Estimating the demand for water in MumbaiCategory:Practice Case Studies774 Views | Rating: NA | First take a rough guess on the population of Mumbai. This number divided by 4 will give you the approximate number of households in Mumbai. Now divide the population/households into three different groups based on their economic strata. These strata will have different water usage. Thus you will have the percentage of households that fall under each category. Then list down the various usages of water drinking, washing, bathing etc. (personal usage) and cleaning cars/house, cooking (common household needs) Then divide each household on the basis of age the personal water requirements for each age group will vary. Thus you can now obtain the personal water requirements for each household. Please note that the personal water requirement will be the same approximately for people from each group. The common household water requirements can be then multiplied by the number of households to get the common water usage. Please note that the household water requirements will vary for different economic strata. Now you can calculate the total water requirement. Also take into account the water wastage and hence you can estimate the consumption also (or the amount of water that needs to be supplied).
