Complete on-line application at applytexas.org and submit $30 application fee (the $30 application fee should be paid at the time of filling out the application - otherwise there may be a delay in your application being reviewed).

Submit resume (please see our website at http://tamut.edu/Admissions/Graduate%20Admissions/Graduate%20Programs.html for examples of resume formats and tools)

Submit letter of intent/interest (this document may be used to assess both your interest in the degree program as well as your writing skills)

Welcome to your educational future!

We are pleased to share with you information about our University, Graduate School and the Individual Graduate Programs we offer. Before we get to the informational part of this document, we wanted to take a minute to let you know that we understand the effort, cost, time and commitment it takes to be a graduate student.

Upon receiving your graduate degree, you will become a member of a very select group of people on this planet. Less than 1% of all people have a master’s degree or higher. This is no small feat.

We work hard to help our graduate students be successful not only in their courses, but also after they graduate and enter, re-enter or continue in the world of work. One of the greatest assets we have at our institution and in our graduate programs is an exceptionally high rate of full-time professors teaching the courses. They have a strong vested interest in your success.

The following pages have been developed to help you make the most informed and best choice regarding your educational future. Scheduling Courses and Advising Each student who is accepted into a graduate program is assigned a graduate advisor. This advisor is a full-time faculty member in the discipline that the student is studying. It is both important and critical that graduate students get involved in their own map of success through their graduate degree program. Some programs offer courses only once every other year. Failure to take the necessary courses in the right sequence can hinder the graduation process. Along with meeting with your advisor, you also have access to two other important resources for course scheduling and sequencing. The first is the historical record of courses that were taught recently in the program. This information can be found on our website at, http://www.tamut.edu/Student-Support/Registrar/Current%20Schedule.html. Although the fact that a course was typically taught in the spring semester DOES not mean it absolutely will be taught this coming spring semester, this website can give you a start at seeing what the general schedule looks like. The second and much more specific resource is the programs 2-year schedule. Make sure you consult with your advisor before scheduling courses.

Transferring Credits/Courses A student may transfer up to 12 approved graduate credits toward their master’s degree. Important to note here is that you must get these credits approved by your advisor prior to being accepted as part of your degree. If you arrive at the University having taking courses elsewhere, you should request for the program faculty to review your transcripts for transfer credits. In situations where you have already started your master’s degree program with us and wish to take a course or courses elsewhere and have the credits transfer in, make sure you get approval PRIOR to enrolling in said courses. Due to accreditation, professional and licensure/certification policies, in some cases, courses from other institutions may not count toward your degree here.

Application Materials and the Application Process Once you have made the decision to start your master’s degree with us there are only a few easy steps to applying to both the University and your degree program of choice. Please note that although you can submit all of your application materials at the same time – there are two levels of acceptance needed to get your degree with us. The first place you must be accepted is to the University itself. The program under which you intend to complete your master’s degree, of course, must provide the second acceptance. Here are the general materials and steps you need to

take to apply – but please make sure you refer to your specific program’s “Admission Requirements for Degree” which are identified on the following pages.

1. Complete and submit your application to the University at www.applytexas.org. A $30 fee needs to be submitted with this application to avoid delays in processing.

2. Submit via mail or email the following artifacts: a. Resume b. Letter of intent/interest

3. Official transcripts (sent by the University at which you attended – or mailed/delivered in an unopened sealed envelope by the issuing university) for all previous coursework - even those at which dual credit was awarded during high school

Resume This document is used to assess the background experiences, activities, and possible skills that an applicant is able to document through work and life history. Care should be taken to tailor your resume to the program of study for which you are applying. Most resumes that graduate applicants submit are between 1-2 pages in length.

Letter of Intent/Interest This brief paper should allow the reader to better understand your rationale, life story and purpose in seeking this degree. Because effective writing skills are necessary to be successful in graduate school, program faculty typically, review these papers from the perspective of your commitment and interest in the degree as well as your overall skill and aptitude for effective and professional writing. Most letters of intent/interest that graduate applicants submit are between 2-4 pages in length.

(3) Positive Recommendation Letters Graduate school requires a multitude of different positive and effective professional attributes. Faculty attends to the suggestions, feedback and offerings by other professionals regarding your performance in previous institutions, work settings and other professional venues. Former co-workers, instructors, supervisors, or any other professionals who can clearly attest to

the work, study and/or professional habits and styles of the applicant may complete recommendation letters.

Official Transcripts University policy forbids anyone from being fully accepted into a graduate degree program without first supplying the University with an official transcript from each and every college/university the applicant attended. It is important to note that ALL transcripts must come directly from the institution of record (mailed or hand delivered in an unopened envelope sealed by the issuing institution), and must be official.

Other Materials Because the graduate level of education requires in-depth training regarding the program of study, some degree programs require additional documentation or information before making a final admissions decision.

In-person interviews: The counseling program (both clinical mental health and school) require an in-person interview with the program faculty. This interview is typically 20 minutes in length and is used as a part of the overall assessment of fit within the field of professional counseling.

The Adult and Higher Education program requires that all applicants meet with the program coordinator (Dr. Gaynell Green) for an in-person interview prior to full acceptance into the program.

Standardized Tests (GRE, MAT, and GMAT): One of the predictors used nationally to determine aptitude and potential ability in meeting the academic rigors of graduate studies is the use of a standardized test. Some programs require official scores on these exams as a part of the overall assessment of applicants. The Testing Center offers the MAT on a regular basis throughout the school year.
