Most coaches would sit back and smile at the thought of returning four starters. CSI head coach Randy Rogers looks atthings a little differently.

“I never want to be just satisfied,” Rogers said. “And I never want our players to settle for being good when they can begreat.”

That drive led Rogers to recruit more height and more depth this season in hopes of returning to a place no Region 18team had ever been until two years ago when Rogers led the Golden Eagles into the NJCAA National Championship game in

Salina, Kan.“We have good sophomore leadership,” Rogers said.

“We’re balanced inside and outside now. Teams can’t justfocus on our outside game this season. I think we will havethe ability to score and put up a lot of points.”

The offense and defense starts at the top with the pointguard and the Golden Eagles return one of the best in thecountry. Region 18 Player of the Year and first-team All-American Maria Moore will trigger the offense. The 5-5guard averaged 19 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for CSIlast season and with the added experience will definitely bekey to the Golden Eagles success. Joining her at the guard

position will be returning 2-guard Brittany Moore. Moore wasdeadly from the 3-point line last season, leading the conferencein 3-point field goal percentage as well as 3-pointers per game. But that wasn’t enough offense for Rogers.

He added outside threats Maylene Ornelas (5-6 pointguard), Daraysha Kennedy (5-5 guard), Amy Higbee (5-8 guard,Kali Hess (5-8 guard) and Tera Tremayne (5-7 guard).Tremayne knocked down 246 high school career 3-pointers.

Rogers will look to returning starter Amy Bratvold at the 3-guard position. Already an outside threat, the 6-foot Bratvoldworked hard on her mid-range shot in the off-season and shouldbe tough to shut down. Last season her consistency gave theGolden Eagles 9 points and 6 rebounds per game. Look forthose numbers to increase even more this year.

Returning posts Alexis Tucker (5-11) and Ashley Thompson(5-10) spent much of last spring on versatility. If Rogers decidesto go with a big lineup, they will be able to play some at the 3-

guard spot. If he wants to go quick and small, they can play the power forward position. Thompson averaged 6 points and 7rebounds per game as a starter last season. Tucker added 3 rebounds and 3 points per game.

The one ingredient Rogers wanted more of than he had last season was height. The fifth-year coach got it.Posts Eva Ivanova (6-3), Anita Burdick (6-3) and Jennifer Kioa (6-4) will give the Golden Eagle guards plenty of options

inside.“I think we have depth at every position,” Rogers said. “We will be able to go big or small this year.”That depth will be crucial in league play this season. Salt Lake CC, which won the Region 18 title after placing third

during the regular season, returns seven players.“To win, you are going to have to beat them. I think the winner of the league has to go through Salt Lake,” Rogers said.

“North Idaho is always good and this year will be no different. Snow is better and CEU always brings a solid team into themix. I don’t know much about Colorado NW but they have a new coach and I’m sure they will be much improved.”

In his second season, Rogers brought home aregular-season championship, Region 18 Tournament champion-ship and a NJCAA consolation championship. The next year, hedid even better. Our number one goal for student-athletes at the College ofSouthern Idaho is for them to experience high quality educationwhile participating in and enjoying the challenge of Division Ijunior college basketball. The ultimate bonus, of course, is graduat-ing from a quality institution that has prepared them for a careerafter athletics.

The CSI Athletic Department is committed to providing studentsall the support and encouragement they need to find success both inacademics and athletics. The college provides unlimited resourcesthrough its student services to assist student-athletes in the class-room.

Students will enjoy the benefits of attending a private study tablefor basketball, as well as the use of the Academic DevelopmentCenter, and tutoring is provided as needed. Most importantly,student-athletes have the support and friendship of the coaches, theirteammates and their academic advisor. The best of everything ispossible at the College of Southern Idaho.

The ReasonWhen a child becomes seriously ill, the whole family suffers, particularly if the child must be hospitalized or receive outpatient treatment

far away from home for extended periods of time.To be with their child, parents often sleep on uncomfortable chairs or cots, or bear the expense and impersonal atmosphere of a hotel

room. At a time when they want all their strength available for their child, the simple demands of everyday life can seem overwhelming. For these families, Ronald McDonald House offers a refuge from the hospital, a home-away-from-home, where they can have a room of

their own, a comfortable bed, kitchen and laundry facilities, toys for the kids, and a cup of hot coffee.

Ronald McDonald HouseFor the child, it’s knowing that mom and dad are close by, in a good place. It’s having a comforting, peaceful place to go from the

hospital. For a brother or sister who cannot be there, it’s knowing that other family members are safe while away in a strange city. For the parents in the House, it’s knowing that they are not alone, that others have gone through similar situations and survived. It’s new

parents getting practical advice from “veterans.” It’s people drawing hope and strength from late-night conversations in corridors and kitch-ens, sharing experiences that can be difficult for family and friends back home to fully understand.

And, it’s a place to treasure every moment of having a child “home,” even if for just a short time. For board members and volunteers, who give of their time, money, and skills, it’s knowing that what they do really helps.

How The House OperatesEach Ronald McDonald House is unique, created by a team of local citizens to meet the needs of their community. The House is owned

and operated by the local not-for-profit organization created by these citizens.Local McDonald’s restaurants become involved in initial fundraising once several key elements are present: medical advisors from a

hospital with a need for such a House; a parent organization comprised of people whose children have been treated or are being treat at thesame hospital; and other interested and concerned volunteers.

To varying degrees, all groups participate in planning, construction, furnishing, building community awareness, securing goods andservices, and ongoing House operations. Other local and national companies also volunteer their support through material donations andmonetary contributions.

Families using the House donate $5 to $15 per day, if they can afford it. These revenues pay for part of the costs of continuing Houseoperations.

How It BeganThe first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia in 1974 as the result of the perseverance and dedication of Fred Hill, then a

Philadelphia Eagles football player.Today, through similar efforts by other groups of dedicated individuals, Ronald McDonald House provides temporary housing for more

than 350,000 people a year in facilities throughout the United States; Canada; Australia; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Geissen, West Germany.McDonald’s Corporation assists in increasing public awareness and in providing start-up funding for the new Houses. The local not-for-

profit organization operating the House can quality for $25,000 grant from Ronald McDonald’s Children’s Charities. Most importantly, it is the time and services of local volunteers and the local contributions of money and materials that make it possible

for the Ronald McDonald Houses to be open and operating.Assisting in these efforts, McDonald’s restaurant franchisees, holding individual promotions around the country, have raised more than

$25 million for the Ronald McDonald Houses and the families they serve. If you have questions about the national Ronald McDonald House program or wish to contact a local Ronald McDonald House regard-

ing services, activities, volunteer work or tax deductible donations, write or call: Ronald McDonald House, 101 Warm Spring Ave., Boise, ID83712.

McDonald’s, locally owned and operated byBill and Donna Kyle in Twin Falls, Burley andJerome sponsors the CSI Golden Eagles and theMcSlam-n-Jam. The money pledged for every dunkduring home Golden Eagle basketball games is splitbetween CSI Athletics and the Ronald McDonaldHouse.
