1.0 Welcome

Thank you for choosing to spend your trimester or year abroad with us at Edinburgh Napier

University. You’ve made the right choice!

Now you’ve chosen Edinburgh Napier University as your new study destination, the next

decision you need to make is which modules you will study during your time with us.

These Guidance Notes will tell you which modules are available for visiting students, they

will explain how you select them and will let you know what happens when your online

application form arrives with us in Edinburgh.

It is essential that you read these notes closely and carefully before submitting your

application.

Correct and valid module choices on the online application form will mean that your

application will be processed quickly, your place confirmed sooner and you’ll then have more

time to plan your stay in Scotland!

We look forward to receiving your application.

2.0 General considerations before choosing your modules

In order to ensure that your application is processed promptly, please take a minute to

read over our brief list of ‘things you need to know’:

Full-time students at Edinburgh Napier University study three modules per

trimester. Each module is worth 20 Scottish credits which is the equivalent to 10

ECTS and 5 US credit hours. This means a student studying here will take 30

ECTS and 15 US credit hour equivalent in one trimester which is in line with

other UK and European institutions. For each undergraduate module the

‘Expected Total Study Hours’ is 200 hours so, in one trimester students would be

expected to study 600 hours for 3 modules.

There are six academic Schools at Edinburgh Napier University, located at three

different campuses.

Business School Craiglockhart Campus School of Arts & Creative Industries Merchiston Campus School of Engineering & the Built Environment Merchiston Campus School of Computing Merchiston Campus School of Life, Sports & Social Sciences Sighthill Campus School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care Sighthill Campus Although you are invited to choose modules from across the six academic Schools, to speed up application processing time, reduce travel time between campuses and to ensure you integrate well into student life at Edinburgh Napier, you are

Page 4: GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on … a g e 1 | 28 GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on choosing your modules at Edinburgh Napier University Guide prepared

P a g e 4 | 28

recommended to select at least two of your modules from one academic School.

Erasmus+ exchange students should be aware that there are restrictions on their module selection and acceptance on modules out with the subject area of the Erasmus+ agreement is at the discretion of the School

It is your responsibility to ensure that your module selection is acceptable to

academic staff at your home institution; you should also ensure that you keep your

home institution aware of any changes or updates to your module selection.

3.0 A guide to the Module Catalogue at Edinburgh Napier – Things you need to

check

A full list of the University’s undergraduate and postgraduate modules can be found at:

www.modules.napier.ac.uk

When choosing each individual module, be sure to check the following:

Level of module

Trimester of delivery

Prerequisites

3.1 Level of module

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) is the national credit transfer

system for all levels of qualifications in Scotland. There are five levels for students to choose

from:

SCQF: 07 Undergraduate First Year modules

SCQF: 08 Undergraduate Second Year modules

SCQF: 09 Undergraduate Third Year modules

SCQF: 10 Undergraduate Fourth Year modules

SCQF: 11 Postgraduate Modules

In general visiting students will normally select modules at SCQF level 9 however, with

agreement from your home institution, it may be possible to take modules at other levels.

NB: Erasmus+ students are not allowed to study on postgraduate modules.

Visiting students are not allowed to take a mixture of postgraduate and undergraduate

modules. You can either study a mixture of modules level 07-10 OR modules at level 11

(postgraduate). Fee-paying students should be aware that there is an additional cost for

postgraduate modules.

3.2 Trimester of delivery

The academic year at Edinburgh Napier University is divided into trimesters.

There are three trimesters in the academic year however, only postgraduate students study

in the third trimester (May till August).

Page 5: GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on … a g e 1 | 28 GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on choosing your modules at Edinburgh Napier University Guide prepared

P a g e 5 | 28

Visiting students can study for the duration of the first trimester (autumn), second trimester

(spring) or for both. Dates of the academic calendar can be found at:

http://www.napier.ac.uk/about-us/term-dates

It is essential that you select modules that are offered in the trimester in which you

are coming. The main reason for the delay in processing visiting student applications is

because applicants often select modules that are not available during the trimester they are

here. Please check this carefully.

3.3 Prerequisites

Pre- Requisites are usually specific academic entrance requirements that have to be met

before you can study on a module.

Prerequisites normally exist for modules at Level 8 and/or above. If you are new to

Edinburgh Napier and have studied somewhere previously, then the easiest way to evaluate

if you meet the pre-requisite conditions is to read the module information for the pre-requisite

module. If you can identify that you have covered the content described, then you should be

study the module material at a higher level.

3.4 Other considerations

1. Edinburgh Napier University teaches degree programmes to students based in

campuses overseas. Please therefore remember to check that the module you wish

to select is taught face-to-face (not online) and at one of our Edinburgh Campuses.

2. Teaching timetables are only available approximately two months before the start of

each trimester and often module choices cannot be fully confirmed until

timetables have been published. It is always a possibility that modules could be

timetabled at the same time or be taught on different campuses so please ensure

that you have alternative module choices too.

4.0 How to search the ‘Module Catalogue’

The Module Catalogue at Edinburgh Napier University can be accessed via:

www.modules.napier.ac.uk

You can search the catalogue depending on your Subject Area /academic School in which it

is taught/ Trimester of Delivery or via an Advanced Search. In this example we are looking

for modules by ‘Subject Area’.

Select Search by Subject and then Digital Media and Interactive Design

This action will bring up a list of all the modules provided by this Subject Group. If we

assume you are interested in a third year module (SCQF 09) scroll down the page to look at

your module options.

Page 7: GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on … a g e 1 | 28 GUIDANCE NOTES A guide for visiting students on choosing your modules at Edinburgh Napier University Guide prepared

P a g e 7 | 28

On this screen it will tell you that the module only runs in Trimester 1.

This page will give you full details of the module including module content, learning

outcomes and reading list. It will also inform you of module prerequisites.

Select the module Digital Storytelling as shown.

NB: There may be changes made to available modules over the summer months and

therefore in some cases, it cannot be guaranteed that your chosen modules will be offered.

In this case, School staff will endeavour to work with you to find alternative modules.

You’re almost ready to choose your modules but before you do please read the

following pages which highlight by School those modules which you may wish

to consider and, in some cases, those you should not.

You will also find contact details of School staff who can help with any

academic-related queries that you may have during the application process and

your time at Edinburgh Napier.
