What is an apprenticeship?Apprenticeships are a great way to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst being employed and earning a wage. They are a great alternative to A-levels and university, with those building their careers through the apprenticeship route more likely to stay in work throughout their life. To start an apprenticeship you will need an employer who is willing to take you on as an apprentice.

As well as your nationally recognised qualification your apprenticeship programme includes:

Ò functional skills in English, maths and ICT Ò key transferable skills Ò a knowledge based qualification (NVQ)

Josie DowdingHeavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair ApprenticeWorks for Suttles

Not daunted by heavy plant machinery, huge trucks and working in an all-male environment, Josie enjoys helping to maintain and repair plant machinery at a 35-acre quarry in Swanage.

Dan SticklandBusiness Administration Advanced ApprenticeWorks for Southampton City Council

Working as a Business Administration advanced apprentice, Dan works on numerous projects for the City Council with lots of variety from managing their social media to meeting and working with major developers in the city. Dan is also one of the apprenticeship ambassadors for Southampton, visiting schools and colleges to spread the word on apprenticeships.

“I started an apprenticeship as I found college wasn’t for me as I really enjoy learning on the job, which is much more hands-on and practical. It is so much more than a qualification it has given me transferable skills, contacts in the industry and a whole new experience I wouldn’t have had in a classroom.”

“I love my apprenticeship. I’m continually gaining hands on experience, working towards an industry-recognised qualification plus I’m earning money whilst I’m learning. I don’t think you can beat that. I may be the only female but I’m treated fairly and the guys are really supportive.”

ShannEn BirksBuilding Services Engineering Advanced ApprenticeWorks for TNG Consulting Engineers

As a Building Services Engineering apprentice, Shannen enjoys the day to day running of projects, going out on site and assisting the Engineers. She is now studying a HND in Building Services Engineering and wants to progress through the ranks of her organisation.

“The apprenticeship was excellent and I learnt things I never knew about the world of engineering. I went to college one day a week, which I found was a good way to gain the education and knowledge needed. City College gave me full support. I learnt new skills and gained industry knowledge I never had.”

“I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to earn whilst I learnt and an apprenticeship gave me the best of both worlds. As a Building Services Engineering apprentice I especially enjoy the maths and analysis within the role and learning on the job is brilliant.”

How to find an apprenticeship

To start an apprenticeship you will need an employer who is willing to take you on as an apprentice.

If you have not been able to find an employer yourself, our dedicated business development team have a number of businesses looking for apprentices. Employers recognise the value of recruiting and training apprentices to make a positive impact on their business.

The apprenticeship job searchFinding an apprenticeship is similar to finding a job. We regularly post apprenticeship vacancies on our website – which you can apply for.

If you are unable to find a vacancy that matches your criteria, a proactive approach will often impress employers. If you know the type of company you want to work for, and the type of apprenticeship you want to complete, then approach companies directly with a copy of your CV. Alternatively our apprenticeship team will be willing to assist your search.

Already employed? If you already have a job and your employer is willing to offer you an apprenticeship we will contact them to discuss the options available.

There is a lot of competition for apprenticeship places so you need to stand out from the crowd.

You need to be enthusiastic, driven and motivated as employers want someone who can prove they have what it takes to be successful.

Myth busterMyth: Apprenticeships are for those that have poor grades.Busted: Wrong, they are just another type of learning for those that want to get into employment rather than develop their career through study alone.

Myth: Apprenticeships are poorly paid.Busted: The national minimum wage for apprentices is £3.50 per hour for those 16–18 and for 19+ who have completed their first year is £5.60 per hour.

Myth: An apprenticeship won’t help me get into University.Busted: Many students progress to university from a level 3 apprenticeship and apprenticeships are available right up to degree level.

Myth: Apprenticeships are not real jobs.Busted: An apprenticeship is a full time job and you have to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week, and you will be paid accordingly. This includes your time at work and at college.

Myth: I won’t get a qualification with an apprenticeship.Busted: All apprenticeships must include an element of training. They provide you with on and off the job training, which leads to an industry recognised qualification.

Myth: It won’t help my career prospects.Busted: On successful completion of your apprenticeship, your job prospects will be very good. 90% of apprentices stay in employment on completion and will earn around £100,000 more in a lifetime than other employees.
