thand30thanniversariesofAugust29thwhichbroughtoutthousandsandshowedthattheMoratoriumisnotsomethingforthehistorybooks,but a day to remember in our gente’s beautifulhistoryofresistance. During the 1990s, the NCMC alsoorganizeddozensofconferences, meetingsandforumsinallpartsofOccupiedMexicotodiscussthe question of unity with other independent

forces(thosewhodidnotdependongovernment, corporation, or church funding). It allowed usto exchange our views and positively strugglearoundquestionsimportanttoourpeople.Mostof all, it allowed us to learn from each other, find a definition of unity and look for that unity wherever possible-aunitybasedonrespetoandcommongoals.Itwasoutofthis“proceso”thatUniondelBarriocameintocontactwithhundredsofhonestforceswhoweretrulyaboutRazaLiberation,andagainthepoliticsofMexicanPowercametotheforefront. On the other hand, the NCMC hadits weaknesses. One of them was that for anorganizationtobecometrulyeffectiveoveralongperiod, itmusthavealeadershipwithdisciplineandthe long-termgoalof liberation. Itmustbeable to give and take orders, there must beaccountability(whensomeonesaystheywilldosomething, theyhavetodoit),andtheleadershipmust have some kind of power. This did notexist. TheNCMCchaptershaddifferentlevelsof commitment, some more than others, andtheoverallprojectsufferedbecauseofit.Thisexperiencetaughtusthat,becausewithaloosebody,andnorealaccountability,theworkwasnotaseffectiveasitcouldhavebeen.Oftentimeswewouldgoonestepforwardandtwobackwards.It also taught us that for a national liberationmovement to be successful, it must be led bya disciplined, revolutionary organization, whichUniondelBarrioisdedicatedtobuilding. Today (2006), themajordriving forcebehindtheNCMCisitscoordinatorJaimeCruz, and theparticipationofgroups (amongothers)suchastheMovimientodeLiberaciónNacional(MLN)andLRUP.
